What stands out

Of the 10 model years of Lincoln MKX we track for engine problems, this one carries the most owner complaints on file — 18.

No new NHTSA engine complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 8 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.

The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: The 2011 Lincoln MKX has multiple owner reports of sudden, complete engine stalls while driving at highway speeds—some recurring repeatedly over months—plus serious water pump failures that introduce coolant into engine oil, requiring expensive engine replacement. If you're considering this model, have any prospective purchase inspected by an independent mechanic who can pressure-test the cooling system and check for signs of coolant in the oil.

Owners report sudden, unwarned engine stalls at highway and city speeds—some occurring three times in a single year—with complete loss of power, steering, and braking assistance. The engine typically restarts after minutes, but dealers struggle to find or replicate the problem, leaving owners uncertain the issue is fixed. One owner's husband narrowly avoided a crash on an expressway; another reported only 1,000 feet of road to stop before hitting a guard rail. Lincoln's response to the design-flaw complaint was to offer $250 partial reimbursement and suggest the owner maintain fuel above 1/2 tank.

More severe is a pattern of water pump failures allowing coolant to seep into engine oil, causing catastrophic engine damage requiring $7,000–$10,000 replacement. One owner documented three water pump replacements in two years (May 2021, June 2022, January 2023). Owners describe knocking or clicking sounds before failure and report dealerships performed routine maintenance two months before engine failure without identifying any problem. One owner was stranded roadside with no cell service after complete power loss on a highway.

Failure modes owners describe

Complete engine stall and power loss while driving

Engine suddenly shuts off without warning while vehicle is in motion at highway and city speeds, causing complete loss of power, steering, and braking assistance. Vehicle typically restarts after stalling. Occurs repeatedly in some cases (up to 3 times over 6-12 months for certain owners).

When: Various mileages and timeframes; one at 11,000 miles, another at 150,000 miles; some owners report recurring incidents within 6-12 months

Symptoms owners cite: Sudden engine shutdown while driving; Loss of power steering and power brakes; Wrench symbol or check engine light on dashboard; Engine restarts after stalling; AWD failed warning message (one case)

Codes mentioned: No diagnostic codes present in some cases, Wrench symbol (powertrain indicator)

Repairs/costs cited: Ford dealerships unable to replicate issue; throttle body replacement performed in at least one case ($250 Lincoln contributed toward repair). Software update (computer control module) applied in one case.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Lincoln offered $250 partial reimbursement toward throttle body repair in one case; stated 'things fail in cars' when confronted about design issue. Dealership suggested maintaining fuel tank above 1/2 full to prevent stalling.

Water pump failure causing coolant contamination of engine oil

Internal water pump fails, allowing coolant to mix with engine oil, resulting in catastrophic engine damage. One owner reported three water pump failures in approximately two years (2021–2023). Owners describe hearing knocking or clicking noises before engine shutdown.

When: One owner with multiple failures: first water pump replaced 5/16/21, second replacement failed 6/19/22, third failure as of 1/1/23. Other cases not specifically dated but one at 48,000 miles; another had service 2 months before failure; one at 112,000 miles (out of warranty).

Symptoms owners cite: Burning smell; Knocking or clicking noise before shutdown; Low coolant warning light illumination; Vehicle starts smoking; Engine stalls; Engine misses (hesitation)

Repairs/costs cited: Engine replacement required in most cases, costing approximately $7,000–$10,000. One owner spent $2,500 on water pump and coolant flush with no guarantee of engine integrity. Owners report dealership performed service 2 months prior without identifying or preventing failure.

Throttle body failure with oil leak

Throttle body fails, causing engine to stall. At least one case linked to oil leak into throttle body assembly. Vehicle exhibits warning signs of imminent stall before complete failure.

When: Not precisely dated; one case involved recurring stalls over time

Symptoms owners cite: Engine stalling; Loss of power; Vehicle feels like it will shut off suddenly; Wrench warning light

Repairs/costs cited: Throttle body replacement resolved the issue in one case.

Engine control or cooling system module failure

Cooling system control module fails, causing vehicle to smoke while parked and illuminating low coolant warning light.

When: At approximately 48,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Low coolant level warning light illumination; Vehicle smoking while parked; Potential engine damage risk

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle was not repaired according to report.

I was driving on a 35 miles/per hour zone without any warning I heard the car making clicking noise and completely shut down. I had someone checked it for me. My coolant was going into my engine. I got it towed to dealer the engine has to be replaced for almost $10,000.00. I had the car service 2 months ago at the dealer and I still over 3,000.00 miles until my next service.

The throttle valve assembly was bad. The car stopped running when the wife was driving highway 105 at 50 MPH. She turned on the flashers and was able to get off to the side of the highway after a short time the car was able to be restarted and driven back to the house. The same thing happened again about two months later. This is a very dangerous situation. The engine stops with no warning.
