What stands out

Owners have filed 27 powertrain complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Among the 7 model years of Chevrolet Silverado HD in our records for powertrain problems, this one ranks #2 by owner-complaint volume.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners report a range of transmission and powertrain failures on 2020 Silverado HD trucks, many related to recall N242454440 and NHTSA Campaign 24V797000. The most frequent issue involves harsh upshifts, transmission slipping, failure to shift, and rear wheel lock-up at highway speeds without warning lights. Several owners describe the transmission stalling without warning, forcing restart, or being stuck in third gear despite accelerator input.

One owner documented metallic flakes and burnt fluid at 80,000 miles; another experienced transmission overheating to 240°F while flat-towing. Transmission oil cooler lines fail at crimped joints, spraying fluid near hot exhaust and causing immediate loss of power—a fire and stranding hazard.

The valve body is cited as a design flaw; one owner notes that after valve body failure, the transmission lacks proper lubrication, leading to catastrophic damage GM will not fully cover. An unrelated but critical failure involves rear differential destruction when the vehicle shifts into four-wheel-drive automatically at low mileage (8,400 miles). Output shafts shear at mileages between 20,000 and 80,000 miles.

A vehicle shifted from Park to Drive on its own while idling and crashed into a house. Separate complaints cite DEF tank heater shorts melting wiring harnesses, diesel fuel injector connector shorts causing misfires, and NOx sensor "slow response" issues. Across all narratives, owners struggle to get recall repairs completed because parts remain on backorder for months, leaving them driving vehicles with known defects or unrepaired transmissions entirely.

Failure modes owners describe

Transmission valve body defect and cascading transmission failure

Valve body design flaw in 10-speed transmission causes harsh upshifts, transmission slipping, failure to shift, and flare shifts. When valve body fails, transmission cannot receive proper lubrication, causing catastrophic internal damage. Owners report GM covers only the valve body under recall, not secondary damage from the faulty design.

When: Variable; 67,000–188,000 miles reported; some failures early

Symptoms owners cite: Harsh, jerking upshifts; Transmission slipping and hesitation on acceleration; Vehicle stuck in third gear despite throttle input; Transmission overheating while towing (temps to 240°F); Burnt-smelling, dark brown fluid with metallic flakes; Flare shifting and shuddering

Codes mentioned: P1089, P22F9

Repairs/costs cited: Valve body replacement ($6,800 cited in one complaint); full transmission replacement required after secondary damage. One owner paid for aftermarket transmission rebuild from retirement savings. Parts unavailable for extended periods.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall N242454440 (valve body replacement); NHTSA Campaign 24V797000. Parts on backorder for months. GM warranty covers valve body only; secondary transmission damage not covered. Software update offered but does not resolve shifting issues. One owner reports GM engineer confirmed duplicated fault codes in memory.

Transmission oil cooler line failure at crimp joint

Metal-to-rubber hose crimp joint fails, spraying transmission fluid near hot exhaust and causing immediate loss of motive power. Creates fire hazard and forces vehicles to shoulder at highway speeds.

When: 67,000 miles reported in two separate complaints

Symptoms owners cite: Transmission fluid pooling under vehicle; Smoke from rear of vehicle; Loss of motive power while driving; Fluid sprayed near hot exhaust (fire risk)

Repairs/costs cited: Transmission oil cooler line replacement. One vehicle required full transmission replacement after fluid loss caused internal damage. Repairs completed at dealerships.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Extended Coverage Program (CSP N212326940) issued but VIN not included in one case. Repairs completed; manufacturer notified.

Rear wheel lock-up during acceleration and towing

Rear wheels lock up momentarily while driving or towing at speeds from 30 to 55 MPH, creating crash and jackknife risk. No warning lights precede failure. Software updates applied during recall repair do not resolve recurring lock-ups.

When: Occurring at 81,000 and 188,000 miles; happened multiple times per owner

Symptoms owners cite: Rear wheels lock up suddenly without warning; Occurs while towing campers; No warning lights illuminated; Hazardous situation during highway merging

Repairs/costs cited: Software update performed under recall 24V797000 in at least two cases; failure recurred despite update. Dealership unable to duplicate failure in one case. One owner traded vehicle to dealership due to unresolved safety concern.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA Campaign 24V797000 (Power Train). Software update applied but does not permanently resolve issue. Manufacturer stated one-time free repair applies; no further assistance offered after failure recurrence. One owner reports recall parts unavailable.

Transmission output shaft shear

Output shaft fractures or shears, rendering vehicle immobile. Owner reports this is a known common defect across model. Occurs at low to moderate mileage.

When: 20,000–80,000 miles reported by owners; one case at 68,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Loud bang while pulling onto road or accelerating; Complete loss of forward and reverse motion; Vehicle unable to move

Repairs/costs cited: Output shaft replacement required. No repairs completed in complaint narrative.

Unintended shift from Park to Drive while idling

Vehicle shifts itself from Park into Drive while stopped and idling in driveway with no driver input. Owner was forced to manually shift to Reverse and apply emergency brake as truck accelerated toward garage and house.

When: Low mileage (narrative does not specify)

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle shifts from Park to Drive on its own; No warning lights or alerts before shift; Vehicle accelerates toward fixed object

Repairs/costs cited: Owner manually controlled vehicle; no dealer repair described.

Automatic four-wheel-drive engagement causing differential and axle destruction

Vehicle automatically shifts into four-wheel-drive while driving in two-wheel-drive mode, causing catastrophic front-end, differential, and axle damage. Attributed to auto mode design flaw. Dealership unable to duplicate; independent mechanic confirmed differential damage related to auto mode feature.

When: 8,400 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle independently shifts into four-wheel-drive; Front differential damaged; Front axle destroyed

Repairs/costs cited: Front differential replacement needed. No repair completed. Independent mechanic diagnosed design flaw in auto mode feature.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer not made aware of failure; dealership could not duplicate.

DEF tank heater electrical fault causing wiring harness melt

DEF tank heater shorts internally, melting wiring harness and triggering limp mode. Critical hazard when towing trailers over long distances. One owner required two heater replacements at 24,000 and 47,000 miles.

When: 24,000 and 47,000 miles reported for replacement; limp mode issues ongoing

Symptoms owners cite: Wiring harness melts; Engine enters limp mode; Loss of power under load; Faulty part on extended backorder

Repairs/costs cited: DEF tank heater replacement performed. One owner required replacement twice by 47K miles.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No reparations from GM reported; parts on six-month backorder.

Diesel fuel injector connector short and engine misfire

Diesel fuel injector connector on cylinder 4 shorts out, causing engine misfire and significant power loss while driving. Vehicle becomes underpowered and unsafe.
