Takata recall - is taking much too long. My concern and Toyota warning expressed about the recall is it creates a danger to front seat passengers and does not allow me to use the vehicle front seat. This is very inconvenient as well as unsafe. Ii have contacted my dealership and keep getting notices but nothing happens. When will remedy be available?

Takata recall - I got a notice in the mail about this defect in my vehicle almost a year ago. It claims that whomever rides in the passenger side is at risk of potential death due to faulty airbag components. It goes on to warn that no one should ride in the passenger seat until a remedy has been established to fix the problem. This is our main vehicle and mode of transportation. My wife has to…

Takata recall - Toyota will not replace my Toyota 4r airbags. Toyota says they have no parts & don't know when they will have parts. I can't keep driving around with defective air bags

Takata recall. It has been 10 months since the recall was announced on january 9, 2017, yet there is still no solution/remedy for it by Toyota. The recall status is still listed as "recall incomplete. Remedy not yet available". In the meantime, thousands of us 4runner drivers are at risk to injury or death due to this defect. That is unacceptable.

Common questions

How serious is the airbags problem on the 2012 Toyota 4Runner?

It's a meaningful issue. 70 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,100.

At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?

Across the 10 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 42,000 and 80,000 miles, with the median around 61,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 42,000; a quarter make it past 80,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to airbags?

No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
