What stands out

Owners have filed 28 steering complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

No new NHTSA steering complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 10 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.

The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: Owners report widespread steering instability and sticking at highway speeds, plus rear suspension fishtailing that can cause uncontrolled lane drift. Hyundai has dismissed these complaints as normal design, dealers cannot consistently diagnose or repair, and major steering or suspension repairs are expensive and often delayed by parts shortages.

A large cluster of owners describe steering that sticks or locks at the center position when driving straight at highway speeds (50–70 mph), particularly on the 2014 model. The wheel feels bound and requires extreme force to overcome the resistance, then over-corrects sharply, sending the car into adjacent lanes. This happens repeatedly on the same roads, not just once. Multiple owners point to this as a design defect affecting many 2011–2015 Elantras.

The other main issue is rear-end instability and fishtailing at highway speeds, especially over bumps. Owners describe the car wandering side to side, drifting into other lanes, and fishtailing so severely they feel they're losing control. One owner traded in a 2013 Elantra after complete steering loss at 4,300 miles, then experienced identical symptoms on a replacement 2014 model starting at 1,300 miles—same roads, same issue twice.

A smaller subset report hard or failed power steering: one owner lost power steering entirely on the freeway at 65 mph; another lost steering control in a parking lot when the battery failed. Dealers have blamed design, cited battery failures, or claimed they can't duplicate the problem. When repairs were authorized (rack and pinion replacement, steering column replacement, rear shock replacement), costs were high and parts often unavailable. Hyundai customer service has offered minimal assistance beyond acknowledgment.

Failure modes owners describe

Steering wheel sticks or locks at center position

Steering wheel becomes difficult or impossible to move smoothly, with a distinct catching or binding sensation in the center position when driving straight, especially at highway speeds. Owners must apply significant force to overcome the resistance, which then causes sudden over-correction. Some owners describe needing to jiggle or 'unlock' the wheel repeatedly.

When: Begins early in vehicle life; reported from 1,300 to 67,300 miles. Most common at highway speeds 50–70 mph when driving straight.

Symptoms owners cite: Steering wheel sticks or catches at center position; Excessive force required to turn wheel from center; Over-correction after breaking free of resistance; Wheel feels locked or bound; Pop or click sensation when overcoming resistance; Power steering light and traction control light illuminate

Repairs/costs cited: Narrative #9 cites rack and pinion and clockspring malfunction requiring replacement; dealer quoted high cost, owner took to independent shop. Narrative #21 states steering wheel and column needed replacement on 6,400-mile vehicle, part was on backorder.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Narrative #9: Hyundai stated only a rubber seal would be covered under warranty, no further assistance offered. Narratives #2 and #11 report dealers dismissed the issue as normal design, and a Hyundai district manager claimed never hearing of swaying issue.

Rear suspension instability and fishtailing at highway speeds

Vehicle rear end sways, fishtails, or becomes unstable when turning or driving at interstate speeds, particularly over bumps. Car drifts laterally into adjacent lanes and feels as though control is being lost. On a 2013 model, owner reported complete loss of steering control at 4,300 miles, requiring trade-in.

When: Reported from 1,300 to 67,300 miles. Occurs consistently at highway speeds and worsens over time; most noticeable when turning on curves or crossing bumps.

Symptoms owners cite: Rear end sways or fishtails at highway speeds; Vehicle drifts into other lanes; Unstable feel through the entire car, not just steering wheel; Wobble sensation at speeds above 55 mph; Rear suspension hops when hitting bumps, especially in turns; Vehicle feels as if losing control

Repairs/costs cited: Narrative #14 reports dealer replaced both rear shocks with little improvement; front of car still bounces/hops at speeds over 15 mph. Narrative #5 mentions some owners report aftermarket rear shocks improve the issue.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Hyundai customer care (Narrative #1) stated they would do what needed to be done to fix the issue but no resolution documented. Narrative #2 reports dealer and Hyundai district manager claim this is how the car is designed.

Loss of power steering or hard steering

Power steering system fails or becomes extremely difficult to operate, leaving owner unable to turn the wheel. In one critical case, vehicle lost power steering while traveling 65 mph on freeway, requiring driver to apply excessive force to maneuver to shoulder. Another owner at low speed in parking lot lost steering control when battery failed.

When: Reported at 6,400 miles and on highway at speed; also at low speed when battery failure occurred.

Symptoms owners cite: Power steering fails or becomes extremely stiff; Steering wheel cannot be turned or turns with extreme difficulty; Vehicle shakes violently (described as if brake is being applied); Power steering light illuminates; Complete loss of ability to steer

Repairs/costs cited: Narrative #4 involved violent shaking and loss of power steering; dealership initially blamed battery, then stated 'catastrophic battery failure' caused complete shutdown. Narrative #21 diagnosed steering wheel and column needing replacement on 6,400-mile vehicle.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Narrative #4 states owner filed complaint with Hyundai corporate but outcome unknown. Narrative #21 repair was approved but part was on backorder at time of complaint.

Steering wheel and suspension instability when turning over bumps

When turning through curves that contain road bumps or imperfections, the vehicle chatters sideways, becomes unstable, or loses traction momentarily. On rougher roads, the instability is severe enough to cause the vehicle to slide laterally.

When: Occurs on bumpy roads or highway ramps; reported at 50–55 mph and higher speeds.

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle chatters or slides sideways when turning over bumps; Rear suspension hops in turns; Vehicle slides into shoulder or opposite lane; Instability felt through entire vehicle

Repairs/costs cited: Narrative #10 vehicle slid sideways approximately 2 feet and hit shoulder, blowing rear tire; tire replacement cost ~$161.

Steering wheel hard or rough to turn (non-power-loss)

Steering wheel feels rough, stiff, or difficult to maneuver, especially during turns or U-turns on streets, distinct from complete power steering loss. Occurs even when vehicle is slow-speed driving in town.

When: Reported early in vehicle life; complaint references this occurring even before engine problems developed on one vehicle.

Symptoms owners cite: Steering wheel rough or not smooth; Difficult to turn wheel, especially for U-turns and street turns; Requires pulling hard on wheel to make turns

Repairs/costs cited: Narrative #8 owner notes this issue predated more severe engine and battery failures but does not describe any repair attempted.

Steering system malfunction triggered by battery failure

When vehicle battery fails or loses charge, the steering system becomes inoperable, immobilizing the vehicle. This creates a hazard if failure occurs while vehicle is in motion.

When: Reported at 10,500 miles and during low-speed parking-lot driving on vehicle less than 2 years old.

Symptoms owners cite: Steering wheel fails to turn when battery fails; Vehicle unable to start or steer simultaneously; Failure recurred three times on one vehicle

Repairs/costs cited: Narrative #7 vehicle failed to start and steering wheel failed to turn; failure recurred three times, vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Narrative #19 battery died and disabled car control; owner lost control in parking lot.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Narrative #7 states manufacturer was made aware and said they would call back but did not. Narrative #19 vehicle was taken to dealership but no documented outcome.

When driving at highway speeds in a straight line the steering sticks. As the car drifts in the lane it takes an extreme amount of pressure to move the steering wheel and then it over corrects. I have two elantras and they both have the same problem. I have been researching and see people have had this complaint since 2011.

Common questions

How serious is the steering problem on the 2014 Hyundai Elantra?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 28 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $700 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the steering typically fail?

Across the 23 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most steering failures cluster between 9,000 and 67,300 miles, with the median around 14,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 9,000; a quarter make it past 67,300. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $700 for steering repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to steering?

No active recalls currently cover steering issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
