The failure pattern owners describe

Owners of 2024 Kia EV6 vehicles describe a pattern of sudden ICCU failure that cuts electrical power regardless of traction battery charge (often 80–95% full). Failures occur while driving on highways, on residential streets, in driveways, and while parked, with no prior warning in most cases. When the ICCU fails mid-drive, the vehicle enters limp mode or dies completely, causing loss of steering assist and regenerative braking—critical safety concerns in traffic. Owners report loud pops, dashboard warnings like "Check Electric Vehicle System" and "Stop Vehicle and Check Power Supply," and complete electrical system shutdown. The high-voltage fuse or inverter sometimes fails alongside the ICCU, with one owner reporting an inverter found "burnt and charred." Associated 12-volt battery discharge also occurs repeatedly in some vehicles. Failures cluster early in ownership (some within weeks, one at 616 miles) and continue after dealership repair or software-only recall (SC327). Dealerships confirm ICCU failure and replace the unit under warranty, though one dealer initially misdiagnosed the problem and some owners report uncertainty about permanent fixes given recurrence on social media discussion groups. Owners express concern this is a systemic hardware defect affecting multiple Kia and Hyundai EV models, noting they cannot obtain manufacturer confirmation that the vehicle is safe or that the root cause has been addressed.

Failure modes owners describe

ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit) Failure – Complete Loss of Power

The ICCU fails suddenly without warning, severing the connection between the high-voltage traction battery and the 12-volt electrical system. The vehicle loses all electrical power or drops into limp mode (severely speed-limited), becoming unsafe to drive. Owners report the failure occurs while driving, after startup, or while parked, regardless of traction battery charge state (some report 80–95% charge).

When: Between 616 miles and approximately 14,000 miles; most clusters occur early in ownership (weeks to months). One owner reports initial failure at 13,954 miles, second failure at ~14,000 miles.

Symptoms owners cite: Pop or thunk sound from rear electrical area; Check Electric Vehicle System warning on display; Stop Vehicle and Check Power Supply message; 12V battery discharge warnings (recurring); Complete loss of power or sudden transition to limp mode; Unable to start vehicle; no electrical response to ignition; Loss of steering assist in active traffic; Vehicle locked in gear; cannot shift to neutral; Inability to charge vehicle; Screen blackout then reboot with no warning

Codes mentioned: SC327 recall code (software-only fix applied in some cases, but did not prevent hardware failure)

Repairs/costs cited: ICCU replacement is standard fix; typically takes 5 days to one month for parts and repair. One owner reports replacement part had different model number but identical performance/failure risk. Associated fuse or 3-way valve assembly also failed in some cases. One dealer initially misdiagnosed as 12V battery failure; second dealership confirmed ICCU.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall SC327/SC302 released; involves software update. However, owners report the software-only fix did not prevent subsequent ICCU hardware failure. Kia initially denied some cases as warranty-covered defects rather than safety recalls, per owner complaints. Warranty covers replacement; loaner/rental car availability varies by dealership.

12-Volt Battery Discharge – Repeated Failure to Hold Charge

The 12V battery discharges unexpectedly and completely, leaving the vehicle unable to start. Multiple jump-starts required. Pattern suggests the ICCU is not properly charging or maintaining the 12V system from the high-voltage battery. Some owners experienced this repeatedly despite 12V battery replacement.

When: Can occur at any point during ownership; one rental car experienced three discharge events within weeks. Owner #7 had two separate incidents, weeks apart, requiring 7-day diagnostic periods each.

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle will not start; 12V battery fully discharged despite recent charge; Requires jump-start to become operational; 12V charging system fails to recharge after jump-start; Battery discharge warning appears almost daily or intermittently

Repairs/costs cited: Jump-start required to restore temporary operation. 12V battery replacement offered in some cases but does not resolve underlying ICCU charge-supply problem. No repair cost cited by owners.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Kia service centers have replaced 12V batteries under warranty in some cases without diagnosing or replacing the root-cause ICCU.

High-Voltage Fuse or Inverter Failure – Fire Risk and Component Damage

High-voltage fuse or inverter experiences thermal failure, producing audible pop or pop-like sounds and potential fire symptoms. One owner (#8) reported inverter found 'burnt and charred showing evidence of a fire in the system' after a highway failure. Another owner (#6, though involving external charger) noted burning plastic smell and damaged breaker.

When: Can occur at very low mileage (one instance at 616 miles, less than a month of ownership). Others within first year.

Symptoms owners cite: Loud pop sound from rear or vehicle; Burning plastic smell near charging hub or breaker; Charging connector extremely hot to touch; Charger hub overheating; Evidence of char or fire damage on inverter; Fuse blown

Repairs/costs cited: Fuse replacement; one owner's inverter showed char and potential fire damage, raising questions about repair adequacy vs. replacement need. One case involved damaged breaker requiring electrician replacement.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealer confirmed and replaced fuse and ICCU under warranty in cases where both failed together. No recall specifically addressing inverter/fuse thermal failure noted.

Loss of Steering Assist and Brake Function in Motion

When ICCU fails during active driving, the vehicle loses or severely reduces steering assist and automatic regenerative braking control. This creates acute collision risk on highways and in traffic.

When: Coincident with ICCU failure events, mid-drive.

Symptoms owners cite: Loss of power steering assist; Inability to control steering wheel or jerking steering response; Loss of regenerative braking function; Vehicle stuck in gear (cannot shift to neutral); Unexpected emergency braking (owner #14 reports injury from this); Limp mode with reduced maximum speed (25–55 mph)

Repairs/costs cited: ICCU replacement restores function. No interim failsafe or override noted by owners.

Electrical System Reboot and Intermittent Warnings

Vehicle screens blank out, reboot without warning, or display recurring error messages that appear then disappear. One owner reports check engine light came on at rental and would not stay off after reset. Another reports screen blanking and reboot with no prior warning.

When: Early in vehicle operation; one rental car from day of rental onwards.

Symptoms owners cite: Dashboard screens go black and reboot; Check engine light stays on or reappears after reset; Repeated battery discharge warnings (daily or multiple times); Error messages display then disappear; No incremental warning before catastrophic failure in many cases

Repairs/costs cited: No repair noted for intermittent warnings unless they precede ICCU replacement.

I've had to have my rental car jumped 3 times now, the check engine light has been on since I rented it, had to be reset and is now back on. I believe it's the 12v battery, it pops up warnings of battery discharge almost daily. All 3 times it was shut off and when I went to start it, it wouldn't turn on, 3 seperate people have jumped it for me now in 3 different locations, the last one being…

Multiple times the 12V battery has died without warning. Once in driveway while engine was charged to 93%, once while parked at work parking lot at charging station. Both times the car had to be jumped by AAA and driven to the dealership where it sat for 7 days each time with NO diagnosis, no loaner, no rental, and no transport. Finally after the second time, the dealership replaced the 12V…

I had an ICCU failure on 4/12/26. I was fortunate enough to be close to home, so I was able to get back home before the vehicle dropped into reduced power mode. As has been reported many other places, I heard a loud pop and moments later a number or warning messages came up on the display. It was towed to the dealer the following day and has been confirmed to be an ICCU failure.
