Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering visibility on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin 24-BD-001H Feb 2024

This bulletin contains information about the proper removal of the windshield wiper blade protective cover on all models. If the protective cover is not removed correctly, there is a possibility of the rubber insert and rail spring becoming partially separated on the inner side of the wiper blade, which could lead to poor wiping performance and/or possible scratching of the windshield glass. Follow the procedure in this bulletin to properly remove the windshield wiper blade protective cover on all new wiper blades.

Certain Hyundai vehicles may not be equipped with an immobilizer. This bulletin provides the service procedure to update the IBU/BCM (Integrated Body Control Unit/Body Control Module), to revise the OEM Hyundai burglar alarm system operation and ignition start logic, and installation of two anti-theft decals for the front windows.

Service Bulletin 23-BD-002H Jan 2023

This bulletin provides information regarding condensation related to the accumulated moisture in the headlamp, rear combination lamp, daytime running lamp (DRL), or fog lamp. This TSB illustrates the various causes of condensation inside the lamp assembly. Lamp assembly replacement is NOT necessary in most cases. This condition can be eliminated by turning on the lamps with the engine running for several minutes or during normal driving operation.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners report two distinct visibility failures on 2015 Sonatas. The first is windshield fogging that blocks visibility completely within 30 seconds in cold weather (32°F), occurring multiple times during the same trips. In one case, the driver couldn't locate the defrost control fast enough during a highway merge, forcing an emergency pull-over. Hyundai service stated they couldn't duplicate the condition or fix it.

The second and more prevalent failure involves panoramic sunroofs detaching or partially detaching while driving at speeds ranging from 30 to 70 mph, with no warning lights. Owners report the wind deflector bonding failing, the sunroof glass shattering on impact with the road, and the seal cracking. In several cases, sunroofs detached completely and fell onto the highway, creating hazards for following vehicles. One owner experienced a re-failure of the same component after a recall repair in 2017. A wiper blade also detached during rain, leaving a bare metal blade scraping the windshield. Owners report dealers citing wear-and-tear and quoting $1,200 for repair, though the failures appear linked to design defects rather than maintenance issues.

Failure modes owners describe

Windshield fogging with complete visibility loss

Windshield fogs over completely within 30 seconds in cold weather (32°F), blocking all visibility regardless of vehicle speed or weather clarity.

When: Cold weather conditions (32°F), multiple occurrences within same trip on different dates

Symptoms owners cite: Complete windshield fogging in less than 30 seconds; Total loss of visibility; Occurs in clear-weather conditions at 32°F outside temperature

Repairs/costs cited: Hyundai service unable to duplicate condition or provide repair

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Hyundai service declined to fix; factory customer service declined to acknowledge problem

Panoramic sunroof detachment

Panoramic sunroof assembly detaches partially or completely from the vehicle frame while driving, with no warning indicators. Wind deflector bonding fails, causing sunroof to separate and in some cases fall onto the roadway.

When: 30 to 70 mph driving speeds; mileage range 33,000 to 92,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Sunroof detaches while vehicle in motion; No warning lights illuminated; Sunroof cover fails to close or closes only partially; Wind keeps lifting detached sunroof cover; Sunroof glass shatters upon detachment; Loud popping noise from sunroof area

Codes mentioned: NHTSA Campaign 16V726000 (Visibility)

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers diagnosed wind deflector bonding failure and quoted full sunroof assembly replacement; one owner charged $1,200; repairs performed at collision center and dealers; one owner reported re-failure after recall repair in 2017

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA Campaign 16V726000 (Visibility) recall issued; owners report VINs not included in recall despite matching failure profile; recall remedy parts unavailable for extended periods; one owner reported Hyundai refused to honor recall remedy after 10-year warranty expired

Panoramic sunroof misalignment and seal failure

Sunroof frame shows visible misalignment; rubber molding on driver side fails to stay attached and gets sucked into vehicle when sunroof closes, creating gaps between alignment parts. Causes rattling noise during operation.

When: Occurs during sunroof operation cycles

Symptoms owners cite: Visible misalignment of sunroof frame; Rubber molding detaches from driver side; Molding gets sucked into vehicle when closing; Gaps appear between alignment parts; Rattling noise from sunroof when vehicle in motion

Repairs/costs cited: Hyundai service departments unable to resolve; local auto glass companies unable to provide explanation

Wiper blade detachment

Driver-side wiper blade becomes loose and detaches during operation while wipers are in motion, particularly during rain. Bare metal wiper arm then scrapes windshield.

When: During rainy evening commute; minimal usage since installation

Symptoms owners cite: Wiper blade suddenly becomes loose; Blade detaches and is flung from vehicle; Bare metal wiper arm scrapes windshield after blade detachment; Leaves visible line on windshield where condensation failed to form

Repairs/costs cited: Replacement wiper blades (both sides) installed by licensed mechanic; driver-side blade failed while passenger-side continued functioning despite identical installation and wear

Sunroof inoperability

Sunroof becomes inoperable without warning or indication of malfunction. No warning lights illuminate to alert driver to the failure.

When: At 83,000 miles; discovered upon attempting to start vehicle

Symptoms owners cite: Sunroof inoperable; No warning lights illuminated; Failure detected at vehicle startup

Codes mentioned: NHTSA Campaign 16V726000 (Visibility)

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Vehicle taken to dealer for diagnosis and repair; no repair completed

Common questions

How serious is the visibility problem on the 2015 Hyundai Sonata?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 18 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $350 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the visibility typically fail?

Across the 11 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most visibility failures cluster between 40,000 and 83,000 miles, with the median around 70,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 40,000; a quarter make it past 83,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $350 for visibility repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to visibility?

Yes — 1 active recall(s) cover visibility issues on this vehicle. Recall fixes are always free regardless of mileage or warranty status. Use the VIN decoder at the top of the page to check if your specific vehicle is affected.
