What stands out

No new NHTSA powertrain complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 9 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.

The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: The 2015 Mazda CX-5 shows a pattern of significant powertrain issues reported across 19 complaints, particularly transmission failures occurring between 25,000 and 91,000 miles that cause complete loss of drive with no warning. AWD models also report rear differential failures around 63,000-79,000 miles, and owners report Mazda acknowledged transmission defects in service advisories but declined to recall or warranty repairs.

Owners report transmission failures in 2015 CX-5s that strike suddenly and without warning—the vehicle simply won't shift into drive or won't move above 5-10 mph, often while accelerating into traffic or at intersections. Failures cluster around 59,000 to 91,000 miles, though one occurred at 25,000 miles. Multiple owners were nearly rear-ended because their vehicles became immobile in moving traffic. A few owners report the dealer confirmed an "internal transmission failure" and mentioned Mazda discovered and corrected the defect in replacement units—yet no recall was issued. Repair cost for full transmission replacement runs around $5,400.

Owners also report unintended acceleration while braking, with the engine revving to redline even as the brake pedal is pressed firm, sometimes fixed temporarily by a PCM/TCM update that Mazda issued via TSB, only to recur later. Transmission slipping and harsh shifts at low speeds were reported, as was a power loss event during highway driving (attributed to fuel contamination by the dealer).

AWD-equipped models show rear differential failures around 63,000-79,000 miles, marked by metallic clunking from the rear axle. Mechanics identified viscous coupling failure requiring full rear differential replacement—roughly $2,000 out of pocket.

Failure modes owners describe

Transmission failure with loss of drive

Transmission loses the ability to shift into drive or second gear, or suddenly stops responding to throttle input. Occurs without warning and often while in traffic or attempting to accelerate. Dealers diagnose as internal transmission failure requiring full replacement.

When: Reported between 25,000 and 91,000 miles; several cases around 59,000-63,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle won't shift into drive or second gear; Sudden loss of power/acceleration; Engine revs but car won't move or moves only 5-10 mph max; Jerking or lurching forward when attempting to drive; No warning lights or prior symptoms in most cases

Repairs/costs cited: Full transmission replacement needed; costs cited as $5,400; dealers note replacement units have corrected defect

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealers acknowledge Mazda discovered defect and corrected it in new transmission models; no recall issued; owners report Mazda took no responsibility

Unintended acceleration during braking or parking

Engine revs to high RPM and vehicle lunges forward when driver is applying brake pedal or shifting to park. Occurs in stop-and-go traffic or while parking. Drivers report firm brake application does not prevent forward motion.

When: Reported at 25,000 miles and other unspecified mileages

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle lurches forward while brakes are applied; Engine RPMs climb high (redline reported at 6,500 rpm) despite brake pedal being pressed; Vroom sound noted during events; Occurs when shifting to park or attempting to stop in traffic; Can happen repeatedly over time

Repairs/costs cited: One case reports PCM and TCM program update plus KAM reset per manufacturer TSB corrected issue temporarily; reoccurred later

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer TSB addressing PCM/TCM programming issued; issue recurred in at least one case despite TSB service

Transmission hesitation, slipping, and harsh shifts

Transmission exhibits delayed engagement, rough or violent gear shifts, and apparent slipping between gears. Shift from reverse to drive or low-speed acceleration cause jerking. Gear changes on downhill grades are violent.

When: Reported at various mileages including low mileage instances

Symptoms owners cite: 2-second delay after shifting before car moves; Violent or hard jerking during gear changes; Harsh downshifting on downhill grades; Transmission slips or skips gears at low speeds; Stuttering and sudden stops during low-speed driving

Repairs/costs cited: No specific repair costs cited for these incidents; unclear if transmission replacement required

Rear differential failure (AWD models)

AWD powertrain loses power to rear wheels with loud metallic clunking from rear axle. Failure identified at viscous coupling connecting driveshaft to rear differential. Occurs in tight turns, backing, or under power.

When: Reported at 63,000 miles and 79,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Power disengages from rear wheels; Heavy intermittent metallic clunking from rear axle; Noise worse in slow tight turns or when backing up; Chattering noise from rear while driving

Repairs/costs cited: Requires replacement of viscous coupling and entire rear differential assembly; cost approximately $2,000 parts and labor

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No recalls issued for this failure

Power loss during highway driving

Vehicle loses engine power and responsiveness during highway acceleration or cruising. Engine will not respond to throttle input and vehicle limited to 45-50 mph. Occurs suddenly with check engine and warning lights illuminating.

When: Reported early in ownership (first few months)

Symptoms owners cite: Complete loss of power response to accelerator; Check engine light and multiple dash warning lights illuminate; Vehicle limited to 45-50 mph maximum speed; Power loss during freeway acceleration

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer attributed to contaminated fuel and directed owner to burn through tank; no repair documented; issue did not recur

Shifter assembly defect

Shifter assembly fails to function properly; vehicle remains powered on after engine shutdown and parking.

When: Not specified

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle does not fully shut off when parked; Radio and systems remain on after engine turned off

While driving through stop and go traffic near a traffic light on a downward slope (maybe 10-15 degrees), I attempted to apply the brakes in order to come to a stop. When doing so, the brake pedal was being applied normally but the vehicle wasn't slowing down like it normally does. As a result, I pushed down on the brakes as hard as possible and while the vehicle slowed down more than it…

There was chattering noise from the rear while driving the vehicel dealership diagnosed it as a rear differential issue. Napleton Mazda dealership in arlington heights il.told me rear differential was broken with out any further details. I told me this issue cannot be fixed needs a new rear differential. So they changed the whole differential. Only the work performed receipt was given.

Common questions

How serious is the powertrain problem on the 2015 Mazda CX-5?

It's a meaningful issue. 19 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $2,500.

At what mileage does the powertrain typically fail?

Across the 14 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most powertrain failures cluster between 25,000 and 79,000 miles, with the median around 63,537. A quarter of owners report trouble before 25,000; a quarter make it past 79,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $2,500 for powertrain repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to powertrain?

No active recalls currently cover powertrain issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
