critical NHTSA 15V313000 May 27, 2015

Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Dodge Ram 2500, 2004-2008 Dodge Ram 1500 and Durango, 2006-2009 Dodge Ram 3500, 2008-2010 Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500, 2007-2008 Chrysler Aspen, 2005-2010 Chrysler 300, 300C, 300S, and SRT8, 2006-2010 Dodge Charger, 2005-2008 Magnum, 2005-2011 Dodge Dakota, and 2006-2009 Mitsubishi Raider vehicles

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Fix: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicle until the recall repair is complete. Chrysler will notify the affected Chrysler and Dodge owners and Mitsubishi will notify the affected Raider owners. Dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began for Chrylser on June 8, 2015. The recall for Mitsubishi started on June 24, 2015. Chrysler and Dodge owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Mitsubishi owners may call 1-888-648-7820. Chrysler's number for this recall is R25. Note: This recall supersedes recall 14V817 in its entirety. Vehicles that have had their driver side frontal air bag replaced previously need to have their air bag replaced under this recall as well.

The failure pattern owners describe

The overwhelming complaint here is a parts supply failure, not a manufacturing defect. Owners received recall notices for Takata airbag inflators under campaigns 15V313000 and 16V352000, but dealers and the manufacturer could not supply replacement parts for months or years. One owner stated the shortage "has been going on for years" as of late 2015. Dealers reported the manufacturer was shipping only 10 parts per week, forcing owners onto waiting lists with no estimated repair date. Owners contacted manufacturers directly and received no commitment—they were told to wait.

Two owners reported actual airbag failures in crashes. One was struck on the passenger side, vehicle rolled, and neither frontal airbag deployed; the other was in a highway T-bone where airbags also failed to deploy. Neither incident resulted in injuries, but both demonstrate the risk owners faced while driving recalled vehicles waiting for unavailable parts.

Some owners' complaint narratives expressed frustration that manufacturers and dealers offered no alternative solutions—no temporary replacement vehicles, no incentives, nothing—while they carried known defective airbags. The core issue is systemic: recalls issued, defects identified, but supply chain broken and owners left holding unusable vehicles.

Failure modes owners describe

Takata airbag inflator recall—parts unavailable

Owners received recall notifications (campaigns 15V313000, 16V352000) for Takata airbag inflators but replacement parts were not available from dealers for extended periods. Manufacturers could not provide estimated dates for parts arrival. This created a situation where vehicles were known to have defective inflators but could not be repaired.

When: Recall notifications issued 2015–2016; parts shortage persisted for years

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag warning light illuminated; Check engine warning light illuminated

Repairs/costs cited: Replacement Takata airbag inflators; dealers reported manufacturer supplied only 10 parts per week; owners placed on waiting lists

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA campaigns 15V313000 and 16V352000 (Takata recall); manufacturer acknowledged parts shortage but could not commit to availability timeline

Airbag non-deployment in crash

Owner reported a crash where frontal airbags failed to deploy despite impact severity warranting deployment. Vehicle was T-boned on passenger side and rolled over. Another owner reported being involved in a highway crash where airbags did not deploy.

When: Mileage 46,000 (first incident); highway crash (second incident)

Symptoms owners cite: Frontal airbags (driver and passenger) did not deploy during crash; No airbags deployed in T-bone rollover incident

Repairs/costs cited: No injuries reported in either incident; no police report filed for first incident

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Takata recall campaigns 15V313000, 16V352000
