Each bar shows the share of total complaints filed at that mileage range. Peak failure window highlighted. Some owners report problems earlier; some make it well past 150,000 miles symptom-free. Maintenance habits and driving conditions shift the curve as much as mileage alone.
Airbags accounts for 48% of every owner complaint on file for this vehicle — the dominant problem area across 8 categories tracked.
Owners have filed 142 airbags complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.
Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins
The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe
The primary issue affecting these vehicles is the Takata airbag inflator recall (NHTSA campaigns 16V381000, 16V383000, 16V387000) issued in May 2016. Owners received recall notices stating the inflators may rupture during deployment and cause serious or fatal injuries, yet replacement parts remain unavailable through 2017-2018. Dealerships across the country confirm no parts in stock and cannot provide estimated arrival dates. GM and Takata have offered no remedy timeframe. Several owners report dealers and GM refused to complete repairs at no cost despite the recall, and one owner was initially told to pay for the fix out of pocket.
A separate failure mode is dashboard cracking near passenger and driver airbag compartments, reported frequently across multiple model years. Cracks develop in the instrument panel and near the windshield. One owner was struck in the face by a piece of broken dashboard while driving on a rough road. Owners attribute the cracking to cheap polypropylene material that becomes brittle in heat and humidity. GM has acknowledged this as a defect in some cases, offering dashboard replacement but refusing to issue a recall.
One unverified report describes all six airbags deploying without warning while driving 60 mph on a highway, with no collision or impact. The manufacturer refused to investigate after the vehicle was turned over to insurance.
Another report documents airbag system failure to deploy during a frontal crash at 45 mph. A crash involving a 900-pound cow resulted in occupant head trauma and injuries despite the vehicle having airbags, suggesting deployment may have been inadequate.

Failure modes owners describe
Takata airbag inflator recall (16V381000, 16V383000, 16V387000)
Takata airbag inflators supplied to GM are defective and may rupture during deployment, causing serious or fatal injuries. Owners received recall notices starting May 2016 but replacement parts have remained unavailable for years, leaving vehicles unrepaired.
When: Recall issued May 2016; owners still unable to complete repairs as of 2017-2018
Symptoms owners cite: Service airbag warning light illuminated or flashing; Airbag warning indicator remained on; Passenger side airbag appeared slightly raised as if ready to deploy
Codes mentioned: 16V381000, 16V383000, 16V387000
Repairs/costs cited: Recall parts unavailable from manufacturer; dealers confirm no parts in stock and no estimated arrival date. Manufacturer unable to provide remedy or timeframe. Owner states dealer refused to perform repair at no cost despite recall notice.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall issued NHTSA 16V381000, 16V383000, 16V387000; Takata bankruptcy filed; GM stated parts not available, no decision on repair method; offered dashboard repair but not recall remedy
Inadvertent airbag deployment
All six airbags deployed without warning while vehicle was traveling at highway speed with no impact or crash. Driver coasted vehicle safely to roadside. Insurance investigated; dealer reported to manufacturer; manufacturer refused investigation due to insurance involvement.
When: At 100,000 miles; occurred while driving 60 mph
Symptoms owners cite: All six airbags deployed simultaneously with force; No prior warning or impact; Passenger side airbag shattered passenger windshield; Side curtain airbags deployed; Service airbag warning light not illuminated at time of deployment but had flashed intermittently prior
Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle towed to dealer; no diagnosis performed; no repair completed
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer refused investigation citing vehicle turned over to insurance company
Dashboard cracking near airbag compartments
Dashboard cracks developed in proximity to passenger and driver side airbag compartments and instrument panel. Cracks create safety concern regarding potential debris ejection during airbag deployment. Owners report cracking is widespread among 2007-2013 Chevy trucks and attribute it to cheap polypropylene dash material that becomes brittle in heat and humidity. One owner struck in face by broken dash piece while driving on rough road.
When: Between 60,000-69,000 miles; dashboard piece separated while driving on rough road at one vehicle; some reported cracks appeared within months or years of purchase
Symptoms owners cite: Multiple cracks visible in dashboard, especially near passenger airbag and instrument cluster; Cracks in proximity to windshield; Dashboard pad raised near front airbag area; Dashboard fractured during normal driving on rough road; Glare and noise from cracked dashboard affecting driver attention; Cracking occurs despite vehicle garaged majority of time
Repairs/costs cited: One vehicle: GM offered dealer repair of dashboard but unable to provide remedy for recall. Repair not performed. Other owners cite costs of repair as extremely expensive with high labor costs. One owner reports dashboard replacement due to cracking attributed to 'heat and humidity' by GM.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM stated cracking not their problem; offered dashboard repair in one case but not recall remedy; attributed cracking to 'heat and humidity' in Florida region
Airbag system failure to deploy during crash
Airbags failed to deploy during vehicle crash at 45 mph with front-end impact. Police report filed; vehicle involved in collision but safety devices did not function.
When: At unknown mileage; occurred during front-end impact at 45 mph
Symptoms owners cite: Airbags did not deploy during frontal collision; Front-end heavily impacted
Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle repaired by owner; no dealer diagnosis
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: None; manufacturer not contacted
Occupant injuries from dashboard trauma and lack of airbag protection
In one crash involving collision with 900-pound cow at 45 mph with crushed front end to windshield, occupants sustained injuries despite vehicle having airbags. Front-seat passenger's head struck dashboard while holding his head; driver and rear-seat passenger suffered whiplash, headaches, and other injuries. Suggests airbag deployment may have been inadequate or late.
When: At unknown mileage; during nocturnal collision with animal
Symptoms owners cite: Driver neck, back, spine injuries and vision problems; Front passenger head struck dashboard, head and neck injuries, headaches, blurry vision; Rear passenger busted lip, whiplash, headaches
Repairs/costs cited: None reported; occupants advised to miss lacrosse activities indefinitely
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: None recorded

I contacted a dealer to have my airbags replace due to a recall, and they said until Chevrolet release a remedy that they could not fix it.
"takata recall" this recall is still open and active on my vehicle! Neither gm or takata are doing anything about this! The gm recall site still states, incomplete, remedy not yet available". This is unacceptable, how long is going to be allowed to continue unresolved? The vehicle is considered dangerous because the airbag is faulty and nothing is being done!
Takata recall "16v383" dated may 27, 2016. It has been over two years and gm states "incomplete. Remedy not available". I am very concerned for my saftey and the safety of my family and other passencers! Can you do anything to get this safety issue resolved?
"takata recall" nothing has happened yet. However, we have not been in an accident. We feel like we are rolling the dice every time we use our vehicle. We have seen tv reporting where occupants have been grossly facially disfigured and or blinded from metal scraps from these airbags. Why are we being put at this dangerous risk? Since it appears, according to my Chevrolet dealer, we are no closer…
Dash on veicle has cracked on both sides twice in three years and Chevy will not fix because out of warranty. Dash is cracked next to top airbag and if airbag is deployed it will throw pieces of sharp dash which is thick plastic all over. This has happened to hundreds of others and Chevy will not fix or help.

Common questions
How serious is the airbags problem on the 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche?
It's a meaningful issue. 142 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,100.
At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?
Across the 50 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 60,000 and 116,977 miles, with the median around 84,091. A quarter of owners report trouble before 60,000; a quarter make it past 116,977. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.
What does it cost to fix?
Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.
Are there any recalls related to airbags?
No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
