In december 2020, I purchased a used 2012 Cadillac srx. Once I drove the vehicle at night, I noticed the headlights are very dim. Due to the low lighting level, the bright lights are best used. The headlights are dim while the vekicle is parked or driven

My low beam headlights are extremely dim. Upon diagnosis, there is nothing wrong with the wiring or the bulbs but there is a defect with the headlights on the 2010 to 2015 Cadillac srx's. It was explained to me that the seal fails and allows moisture in the headlight which causes a haze to build up in the enclosed light cover which in turn makes the lights dim. I have been unable to drive my…

Headlights are so dim I will not drive car at night. Tried changing bulbs buy no improvement.

lighting · filed 12/22/2022

Headlights are very dim and do not provide sufficient lighting at night. This is a known problem with this model and GM has been aware since 2010 that this is an issue. The exterior housing unit fails and allows moisture into the headlight unit and can cause dim lights and shorts. Car is unable to be driven at night without high beams on and this causes distress and blindness to other drivers.…

Common questions

How serious is the lighting problem on the 2012 Cadillac SRX?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 221 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $250 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the lighting typically fail?

Across the 133 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most lighting failures cluster between 58,400 and 94,000 miles, with the median around 76,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 58,400; a quarter make it past 94,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $250 for lighting repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to lighting?

No active recalls currently cover lighting issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
