There were no events leading to the failure. This is the 2nd such failure I have experienced. When approaching a stoplight in heavy traffic I was downshifting the motorcycle using the engine to decelerate. The clutch cable snapped without warning with the motorcycle still in gear. I was able to lock us the brakes and kill the motor before running into the back of a car. This is the 2nd…

powertrain · 7,800 mi · filed 10/15/2008

Since purchase, the bike has had trouble going into 2nd gear. It has popped out several times and a couple of times would not go into 2nd gear at all. Now, routinely, in 2nd gear the bike lurches and bucks when you give it gas to speed up. It stops when shifted into 3rd, 4th, or 5th. And also does not do this in first. I have almost wrecked this bike twice due to the violent bucking of the…

I purchased the Suzuki m109r brand new, within 2 months I begin having problems with the 2nd gear slipping out. I took the bike to dealership immediately, with no positive results. In 2006 they claimed that these problems were not apparent to Suzuki. I recently found pass invoices from dealership that explained that there had not been any defects or complaints referring the transmission in 2006.…

Bike shifts hard into 2nd gear. Once in gear the bike surges and bucks like the transmission is slipping. Sometimes it slips out of gear into neural. Mostly it stays in gear but bucks so bad I get wheel spin. Once in 3rd gear the problem stops. I have seen hundreds of online posts detailing the problem but I've never seen a solution in how to fix it. *tr

Common questions

How serious is the powertrain problem on the 2006 Suzuki Boulevard M109R?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 31 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $2,500 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the powertrain typically fail?

Across the 27 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most powertrain failures cluster between 5,000 and 13,000 miles, with the median around 8,300. A quarter of owners report trouble before 5,000; a quarter make it past 13,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $2,500 for powertrain repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to powertrain?

No active recalls currently cover powertrain issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
