A loss of power steering assist can require greater steering effort, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Fix: Dealers will reprogram the EPS software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 20, 2025. Owners may contact Honda's customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is GMS. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning September 11, 2025.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2025 Acura RDX shows a consistent pattern of abrupt power steering loss during normal driving—typically between 400 and 6,800 miles, within the first few months of ownership. Owners describe the steering wheel becoming impossible to turn or completely locked mid-curve, forcing the vehicle into other lanes or toward obstacles like guardrails. One owner had the steering wheel lock twice on a second new RDX after the first vehicle failed at 414 miles. Another had a third occurrence across two vehicles despite two separate dealer repairs.

These steering failures trigger cascading warning lights: power steering, brake system, lane-keep assist, collision mitigation, and road departure mitigation warnings all illuminate simultaneously. Some vehicles attempt autonomous braking or steering correction during these events. One owner reported the dealer found diagnostic code U3000-49 (EPS control unit internal circuit malfunction) and low battery voltage despite highway driving, but after battery charging, Acura's tech line only advised steering rack replacement if the problem happened again.

Owners have been forced off roads into ditches, narrowly avoided head-on collisions, and in one case, the dealership could not reproduce the failure and refused to diagnose it. Acura has denied vehicle exchanges and offered no guarantee the failures won't recur, even after component replacement. The company acknowledged a steering recall (Campaign 25V582000) involving software calibration, but completion status remains unclear across these reports.

Failure modes owners describe

Sudden Loss of Power Steering Assist

Power steering system fails abruptly during normal driving, particularly during turns or curves, making the steering wheel extremely difficult or impossible to turn. Occurs without warning and recurs in some vehicles even after dealer replacement of steering components.

When: Between 414 and 6,800 miles; typically within first 3-6 months of ownership; occurs during highway and local driving at 20-75 mph

Symptoms owners cite: Steering wheel becomes extremely hard to steer or completely locks up; Vehicle pulls or veers uncontrollably in one direction; Dashboard message: 'Electric Power Steering System Problem. Steering Assist Not Available. Do Not Drive.'; Requires extreme physical force to steer vehicle to safety; Problem clears temporarily after engine restart

Codes mentioned: DTC U3000-49 EPS CONTROL UNIT INTERNAL CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers have replaced steering rack assemblies, power steering units, and engine wiring harness. One owner reported replacement after initial repair, then same failure recurred. Battery voltage was low in one case (11.98-12.09 volts) despite highway driving, though battery tested good after charging.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Acura Tech line indicates steering rack replacement if problem recurs. Acura customer care denied vehicle exchange despite safety concerns. One recall noted (Campaign 25V582000 for Steering) but completion status unclear; software calibration issues mentioned. No guarantee provided that issue won't happen again.

Simultaneous Cascade of Safety System Failures

Power steering failure triggers or occurs alongside multiple warning lights and system malfunctions affecting braking and lane control. Multiple dashboard warnings illuminate simultaneously, and some systems appear to malfunction (e.g., automatic braking engagement, lane-departure interference).

When: Occurs concurrently with steering failure; early in vehicle ownership (414-6,800 miles)

Symptoms owners cite: Brake System Problem warning light; Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) Problem warning light; Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) Problem warning light; Road Departure Mitigation System Problem warning light; Low Speed Braking Control Problem warning light; Vehicle may autonomously brake or attempt to steer during LKAS engagement; Dashboard message: 'Stop when safe'; Multiple warning icons illuminate (steering, brake, safety, lane-keep icons glow orange)

Codes mentioned: CMBS Problem notification via Acura Link

Repairs/costs cited: No specific repair information provided for cascade failures. Warnings clear after engine restart or extended shutdown. Dealers unable to reproduce or diagnose issues when warnings clear before arrival.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No formal manufacturer response to cascade failure pattern documented in narratives. Acura Link sends notifications of CMBS problems.

Steering Wheel Lock/Seize During Operation

Steering wheel becomes completely locked or seized mid-turn, preventing any movement or severely restricting movement (to a half-inch or less). Vehicle continues in unintended direction, forcing dangerous evasive maneuvers.

When: Various speeds (20-55 mph) and driving conditions; occurs unpredictably during turns and curves

Symptoms owners cite: Steering wheel becomes completely immobile or moves only a fraction of an inch; Vehicle forced into unintended lane or direction; Steering wheel Lock warning light illuminates; Multiple warning lights appear simultaneously; Steering wheel responds normally after restart

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers have replaced steering system components. One owner experienced lock-up three times across two vehicles, with dealer making same repair twice to same vehicle without resolution.

Vehicle Pulling or Veering Uncontrollably

Vehicle pulls or drifts strongly to one side (typically right) without driver input, forcing unintended lane changes. Often occurs with LKAS engaged or during curves. Combined with steering assist failure, creates immediate collision risk.

When: Occurs during turns and curves at 35-75 mph; some incidents with LKAS system actively engaged

Symptoms owners cite: Strong pull or drift to one side, usually right; Unintended lane change or lane drift; Vehicle attempts to turn into guardrail or opposite traffic lane; Happens during curves and on-ramp navigation; Often accompanied by loss of steering assist

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: One case noted tire rotation was completed but recall not finished. LKAS feature may be related to some incidents but no definitive manufacturer statement provided.
