Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering electrical on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

PITSTOP: MFC, CONCERNS FOR DISABLED OPERATION - This Pitstop provides information regarding concerns with disabled operation of Multi-Function Camera (MFC) on some Kia vehicles. When normal operation is not possible due to certain outside environment conditions (such as sunlight glare, heavy rain, sunlight, snow, fog and/or substance/debris) causing a temporary concern. This stops operation causing Warning Lamp ON and/or Pop-up Message displayed on the cluster. This is a normal operation of the ADAS and once environment conditions improve and/or substance/debris are removed, the system will clear itself and operate normally.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners report six distinct electrical failures in the 2014 Cadenza. The smart key's release button detaches too easily during normal pocket movement, causing the metal key to fall out without warning—creating stranding risk and potential security exposure.

The electric parking brake and auto hold system gets mechanically stuck after normal engagement, with the brake remaining applied even after disengagement commands. Dashboard amber lights for EPB, auto hold, traction control, and ABS come on together; vehicles become completely immobilized and require towing.

Kia issued interim recall 23V652 in November 2023 for HECU electrical short-circuit fire risk but has not supplied repair parts as of April 2024—four-plus months later. Owners report being told to park vehicles outdoors to mitigate fire danger with no timeline for remedy. At least one parked vehicle caught fire at 16,000 miles; another experienced complete electrical shutdown at highway speed, resulting in loss of power steering, braking, and ultimately engine fire requiring a new engine.

A battery failure at 45,860 miles caused loss of braking assist while driving downhill. After replacement, the vehicle stalled repeatedly at low speeds with check engine light illumination. One owner also reports extensive rust corrosion under the driver seat and steering components, with swollen and split dashboard requiring replacement—after which the computer began malfunctioning.

Failure modes owners describe

Smart Key Release Button Mechanism Failure

The release button that separates the plastic key/remote from the metal center-cut key detaches prematurely during normal handling, causing the metal key to fall out of the remote housing unexpectedly.

When: Within one month of purchase

Symptoms owners cite: Metal key detaches from plastic remote housing during pocket movement; Key falls without audible indication; Key separates before release button is flush with plastic body

Electric Parking Brake (EPB) and Auto Hold System Malfunction

EPB and auto hold become mechanically stuck after engaging/disengaging, with motor sound persisting abnormally and brake remaining applied despite operator commands to release. Dashboard lights show amber warnings for EPB, auto hold, traction control, and ABS. Vehicle becomes inoperable and requires towing.

When: During normal parking operation

Symptoms owners cite: Motor sound continues for approximately 30 seconds after normal duration; Brake physically stuck and will not release; Amber warning lights for EPB, auto hold, traction control, and ABS displayed; Vehicle immobilized and unable to move forward or backward

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle required towing to dealership

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Service agents and manager confirmed this is a known recurring issue across multiple Kia makes; appears to lack formal recall

Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) Electrical Short Circuit—Fire Risk

HECU fuse subject to electrical short circuit that can cause engine compartment fire. Kia issued interim safety recall (23V652) recommending owners park vehicles outside while awaiting part availability. Critical parts shortage has left recall unresolved for extended periods (4+ months reported).

When: Intermittent; recall issued November 2023

Symptoms owners cite: Potential for engine compartment fire due to electrical short; Actual fire reported in parked vehicle at 16,000 miles; Vehicle caught fire while parked with all electrical systems active

Repairs/costs cited: Recall remedy involves replacing HECU fuse when parts become available

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Kia interim recall 23V652 issued November 14, 2023; parts delayed beyond 4+ months as of April 2024; manufacturer offers no interim workaround beyond parking outdoors

Complete Electrical System Failure During Operation

Vehicle loses all electrical power while driving, disabling dashboard, odometer, radio, steering power assist, and braking ability. Power loss occurred at highway speeds and was accompanied by smoke and engine fire.

When: During normal highway driving

Symptoms owners cite: All electrical components shut off simultaneously (odometer, dash lights, radio); Heavy steering (loss of power assist); Complete loss of braking power; Smoke and fire visible from engine compartment; Engine caught fire after power loss

Repairs/costs cited: Engine required complete replacement; dealerships refused to perform repairs

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Kia customer support engaged but resolution ongoing; dealerships redirected to manufacturer

Battery Failure with Secondary Engine Stalling

Battery failure at 45,860 miles caused loss of braking assist while vehicle was in motion downhill. After battery replacement, vehicle stalled unexpectedly at low speed in an intersection, with check engine light illuminating and stalling recurring.

When: At 45,860 miles; repeated stalling after initial battery replacement

Symptoms owners cite: Brake pedal loss of effectiveness while driving downhill at 20 mph; Vehicle failed to stop and continued rolling until reaching flat ground; Engine stall at 10 mph in intersection after battery replacement; Check engine light illuminated during stall

Repairs/costs cited: Battery replaced at dealership

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer notified but no follow-up action documented

Corroded and Damaged Dash and Underlying Electrical Components

Extensive rust corrosion observed beneath driver seat and throughout steering control area. Dashboard swollen, split open, and required replacement. Computer and vehicle electronics began malfunctioning after dash replacement, suggesting underlying corrosion-related electrical damage.

When: Present from time of purchase; issues apparent early in ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Extensive rust corrosion under driver seat; Rust on steering control components; Dash swollen and split open; Computer acting erratically after dash replacement; Vehicle electronics malfunctioning

Repairs/costs cited: Dash replaced under what appears to be recall or warranty service; computer issues remain unresolved

Common questions

How serious is the electrical problem on the 2014 Kia Cadenza?

It's a meaningful issue. 10 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $850.

At what mileage does the electrical typically fail?

Based on the 10 complaints filed, electrical issues most often appear around 31,368 miles. Some report problems earlier; some make it well past 150,000 with no symptoms. Maintenance habits matter — vehicles that received timely fluid services and were not regularly overworked tend to last longer.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $850 for electrical repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to electrical?

No active recalls currently cover electrical issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
