2005 Chevrolet Cavalier owner complaints

The speedometer in the 2003-2005 Chevrolet cavalier is likely defective among many cars. Recently, when my speedometer in my 2005 Chevrolet cavalier stopped working at 93000 miles, it prompted me to do a search on google to see if anyone else had a similar problem. I bought the car with 72000 miles on it out of warranty and I soon realized (maybe in 2000-3000 miles) that the speedometer was around 5mph fast. I was able to test this using speed check signs posted by police and by using my GPS unit. At the moment, my particular speedometer works when the weather is warm (not too cold, not too hot), but many other's don't work at all, or this happened before theirs stopped working completely. It appears that many others with many different years of the car have experienced the same problem

Last night I was driving home in the dark and the speedometer was not correctly working. (this has happened many times since I bought the car several months ago) the speedometer will work sometimes, then will read erratic, fluctuates from 10 MPH to 120 MPH whether the car is parked or driving. This has been happening a lot over the past few months. I just bought the car a few months ago. The dealership recommends a new gauge cluster @ $500+. This is a common problem with the 2005 Chevy cavalier and other year models as well. I got on the internet and saw many entries about the same problem, same brand, same model. Gm should recall this and fix it. I and others are forced to drive in an unsafe condition. I am retired and cannot afford the part nor afford to trade the car in. Please help m

Defective speedometer instrument cluster, speedometer malfunctioning when vehicle is in operation , speedometer will indicate various speeds like 110, 100. 70, MPH or stuck in a MPH position when vehicle is not in operation with engine off. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet cavalier. The contact was driving 50 MPH when the speedometer failed to provide accurate readings and the vehicle experienced abnormally high engine rpms. The contact also stated that the temperature gauge failed to provide accurate temperature readings, displaying that the vehicle was overheating when it was not. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where the contact was advised that the temperature gauge would possibly need to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 126,000 and the current mileage was 130,000. Updated 01/10/12*lj

There is a known issue with the gauges in the 2005 Chevrolet cavalier causing them to malfunction or not function at all intermittently. This is a safety hazard because you do not know how much fuel you have, the temperature of your engine, or your speed when the gauges fail.

As many of other have already reported. Out of no where, my instrument cluster started going hay-wire. All the needles read inaccurate information by shaking, bouncing or saying in king 110 MPH in park. *tr

Already complained here once. Now my car fuel gage is broke gos all the way over and hits on my temp gauge every so offen. Dont really know how much gas I have in it, but least can go 300-365 miles. Depending on how much I drive. I dont think that it should break after only 41000 miles. Last time I wrote on here it was my temp gauge that hit on my speedometer.. Think before long all will go out. Wish someone would do something for these cars, kind exp to keep fixing. Paid cash for the other one to be fixed. Only drive the car once in awhile. Its not an old car so. Not very safe car as far as I am concerned, dont have the money to go buy a new one........

The contact stated that she restarted the vehicle and the failure recurred. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was 63,100.

My 2005 Chevrolet cavalier fuel and temperature gauges quit working now the tech is going haywire. I use a GPS so I know my speed. This is a major problem. Cost is over $500. To replace all the gauges. Lost gauges one at a time. *tr

I had test drove my vehicle and it was perfect, the seat didn't move and the seats weren't electric. I went home returned to pickup vehicle and on the way the seats moved and became hot as though there was a heater in them. I mentioned it to the dealer a few days later and all he said, "we did not add anything to your vehicle". Someone did, and I would like that which was installed removed whatever it is. *nm

The failure began july 2010 when the speedometer would stop functioning. The contact called both the dealer and the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000 and the current mileage was approximately 94,000.

The speedometer has failed to register any speed and is stuck in a position past the highest speed on the gage face. The tachometer needle jumps around also leaving you no way to judge your speed. I just bought the car. The previous owner said it failed some time ago while he was driving it. I am pacing other cars while I am waiting for repair parts to get here.

I was driving on the highway at about 65 MPH when my car unexpectedly increased it's speed to about 80-90 MPH. I initially thought the car accidentally some kind of way made cruise control come on. I am not a fan of cruise control so I wouldn't have turned it on. After the acceleration, I quickly attempted to get my car back down to normal driving speed because I was on the highway and did not want to crash with anyone by accident. I have a 2005 , cavalier and I have the same complaint as every one else my gauges are going hay wire.1st started at 62,000 miles the RPM started messing up 2nd the speed gauge was next acting as if it didn't wont to move. 3rd now at 89,000 miles the temp gauge is saying its hot when its not look under hood I see no heat coming from engine,check the coolant not steam .I am pissed and tired of this car.all three gauges that I mention are taking turns going up and down. I have had my car since 2004 and I loved it when I first drove it off the car lot. Then I have had problem after problem! My gauges mess up all the time. I can get into my car and start it up and it will say I'm doing 70 MPH and I'm not moving. I have had to replace my clutch twice in a year. It would be really nice if Chevrolet would do a recall on the gauges with all of the problems that people are having!! *tr

Speedometer stops working and stays on 100 car only has 35,000 miles, also the power steering line broke open and the emergency brake at times pops onto my tire causing my car to slam forward and then it releases. I replaced the brake line and the power steering line but the main problem is the speedometer /cluster
