What stands out

Engine accounts for 38% of every owner complaint on file for this vehicle — the dominant problem area across 7 categories tracked.

Owners have filed 36 engine complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering engine on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2021 Mazda CX-30, particularly with the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, has a widespread excessive oil consumption issue that Mazda itself has documented in technical service bulletins TSB 01-003/23 and TSB 01-012-21. Owners report their engines burn approximately 1 quart of oil every 3,000–6,000 miles, sometimes faster, forcing them to top off oil between scheduled service intervals as early as 3,000–8,000 miles from purchase. Multiple owners report adding 6–7+ quarts over 25,000–29,000 miles of ownership. No external oil leaks are detected; the oil is being burned in the combustion chamber. Mazda's TSB attributes the issue to damaged valve seals on the exhaust side, predominantly in engines built before September 2021.

Owners also report blue smoke from the exhaust on cold start, a telltale sign of valve seal wear. Some dealerships have mentioned a future valve seal replacement as a potential fix, but the part is not yet available and certified technicians to perform the work are scarce. Current dealer protocol is to monitor the vehicle and add oil as needed. Mazda has issued no recall and provided no other repair solution. One owner additionally reported a battery failure at 23 months, and another encountered severe power loss and multiple warning lights requiring repeated PCM and sensor replacements—though whether these are related to the oil issue remains unclear.

Failure modes owners describe

Excessive Engine Oil Consumption

The 2021 Mazda CX-30 with turbocharged 2.5L engine burns oil at rates significantly higher than normal, typically requiring oil top-ups every 3,000–6,000 miles despite no external leaks being detected. Mazda issued TSB 01-003/23 and TSB 01-012-21 documenting this issue; the bulletin attributes it to valve seal damage on the exhaust side, particularly in engines built before September 2021.

When: Typically between 3,000–8,000 miles; earliest report at 2,100 miles; owners report needing 6–7+ oil changes within 25,000–29,000 miles of ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Low engine oil warning light illuminates between service intervals; Oil level drops approximately 1 quart every 3,000–6,000 miles; Blue smoke visible from exhaust on cold start; No external oil leaks detected upon inspection; Oil is being burned in the combustion chamber rather than leaking externally

Codes mentioned: P250f:00 (DTC associated with low engine oil level per TSB)

Repairs/costs cited: Mazda has no confirmed permanent repair. TSB 01-003/23 references a valve seal replacement as a future fix, but dealers lack technicians certified to perform it, and the part is not yet available. Current dealer response: monitor the vehicle and top off oil as needed; some dealers replace the valve stem cap as a temporary measure.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: TSB 01-003/23 acknowledges the issue and states that valve seals will require replacement once available, but Mazda currently has no fix. TSB 01-012-21 issued October 2021 for 2021 turbocharged models built prior to September 2021. No recall has been issued. Owners report Mazda customer relations provides no assistance and simply advises adding oil when necessary.

Recurring Low Oil Warning Light Without Confirmed Low Oil

Some owners report the low engine oil warning light illuminating repeatedly even though the dipstick reading appears normal or only slightly low. This creates confusion about whether oil is actually depleted or if the sensor/system is malfunctioning.

When: Reported at various mileages between 3,605 and 15,500 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Low engine oil warning light illuminates on dashboard and mobile app alerts; Dipstick check shows oil level at or near appropriate range; Warnings recur periodically without corresponding oil loss visible on dipstick; Dealer unable to confirm low oil when vehicle is brought in

Codes mentioned: P250f:00

Repairs/costs cited: No repair performed. Dealers have not identified a sensor malfunction or calibration issue.

Power Loss and Multiple Warning Lights (Possible Software/Electrical Issue)

One owner reported severe power loss (vehicle decelerated to 20 MPH) with multiple unknown warning lights at 36,500 miles. The vehicle was diagnosed sequentially with a failed MAP sensor, battery failure, and eventually a PCM requiring software update. Despite multiple interventions (battery replacement, MAP sensor replacement, PCM replacement, software update), the failure recurred repeatedly over a 53-day dealer visit span.

When: 36,500 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Multiple unknown warning lights illuminated on instrument panel; Vehicle decelerated to 20 MPH with loss of power; Failure was intermittent and not reproducible on first inspection; Codes could be reset but failure recurred

Repairs/costs cited: Battery replaced, MAP sensor replaced, PCM replaced, and software update performed over 53 days (19 days initial, then 34 additional days). Issue recurred despite all repairs.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer was made aware but provided no additional assistance.

Battery Failure

One owner reported that the vehicle's battery failed at 23 months after purchase on a brand-new vehicle, attributed to a faulty charging system. This occurred concurrent with low oil warning issues.

When: 23 months after purchase (2021 model, so approximately 2023)

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle failed to start or start after multiple attempts; Battery drained prematurely

Repairs/costs cited: Battery was replaced.

Low Engine Oil displayed on dashboard after only a couple thousand miles/four months from last oil change service. Known issue with this year/model for a year (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10203724-0001.pdf), but no recall or fix has been offered other than topping off or changing the oil. Common questions

How serious is the engine problem on the 2021 Mazda CX-30?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 36 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $3,100 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the engine typically fail?

Based on the 36 complaints filed, engine issues most often appear around 13,900 miles. Some report problems earlier; some make it well past 150,000 with no symptoms. Maintenance habits matter — vehicles that received timely fluid services and were not regularly overworked tend to last longer.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $3,100 for engine repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to engine?

No active recalls currently cover engine issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
