What stands out

Airbags accounts for 34% of every owner complaint on file for this vehicle — the dominant problem area across 12 categories tracked.

Owners have filed 346 airbags complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

The overwhelming complaint is Takata inflator recalls. Owners received official notices (starting June 2016) that their airbags could rupture in a crash, but replacement parts didn't arrive for 12–36+ months. Dealerships put owners on waiting lists with no ETA. When owners asked about loaner vehicles or compensation, most were told to keep driving the "unsafe" car. Takata filed bankruptcy in 2017, tanking the supply chain further. Some owners finally got repairs in late 2018 or 2019; others still waited into 2021.

A separate chronic issue: the dashboard panel directly below the passenger airbag lifts, warps, or separates from the frame—sometimes without any accident. Gaps open up at corners, and glue/fasteners fail. Owners reported needing full dash replacement (~$2,500+), but Ford denied warranty coverage and insurance rejected it as cosmetic. One owner found the airbag cover no longer flush, creating a gap where small objects could fall in before potential deployment.

Brake pedal failures coincided with these recalls. Owners reported the pedal going soft or to the floor mid-drive, losing all stopping power until the vehicle was shut off and restarted. Ford issued a separate recall (19V904000) for the ABS control valve, but parts were equally unavailable.

Finally, documented crashes showed airbags not deploying when they should have—rear-end collisions, animal strikes at highway speeds. Injuries occurred. In one case, the vehicle was found to be missing airbags entirely. Owners feel abandoned: stuck with known defects, no repair timeline, and no buyback or rental vehicle support from Ford.

Failure modes owners describe

Takata inflator rupture risk (passenger and driver frontal airbags)

Takata-supplied airbag inflators prone to rupture during deployment, potentially causing shrapnel injury or death. Multiple recall campaigns (16V384000, 17V024000, 18V046000, 19V001000, 21V158000) issued but remedy parts unavailable for years.

When: Recalls issued 2016–2018; many owners waiting 1–3+ years without repair; some owners still unrepaired as of 2018–2021.

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning indicator illuminated; Owner received recall notice but no parts available for extended periods; Risk of rupture or failure to deploy in crash

Codes mentioned: 16V384000, 17V024000, 18V046000, 19V001000, 21V158000

Repairs/costs cited: Requires replacement airbag inflator; parts were unavailable for many months to years. Some owners report parts finally arriving in 2018–2019. Takata bankruptcy (filed 2017) delayed supply chain.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Takata recalls 16V384000, 17V024000, 18V046000, 19V001000, 21V158000. Ford initially directed owners to dealerships; later (2018 onwards) offered loaner vehicle while waiting for parts. No refund or buyback compensation cited. Ford instructed dealers not to remove defective airbags due to safety risk. Takata bankruptcy filing post-recall announcement complicated remedy.

Dashboard panel separation/warping and airbag cover deformation

Dashboard panel below passenger airbag separates from frame, buckles, warps, or pulls away from airbag cover, creating cosmetic and safety concerns. Glue or fasteners fail. In one case, airbag cover became flush and corner gap allowed foreign objects to fall near airbag.

When: Observed at various mileage points: 58,000 miles, 115,000 miles; sometimes without any accident or trigger. Some reports 1.5 years before formal complaint; others after recalls or repair attempts.

Symptoms owners cite: Dashboard panel lifts, buckles, warps, or separates from frame; Airbag cover no longer flush with dashboard; visible gap at corner; Glove compartment or AC vents malfunction secondary to panel lift; Dashboard panel pulls away from airbag cover area; Visible bulge near passenger airbag location

Repairs/costs cited: Requires full dashboard replacement; costs cited as ~$2,500 or more. Insurance often denies coverage as cosmetic or heat-related. Body shops report no reliable repair and risk of interfering with airbag deployment if panel is repaired while still attached to airbag.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Ford stated no recall issued and failure not covered under warranty. Referred customers to insurance or body shops. One dealer claimed 'worn dashboard' not recall-related despite panel coming loose post-recall repair.

Airbag failure to deploy in crashes

In multiple collisions and animal strikes, frontal and side airbags did not deploy. Injuries sustained. In one crash, passenger was too light to trigger deployment; in others, deployment sensors may have malfunctioned or vehicle missing airbags entirely.

When: Crashes occurred at 25–55 MPH and 30–35 MPH exit speeds; one animal strike at ~40 MPH. One vehicle reportedly missing airbags altogether.

Symptoms owners cite: No airbag deployment upon frontal impact; Driver and/or passenger injuries (back, neck, head) requiring medical attention; Vehicle struck another vehicle or animal; should have triggered airbag; No warning lights or diagnostic codes present before crash

Repairs/costs cited: No repair attempted post-crash. One vehicle found to be missing airbags entirely.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer not notified in some cases. In others, transferred complaints to NHTSA. No known remedy offered.

ABS brake system failure and soft brake pedal (related to Takata recall waiting period)

Brake pedal goes soft or spongy after hard braking and turning, causing loss of stopping power. Pedal recovers after vehicle is shut off and restarted. One owner reported brakes failed entirely (floored) at 25 MPH and again at 30–35 MPH. This failure is separate from Takata airbag issue but owners cite both as active recalls (19V904000 for brakes, 21V158000 for airbags) with no available remedy.

When: Occurred during city driving, highway driving, and emergency maneuvers. Failures at low to moderate speeds. Recall notice issued December 2019 with expected fix by Q1 2020; as of Q1 2021 (15 months), no repair parts available.

Symptoms owners cite: Brake pedal feels soft or goes to floor with little stopping power; Loss of braking during emergency stop situations; Pedal recovers after vehicle shutdown and restart; Vehicle coasts to stop over extended distance when brake fails

Codes mentioned: 19V904000, 21V158000

Repairs/costs cited: Ford technician cited ABS control valve as the defective component; described as costly repair. Replacement valve not yet available as of complaints filed in 2020–2021.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall 19V904000 issued for service brakes, hydraulic. Recall 21V158000 for airbags. As of 2021, no parts available; Ford has not expedited repairs. Owner requested buyback or full compensation due to dual active safety recalls.

Common questions

How serious is the airbags problem on the 2009 Ford Fusion?

It's a meaningful issue. 346 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,100.

At what mileage does the airbags typically fail?

Across the 64 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most airbags failures cluster between 60,000 and 120,000 miles, with the median around 89,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 60,000; a quarter make it past 120,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $1,100 for airbags repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to airbags?

No active recalls currently cover airbags issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
