Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering brakes on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

Owners report the AEB system activating repeatedly without any obstacles present—on highway at 40 mph, in parking garages, while backing up, and during slow city driving. A 2019 owner had a sonar control unit replaced in March 2020, but the AEB continued to malfunction and activate unprompted on an empty highway intersection in October 2020. Another owner experienced three false activations over nine months—in winter snow, over railroad tracks, and in rain—at varying mileages. A third owner had the system activate while pulling into a driveway at near-stop speed and twice while backing up to park, with no obstacles around.

Dealers cannot reproduce the fault across multiple service visits, even when owners demonstrate the issue in test drives. Responses include computer resets, laser/radar system reprogramming, and advice to clean the grill sensor. One owner disabled the AEB entirely after 45 days of ownership.

Separately, some owners report stiff brake pedals on first start that prevent push-button engagement and clicking noises from the brake when tapping the pedal after shutdown—issues that resolve once the vehicle is running but recur on cold start. An ABS malfunction light also appeared during one incident with vehicle hesitation on a night drive.

The pattern spans the 2019 model year from early 2020 through 2021, with no recalls or service bulletins cited to address the problem.

Failure modes owners describe

Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system nuisance activation

AEB engages without detected obstacles—clear roads, no vehicles ahead or nearby, in parking garages, during backing, in various weather and lighting conditions. Owners report the system activating at highway speeds, parking ramps, reverse, and slow speeds, creating rear-end collision risk and alarm.

When: Reported from 2019 model year onward; occurrences span January 2020 through September 2021 at varying mileages (17,300 to 27,700+ miles) and across first year of ownership.

Symptoms owners cite: AEB brakes engage with no vehicle detected ahead; No visual or audible warning before activation in some cases; Grinding sound and chiming alarm during activation; System activates while parking, backing up, or on clear roadways; Activation on highway at 40 mph with no obstacles; Activation on parking garage ramps; Activation during winter snow, rain, and clear dry conditions

Codes mentioned: C1A16-97, B2724-23, P0304

Repairs/costs cited: Dealers report inability to duplicate issue; sonar control unit replacement (ordered and installed 03/04/20 in one case) did not resolve problem. Laser/radar system reprogram (RX6FAA reprogramming) performed after diagnostic attempts. Software updates applied; MAF sensor replaced in one case. One owner disabled AEB system after repeated false activations.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No recalls or service bulletins cited by owners to address the issue. Dealers unable to reproduce the malfunction in most service visits. One owner noted 2017–2018 models under investigation but 2019 models not yet included.

Stiff brake pedal and hard-start condition

Brake pedal becomes stiff and difficult or impossible to depress on first engine start, preventing vehicle start via push-button. Clicking noise audible when tapping the brake after engine shutdown.

When: First start of day; does not persist after initial start. Reported at least twice within two-week service intervals.

Symptoms owners cite: Brake pedal stiff and unable to be depressed on cold/overnight start; Clicking noise from brake when tapping pedal after shutdown; Push-button start fails when brake cannot be depressed; Issue resolves once vehicle starts and is driven

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle in service for four days on second occasion within two weeks; no repair outcome specified.

ABS malfunction warning with hesitation

ABS malfunction light illuminates while driving; vehicle hesitates as if braking. Forward collision warning also triggered. Dealership reset computer and advised cleaning of grill sensor.

When: August 15, 2020, while driving on city street at night.

Symptoms owners cite: ABS malfunction warning light on dashboard; Vehicle hesitation during normal driving; Dashboard lights remain illuminated after incident

Codes mentioned: C1A16-97

Repairs/costs cited: Dealership reset computer; advised to keep grill sensor clear of debris and bugs.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealership diagnosis: forward collision malfunction warning.

Purchased 11.23.2019. On 11.26.19 as I was starting to go up a steep ramp into the parking garage at work, the car suddenly stopped. I was being trailed by a Mercedes that could have rear ended me. 11.30.19 I took the car to another Nissan dealership to have it checked out. It checked out fine. There were no recalls or service bulletins to address this problem. I found where the 2017-2018s…

While attempting to back out of my garage the rear automatic emergency braking engaged. There is no reason it should have engaged, it was dark out but nothing was around. Common questions

How serious is the brakes problem on the 2019 Nissan Rogue Sport?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 16 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $450 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the brakes typically fail?

Across the 10 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most brakes failures cluster between 5,400 and 13,307 miles, with the median around 8,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 5,400; a quarter make it past 13,307. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $450 for brakes repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to brakes?

No active recalls currently cover brakes issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
