When does it fail?
Of the 26 body complaints filed for the 2009 GMC Yukon, here's the actual mileage breakdown — failures cluster heaviest at 75,000-100,000 mi.
Each bar shows the share of total complaints filed at that mileage range. Peak failure window highlighted. Some owners report problems earlier; some make it well past 150,000 miles symptom-free. Maintenance habits and driving conditions shift the curve as much as mileage alone.
Owners have filed 26 body complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.
No new NHTSA body complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 10 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.
Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins
The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering body on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe
Dashboard cracking is the dominant complaint across these 2009 Yukons. The cracks appear high on the dash—above the passenger airbag, above the instrument panel, and around the glove box—and they form spontaneously. Many owners describe noticing a rattling noise in the center dash just before a crack appears. What stands out: these aren't impact cracks. A vehicle stored in a garage overnight develops a 6-inch crack by morning with no collision. Cracks show up while the owner is driving or just sitting in a parked truck. The plastic clips that secure the dashboard to the underlying structure break loose, and the dash sags. Mileage ranges from 54,000 to 114,000 miles when owners first report it. Dealership diagnosis confirms the entire dashboard assembly needs replacement, running about $1,600. GM has received these complaints, assigned case numbers, but declined to recall—they classify it as cosmetic, not safety.
The other consistent failure: chrome door handles peel and separate from the underlying plastic or metal, exposing sharp edges that cut fingers. This affects both front doors and rear doors; some owners have had to replace all four handles. Service departments acknowledge it's a known problem with the chrome-plated models, particularly 2007 and later GM SUVs, but won't guarantee replacement handles won't fail the same way.

Failure modes owners describe
Dashboard cracking
Upper and lower dashboard panels develop cracks, particularly in the area above and around the passenger and driver-side airbags, above the instrument panel, and above the glove box. Cracks appear spontaneously without impact or known cause—sometimes noticed after hearing rattling noises in the dash. Plastic clips holding the dashboard together break loose. Owners report cracks are severe and worsening, with sharp plastic edges creating injury hazards.
When: 54,000 to 114,000 miles; some reported as early as after a single overnight garage storage or during summer months
Symptoms owners cite: Visible cracks in upper dashboard near passenger airbag; Cracks above instrument panel and steering column; Cracks above glove box; Rattling noise from center of instrument panel before crack appears; Broken plastic clips securing dashboard; Sagging dashboard with airbag no longer properly supported; Crack formation without impact or known cause
Repairs/costs cited: Dealership diagnosis confirms dashboard replacement required. Repair cost cited as approximately $1,600 at dealership. First replacement sometimes covered under warranty; subsequent replacements at owner expense.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GMC notified in several cases (case number 8-3684476402 referenced); no recalls issued. Manufacturer stated issue must be processed through an association but declined to pursue recall, treating it as cosmetic rather than safety issue.
Chrome door handle peeling and failure
Exterior door handles—both front passenger and driver-side, and rear doors—lose chrome plating, exposing sharp underlying material that cuts fingers. Chrome coating separates from the handle structure at the top and edges, becoming extremely sharp. Handles detach completely from the door. Problem identified as affecting chrome-plated models specifically; appears to be a widespread issue among 2007 and later GM SUVs (Yukon and Tahoe).
When: Mileage not specified in complaints; problem documented as common starting around 2007 model year
Symptoms owners cite: Chrome plating peeling and separating from handle; Sharp edges on handle causing cuts to hands and fingers; Severe cuts requiring bleeding to stop; Handle detachment from door; Front passenger side door handle came off on separate occasions
Repairs/costs cited: Replacement handles available; dealers willing to replace at customer expense but provide no guarantee new handles will not develop the same problem. Some owners have replaced all four door handles.
Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Multiple service managers and sales personnel acknowledged this is a known issue with chrome-plated models. Online forums report widespread complaints from 2007 onward. GM has not issued a recall; problem treated as cosmetic and excluded from extended warranty coverage.
Door handle mechanical failure
Exterior door handles malfunction mechanically—sometimes failing to open the door and other times getting stuck in the shut position, preventing the door from closing properly.
When: Mileage not specified
Symptoms owners cite: Handle fails to open door; Handle gets stuck in closed position; Door cannot be shut due to stuck handle

I came out to a cracked dashboard this morning. The crack is right around the airbag and I'm concerned the cracked dash can either punture the airbag if deployed or send plastic peices flying at a high rate of speed
Dashboard has cracked immediately adjacent to airbag and above left side of instrument cluster. Concern for safety upon collision and/or airbag deployment.
The door handles on both the driver and passenger side have become so sharp that when trying to open the door they cut your finger. Both my wife and I have had our fingers cut from slight to very bloody. This appears that it is an ongoing problem that gm refuses to deal with. *tr
Common questions
How serious is the body problem on the 2009 GMC Yukon?
It's a meaningful issue. 26 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $1,500.
At what mileage does the body typically fail?
Across the 19 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most body failures cluster between 65,400 and 98,000 miles, with the median around 85,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 65,400; a quarter make it past 98,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.
What does it cost to fix?
Independent shops typically charge around $1,500 for body repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.
Are there any recalls related to body?
No active recalls currently cover body issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
