2013 Toyota RAV4 owner complaints

Pulled into driveway, turned off car. Entered house within a couple of minutes front end of car burst into flames. Fire Dept. was called to put out fire. Car was towed to Newburgh NY for insurance adjustor inspection. I was on my way to store and stopped at in-laws. Had I not made this stop, I would have been on thruway. If car had been a few feet closer to garage, it would have set the garage, with car inside, on fire, and house. Car in garage could have exploded (gas tank). The recall was received days prior to incident, and indicated remedy would be ready in June 2024. Police and Fire Dept were called, insurance reps, I believe have inspected the car. It was towed and I did not meet with insurance rep. There were no warning lights or problems, passed inspection in August 2023. P

While backing out of my garage, saturday 12/12/15, my foot was on the brake, suddenly the engine speeded up radically and I sped backward to the end of my drive. I braked and shifted to neutral and switched off the engine. It stopped and upon restarting, was ok. This could be deadly if it happened in traffic.

I purchased the 2013 rav4 in april, 2013. Within a few months, I began to smell an odor coming from the ac when I start the car. The dealership states that the box that holds the ac condensation is too small due to manufacturing changes. On my second trip to the dealership with this complaint, they sprayed ac freshener in the part underneath the car. This helped with the odor but only temporarily. I am concerned that what I am breathing is mold and that this will only get worse as long as I keep the car. I believe this could harm my health over time. The dealership rep stated that this is a problem on these cars from time to time. I like my car (my 5th Toyota) but I would not recommend it to anyone due to this issue. *tr

MY brakes failed me and then bumped the car in front of me the warning system didn't alert me about hitting the car in front of me. and now that person is sueing me for alot of money. now the date is approximate day the dealerhip told me the brakes were fine how is that when they didn't stop the car and keep me from hitting the car in front of me they needed to be replaced.

Since we purchased the car new in 2013 the trunk doesn’t always open when the button is pushed. I never saw a recall so I figured “my luck” until today. I saw another person unable to open the trunk. Is there a fix?

Vehicle was parked in parking lot, ignition turned off. Left car for approximately 1-2 minutes, returned to parking lot to find vehicle had caught fire. Fire appeared to originate in front of vehicle. Fire department was called and fire extinguished. Most of damage done to front of vehicle and passenger compartment. Vehicle destroyed.

My husband and I were carpooling to work. While driving on the highway with minimal traffic in a clear straight away (no overpasses) we heard what sounded like a gun shot and I panicked. My husband thought I may loose control of the vehicle out of fear. He was able to coach me to pull off the highway so we could inspect the vehicle. The sunroof had looked like it exploded from the inside out. We called the dealership which stated they do not cover any glass damage and referred me to safelite which then referred me to sunroof express for repair. This was extremely upsetting as nothing struck the vehicle and we feel that we were not at fault. We did nothing to cause the breakage.

The instruments (speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge) of the car do not light up if the headlights are off. This can be dangerous when driving under underpasses or in the shadow of trees, etc., since one unexpectedly cannot see the speedometer or tachometer under those conditions. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 Toyota rav4. While driving approximately 2 MPH and slowing down to park, the vehicle accelerated. The maintenance required and horseshoe warning indicators illuminated. The contact quickly cut off the engine to stop the vehicle. While driving approximately 60 MPH on the highway, the failure recurred. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure recurred twice. The contact also stated that the key intermittently did not unlock the doors. The failures were not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.

The battery caught on fire while driving causing a loss of power. I could pull over and a driver passing by jumped out and extinguished the fire.

Brakes failed to stop while parking vehicle with a speed of less than 5 mph hitting landscaping with a young pine tree that made the vehicle stopped. Hit and went over some matured bushes on the landscaped parking lot. The SUV cannot be stopped even brakes were depressed all the way. I needed to have my vehicle towed out of the bushes and the broken young tree in order to get out of the rubble. I need to have my brakes inspected by the dealership this week as it happened this Christmas Eve and the service are closed.

This vehicle has a faulty brake, it makes a sound every time you apply brake. Moreover the brakes feels very soft, need to push very hard on brakes to stop the car. Bought the car new and on original Toyota brakes that came with the new car. It is a safety problem.

Makes lot of noise front brakes when driving and applying brakes. *tr

"blizzard pearl bisque" paint peeling between the windshield and the sunroof. Paint is coming off in large pieces the size of silver dollars. Paint "blisters" first then just falls off the roof of the car. This problem has been there for the better part of the year and seems to have nothing to do with the car being stationary, in motion - or the environment. It has been parked in the same places that my prior toyotas have been parked, and this problem has never occurred before. My wife and I have seen this problem, with this color paint on other rav4s, prius, and Lexus models.

Tl* the contact owns a 2013 Toyota rav 4. The contact was driving 55 MPH and noticed that the speed reading was inaccurate when compared to the speed displayed on the GPS system. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but no repairs were performed. The contact stated that the mechanic confirmed that the speedometer was indicating a higher speed then the vehicle was actually traveling but the speed was within an acceptable range. The manufacturer was notified and no solution was offered. The failure mileage was 127.

Approaching stop sign with foot on brake, sudden acceleration , towards oncoming intersection , with cross traffic, vehicle still lunged and vibrated further, able to stop vehicle by turning the ignition off! *tr

The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The driver was able to drive to her destination. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing the torque converter to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 132,000.

11443340 FILE number please add this commentary. Toyota provided and extended warranty for this vehicle due to torque converter defects. I was not notified because I was not owner at time. Extended warranty expired on 10/13/21 . My car developed problem around 11/22/21. Toyota now refuses to help in any form.
