The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: The 2022 Volkswagen Atlas has multiple airbag-system recalls affecting passenger-seat safety detection and driver-side thorax airbag function; as of late 2024, parts remain on backorder with no repair ETA, forcing owners to restrict passenger-seat use indefinitely. Buy only if you accept the risk that safety repairs may take many months and have no firm resolution date.

Owners consistently report extended delays resolving recall notifications received as early as June 2024. Multiple owners say they were told not to use the front passenger seat but given no repair timeline, ETA, or explanation for why some vehicles fall into later service waves with no parts available. The most common stated issue is a faulty front passenger occupant detection system (ODS/PODs sensor), with some owners reporting airbag warning lights and DTC codes indicating driver's-side thorax airbag or passenger-side issues. One owner reported side airbags deployed without collision, and another reported an airbag error message triggering the warning light at 54,000 miles. Dealers cite parts on backorder; TSB #2066699 describes inspecting seat wiring harness connectors and replacing the driver's thorax airbag and harness when DTC B100B (resistance too high) is present. Owners express deep concern about relying on vehicles as primary transportation while unable to safely use the passenger seat. Several note VW offered no loaner vehicles or support during the repair hold-up, and that the unresolved recall makes vehicles unsellable. One owner requested a supervisor and was denied; others report inconsistent or missing information from dealers and VW customer service."

We have encountered two recalls (one that we are still expecting a fix for) and multiple issues with our VW Atlas that we purchased new in June 2022

November 26th, I was leaving my home to go tPublix. Upon exiting the Eagle Creek community gate, I proceeded down Eagle Creek Sanctuary Boulevard to avoid hitting a cat, I ended scraped the side of my tires and rims on the side curb. Unexpectedly, while driving, the airbags deployed, even though I had not come into contact with the cat or any other object. The steering wheel airbag did not deploy…

The PODs system is still hasn't been repaired since the recall was announced in June. I was told a fix was coming in August, but to no avail. I haven't been able to have someone in the passenger seat of the car since the recall.
