What stands out

Among the 7 model years of RAM 3500 in our records for suspension problems, this one ranks #3 by owner-complaint volume.

No new NHTSA suspension complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 9 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering suspension on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners describe violent front-end shaking at highway speeds (50+ mph), with one experiencing loose inner tie-rod threads and abnormal noise at 78 mph around 70,221 miles. The shaking is triggered by even minor bumps and has nearly caused loss of control. This mirrors a recall (R46) applied to 2013–2014 models, yet a 2015 model exhibits identical symptoms. One owner reports a temporary weld applied during recall work but no permanent repair completed, leaving the steering permanently misaligned.

The air ride suspension system fails to function, with "SERVICE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM" warnings appearing on startup. Dealers cannot reproduce the fault and decline repair despite multiple visits.

Front tires wear excessively, requiring replacement at 10,000–15,000 miles. One owner needed three alignments in 12,000 miles. Attempts to fix this through tire replacement, rim replacement, rebalancing, steering stabilizer shock replacement, and pressure adjustments have yielded no improvement.

A separate high-frequency vibration at 70+ mph originates in the rear and under the seats. Despite identical interventions—tire replacement, rebalancing, rim replacement, and shock replacement—the vibration persists.

Failure modes owners describe

Death Wobble / Front-End Steering Shake

Violent shaking and wobbling in the front end at highway speeds (50+ mph) triggered by even slight bumps. One owner noted loose inner tie-rod thread and abnormal noise from the front. Owners report near-loss of control at freeway speeds. At least one 2015 model exhibits the same issue despite recall repairs (R46) applied to 2013–2014 models.

When: Highway speeds; some incidents reported at 50+ mph, 65–75 mph range, 70+ mph. One owner noted abnormal noise at 78 mph with ~70,221 miles.

Symptoms owners cite: Violent shaking and wobbling at highway speeds; Shaking triggered by bumps in the road; Abnormal noise from front of vehicle; Nearly lost control of steering at freeway speeds; Loose inner tie-rod thread observed; Front-end shaking above 40 mph

Repairs/costs cited: One owner reported temporary weld applied during recall repair, but permanent repair never completed, leaving steering unable to be properly aligned. Other owners have attempted replacement of steering stabilizer shock and tire rebalancing with no improvement.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall R46 applied to 2013–2014 models; same issue reported on 2015 model. Dealers unable to determine cause in some cases and did not repair. Manufacturer notified in at least one case.

Air Suspension System Malfunction

Air ride suspension system fails to function. 'SERVICE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM' warning message illuminates on startup. One owner with 30K advertised towing capacity reports the air ride system does not work and attributes some of the handling issues to this failure.

When: Present from delivery (July 2015) in one case; at ~60,000 miles in another case where service message appears on startup.

Symptoms owners cite: SERVICE AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM warning message on startup; Air ride system does not function; Poor suspension performance under load

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer unable to duplicate failure in one case despite four visits; vehicle not repaired. Multiple dealer visits with no resolution.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer notified; case opened but not resolved. Dealers unable or unwilling to repair.

Excessive Tire Wear and Alignment Issues

Front tires wear excessively fast, requiring replacement at 10,000–15,000 miles. One owner required three wheel alignments within 12,000 miles. Tire wear is likely caused by the underlying wobble and steering issues, but also reflects a systemic alignment problem.

When: Early in vehicle ownership; one owner needed alignment three times by 12,000 miles. Another owner needed tire replacement at 15,000 miles and again shortly after.

Symptoms owners cite: Front tires wear excessively (replaced at 10,000–15,000 miles); Repeated loss of wheel alignment; Uneven tire wear; Tires require rebalancing multiple times with no improvement

Repairs/costs cited: Owners have had tires replaced, rims replaced, tires rebalanced, and steering stabilizer shock replaced, all with minimal or no improvement. Tire pressures adjusted with no relief.

High-Frequency Vibration in Rear Suspension

Vehicle vibrates heavily at highway speeds (70+ mph), primarily in the rear end or under the seats. Vibration occurs in the 65–75 mph range in one case. Owner has replaced tires, rims, rebalanced tires, and replaced steering stabilizer shock with no improvement.

When: At 70 mph or above; 65–75 mph range reported in another case.

Symptoms owners cite: Heavy vibration at highway speeds; Vibration centered in rear end or under the seats; Vibration persists across multiple speeds (65–75 mph)

Repairs/costs cited: Tires replaced and rebalanced four times; rims replaced; steering stabilizer shock replaced; tire pressures adjusted. No improvement despite these repairs.

Common questions

How serious is the suspension problem on the 2015 RAM 3500?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 10 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $900 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the suspension typically fail?

Across the 8 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most suspension failures cluster between 5,000 and 60,000 miles, with the median around 31,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 5,000; a quarter make it past 60,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $900 for suspension repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to suspension?

No active recalls currently cover suspension issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
