Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering steering on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin T-SB-0120-20 Rev Mar 2023

TSB: Some 2021 ? 2023 model year Toyota vehicles may require the download and installation of vehicle specific software or configuration software when the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) is replaced. Techstream software has been modified to indicate when configuration software is required. A new Configure column has been added to the Techstream Health Check Results screen to show when configuration software is available for a specific ECU. Follow the Operation Procedure in this bulletin to complete the ECU Software Configure Process.

My 2022 had a new crate engine put in at 26,000 miles in approx June 2025 (told me it would be 2 days but in less than 24hrs the service advisor called and told me it was completed) and from the second I picked up my truck and started it at the dealership, I heard a loud, fast ticking noisy sound coming from under the hood so I popped my hood and it sounded like a diesel engine and as I started…

Common questions

How serious is the steering problem on the 2022 Toyota Tundra?

It's a meaningful issue. 8 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $700.

At what mileage does the steering typically fail?

Mileage data is limited for this issue. Owners report failures across a wide range, suggesting cause is more about driving conditions and maintenance than mileage alone.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $700 for steering repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to steering?

No active recalls currently cover steering issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
