Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2007 Ridgeline faces a large-scale Takata airbag defect affecting both driver and passenger sides. Recall notices went out March 2016 (driver side, campaign 16V344000) and July 2016 (passenger side, campaign 16V061000). The core issue: defective propellant wafers that can eject metal shavings or debris when the airbags deploy. One owner was injured in a collision—cuts too clean and straight to be from normal airbag contact, consistent with metal fragments.

The bigger complaint, however, is that parts have been chronically unavailable. From April 2016 onward, owners contacted dealers repeatedly only to be told "parts on back order" for months or years. Dealers offered $35/day rental allowance, which is inadequate for owners needing a full-size truck for work. Honda's customer service failed to follow up on requests, hung up on callers, or told owners to call back weekly hoping to reach the dealer on a day parts arrived—no proactive notification.

A separate failure mode: some owners report airbags that didn't deploy during actual crashes (20 mph rear-end and 55 mph front impact). One diagnosis identified a faulty ground wire. Another owner notes the deployment sensor sits behind the radiator, potentially vulnerable to obstruction.

Finally, one owner reports an intermittent SRS warning light traced to a suspected seat sensor, with Honda refusing warranty coverage despite the sensor being integral to the airbag system.

Failure modes owners describe

Takata Airbag Propellant Defect (Driver and Passenger Side)

Defective propellant wafers in Takata airbags; elevated risk of metal shavings or debris ejection on deployment.

When: Recall notices issued March 2016 (driver side, campaign 16V344000) and July 2016 (passenger side, campaign 16V061000); also campaign 16V061000 for driver side and 15V286000 noted in complaints

Symptoms owners cite: No active failure symptoms; identified through recall notices; Airbag warning light randomly illuminating (reported in one case); Potential hazard of metal shavings or debris upon deployment

Codes mentioned: 16V344000, 16V061000, 15V286000

Repairs/costs cited: Replacement airbag units required. Parts consistently unavailable despite months of wait; owners report repeated dealer appointments cancelled due to lack of inventory. No specific repair costs cited.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA campaigns 16V344000 and 16V061000 issued; Honda offered $35/day rental allowance (insufficient for full-size truck users); Honda failed to provide timely parts distribution or follow-up communication; some owners report Honda refused repair on geographic grounds despite Takata defect.

Airbag Non-Deployment on Impact

Airbags failed to deploy during collision impacts (20 mph and 55 mph), leaving occupants unprotected.

When: February 2010 (20 mph rear-end collision); incident with 55 mph deer strike (year not specified)

Symptoms owners cite: Airbags did not deploy despite significant front-end damage; Burning odor inside cab after impact; No airbag activation on high-speed (55 mph) front impact

Repairs/costs cited: First incident: faulty ground wire disabled airbag system (San Tan Honda diagnosis). Second incident: deployment sensor located behind radiator; no repair action documented.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: San Tan Honda identified faulty ground wire as cause; no recall or service bulletin documented for systematic ground wire failures.

Airbag Deployment-Related Injuries (Takata Defect)

Owner and passengers sustained unusual lacerations and cuts during frontal collision in which all airbags deployed; injuries inconsistent with normal airbag contact, suggesting metal shavings or sharp debris from defective Takata propellant.

When: Collision occurred; complaint updated 12/10/2015

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger suffered straight-line cut splitting hand from knuckles to mid-palm (16 stitches required); Driver sustained neck cuts; Rear passenger had multiple deep scratches on face with bleeding; Injuries verified by emergency room and orthopedic doctors as inconsistent with airbag deployment alone

Repairs/costs cited: No repair; post-collision injuries documented. Vehicle totaled.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No manufacturer response documented in this narrative; owner suspects metal shavings from Takata defect caused injuries.

SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) Warning Light—Seat Sensor Failure

SRS warning light comes on each time truck is started; dealer diagnostics inconclusive; suspected driver-side seat sensor malfunction.

When: Ongoing; fault intermittent with each start cycle

Symptoms owners cite: SRS light illuminates after starting truck; Light resets but reappears on next start; Diagnostic scan showed no fault code initially

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer estimates $1200 to replace driver-side seat sensor; repair may not resolve the issue and is not covered under Honda warranty despite being part of airbag safety system.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Honda does not cover seat sensor replacement under warranty; owner disputes exclusion since seat sensors are integral to SRS function.

Hit a deer at 55 MPH, dead center on the front of my vehicle. Entire front end was caved in but the air bags didn't deploy. I was told by the insurance adjuster that the deployment sensor is located behind the radiator, and he was surprised also that the bags didn't deploy. This is a public safety issue that needs to be handled swiftly. I'm thankful that I didn't run off the road and hit a tree.…

Common questions

How serious is the airbags problem on the 2007 Honda Ridgeline?

It's a meaningful issue. 69 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,100.

At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?

Across the 11 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 64,000 and 145,000 miles, with the median around 83,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 64,000; a quarter make it past 145,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to airbags?

No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
