My 2017 Hyundai Sonata Sport Limited 2.4 has a known engine defect causing excessive oil consumption. The vehicle was at an authorized Hyundai dealership for the oil consumption test and had been approved for a new engine replacement. Prior to the repair, I completed $2,300 in maintenance, specifically an oil combustion cleaning and spark plug replacement, which the dealership said was required to perform the oil consumption test. While the vehicle was in the dealership’s custody, it caught fire on 12/19/2025 at World Hyundai Matteson. No one was injured, but the car was destroyed. This occurred while the vehicle was under warranty repair, creating a serious safety risk. I am submitting this complaint to document the fire and the associated safety issue with this engine defect.

In winter of 2018, my husband and I purchased a certified pre-owned 2017 Hyundai Sonata, and from the moment we drove it off the lot, it had an oil consumption problem. Then, in 2023, the spark plugs began failing. Each time this happens, the whole car shakes and stops running. We found out that Hyundai and Kia engines from 2009-2022 have major problems and that there are many class-action lawsuits against the manufacturer. We contacted both the dealer and Hyundai corporate to find out how we could fix the engine. We have small children and just wanted to repair our family car. The dealer refuses to fix it. They told us that it's Hyundai's problem. Hyundai acknowledged that we are eligible for a new engine but that until a certain rod fails and the whole engine implodes, they can't do anyt
The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the RPMs revved up however, the vehicle failed to respond. The contact stated that the vehicle decelerated, lost motive power and stalled in the middle of the road. The contact's newborn and two other young children were occupying the rear seats at the time the failure occurred. The vehicle failed to restart. Another driver assisted the contact with hauling the vehicle to her residence. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The contact was also informed that other unknown repairs also needed to be completed. The dealer informed the contact that the engine could not be replaced under an unknown r
While I was driving I had come to a stop at the stop light. When it turned green I began to make a left turn. Halfway through the turn at a few miles an hour my engine light and traction control lights came on. At the same time the engine began to rev to about 4500 RPM. It died down quickly. I then had no response from the accelerator. Luckily I was able to pull over to the side of the road as I had just entered a town. I turned off the car and attempted to restart it. It would not restart until about 15 minutes later. The shifter became locked in the parking position and even after using the shift release button I was still unable to move the vehicle. Luckily again I had just entered a town but a few miles before that I was on country roads where there was no cell phone signal at all. I w

Problem 1: I made a right turn at a red light. As I turned my power steering light turned on and my steering wheel locked up and I lost control of the vehicle. After stopping and turning off the vehicle, I restarted it. At this point I was able to regain control of the car. A few days later the same thing happened again as I made a right turn from a parking lot into the flow of traffic. One again I stopped the engine and restarted the car, then I regained control of the car. Problem 2 (May be related): My passenger side headlight was replaced a year ago. Recently the light went out again. I took the car in to a mechanic to repair it. It was repaired so I thought. Two days later the light went out again. The mechanic believes their may be an electrical issue. Problem 3 (May

The car's paint is peeling all over. The roof was repainted in 2018, the hood and side door in 2024 and now the the roof supports on each side and trunk are peeling . While driving a big piece of white paint flew to my windshield blocking the driver's view. It stuck under the wipers when used to remove it. Hyundai is aware and has recalled the paint but delays fix and then fixes in tiny areas so that you have to continue coming back for repainting. Now they do not want to pay for repairs stating the recall expired. It expired because of their delay and not painting the entire car. Hyundai should paint the entire car when there is a paint defect.
Ever since I have had my car there has been a wind sound like some this is dragging under my car! Been to dealership multiple times and they tell me that’s how these cars sound! Now oil is disappearing right after and oil change! They say my oil pan bolts were stripped out! Well the Hyundai dealership is the only people that have done my oil changes! Tried to charge me for that! I get an engine diagnosis check done and they tell me nothing is wrong with my car! Before I could make it home engine light was on! Took it back now they saying engine manifold! Want to charge me for that! Now car won’t go over 20 mph! White car paint has chipped from the front roof and hood of car! Driving I see multiple white vehicles with paint chipped in the same areas of the vehicle! Call corporate they know

The car lost all acceleration and my check hybrid system light came on. The car would not handle safely to drive. After 3 resets the car finally accelerated as normal. The codes clear themselves before the dealer can check them to give a specific issue. It is not giving the diagnosis for the hybrid issue in the diagnostic log.
The makes a weird shutter noise when accelerating and won't crank over 60. Loses power when turning or when going uphill. Sometimes has problem starting. Enging light came on twice blinking, once I changed the battery it went off and was working fine. Now it's back on again after a few weeks. Plus my oil tank still comes on and I've just received and oil change. I just bought the car in August of this year, dealership sold to me with a faulty battery.

Driving home car just shut off still had power to steer and brake but no engine. Pulled it off the main road and it leaked oil but still no engine. Already had the dealer replace the intake manifold at my expense despite hyundai knowing the plastic lever inside fails. We were lucky the snowplow was going the opposite direction as the weather was horrible as we got closer to home. I have a dead car in my yard waiting to have a dealer look at it. We could have been killed due to fault of engine.

On the 2017 Hyundai sonata limited (not the base or sport models), the enclosure surrounding the light unit has a piece at the top that casts a shadow on the street that is distracting to the driver and impairs visibility. The shadow appears to look like a tab and casts a shadow on the left hand lane line that makes visibility hard and is a safety concern. We have been informed by the dealership that we took it to that ordered a replacement headlight unit that it appears to be an issue with the design that only appears to impact to the limited models of the sonata. Upon further research, there are a number of other complaints that are referenced in the website https://www.cargurus.com/cars/discussion-t68982_ds813530 regarding issues with both the 2017 and 2018 models.
