severe NHTSA 25V019000 January 17, 2025

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Bronco Sport and 2022-2023 Maverick vehicles

Battery failure can result in a loss of electrical accessories, including the hazard lights, or cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and if necessary, replace the 12-volt battery, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 2, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S02. Vehicles in this recall were previously repaired under 24V-267 and will need to have the new remedy completed.

The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: 2023 Bronco Sport owners report a wide range of electrical and electronic system failures, including critical safety issues like unintended reverse engagement that caused serious injury, sudden loss of power while driving, and stuck-in-park transmission failures. Common secondary issues involve infotainment blackouts and extreme audio distortion, with multiple failed repairs and recalls not resolving problems.

Owners describe a troubling pattern of electrical and electronic failures across 23 separate incidents. The most severe case involved unintended reverse gear engagement that caused the vehicle to drive uncontrolled for 35-40 feet, injuring the driver and a bystander. Another critical issue is sudden loss of engine power while driving—at highway merge speeds, in traffic intersections, and during normal acceleration—often with 'Charging System Needs Service' warnings. One owner found the vehicle completely immobilized and stuck in Park without warning at 13,000 miles.

Infotainment system failures are widespread: screens go black while driving, freeze on reverse camera images, and become unresponsive. Several owners report this began immediately after routine dealership service. Bluetooth constantly disconnects, and the center display sometimes fails to boot at all, leaving owners unable to access any system messages.

A recurring and concerning defect involves extremely loud digital distortion, crackling, or boom sounds emanating from the speaker system during startup or shutdown—some owners describe it as a gunshot-like explosion that causes ear pain and ringing loud enough to raise hearing damage concerns. Dealerships cannot replicate it, find no codes, and offer no repair. Ford released a software update for the F-150 but has not applied it to the Bronco Sport.

Additional electrical problems include keyless start functioning without the physical key present, battery drain forcing 'system sleep' mode that disables remote app functions, and repeated stalling at traffic lights. Multiple owners report these issues persist or recur even after manufacturer recalls and dealership repairs.

Failure modes owners describe

Loud audio distortion/boom on startup or shutdown

Extremely loud digital feedback, crackling, or boom sound emitting from the speaker system during vehicle startup or shutdown, sometimes accompanied by a high-pitched screeching or explosion-like noise. Sound is often too loud to control with volume knob and can persist even after engine shutdown. Multiple owners report the noise is so intense it causes ear pain, ringing, and concern for hearing damage.

When: At startup or shutdown; one case at 17,000 miles; occurs randomly without predictable trigger

Symptoms owners cite: Loud crackling or digital feedback through speakers; Boom or screeching noise resembling gunshot or explosion; Sound continues after ignition off; Volume control unresponsive during event; Ear pain and ringing reported; Smell of smoke reported in one case

Repairs/costs cited: Dealerships unable to replicate the sound during service visits; no fault codes displayed; Ford has released software update for F-150 but not applied to Bronco Sport; one owner told nothing can be done since fix is for F-150 only

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Software update available for F-150 but not yet released for 2023 Bronco Sport

Infotainment screen blackout and display malfunction

Dashboard and infotainment center screen goes completely black or fails to boot properly, leaving owner unable to access radio, climate controls, navigation, or system status messages. Screen may freeze on reverse camera image and not respond to inputs. Bluetooth connectivity issues also reported alongside screen failures.

When: Multiple instances; one case at 4,100 miles; occurs while driving and during startup

Symptoms owners cite: Center display/infotainment screen goes black; Screen fails to boot up properly; Reverse camera image freezes on screen; Radio/power button becomes unresponsive; Bluetooth disconnects all devices when vehicle is turned off; Screen resets every time vehicle is turned off; Unable to see speed or system messages

Repairs/costs cited: One owner reports issue began after routine oil change/service; one dealership service director acknowledged vehicle is 'known for its electronic issues'; issues persist after multiple service attempts

Loss of power and charging system warning

Vehicle suddenly loses engine power while driving at highway speeds or during acceleration, often with 'Charging System Needs Service' and 'Shut the Vehicle Off' warning messages displayed. One case involved loss of power in heavy traffic intersection resulting in vehicle stall and lock-in; another involved inability to accelerate on highway merge. Charging system diagnosed as not charging fully.

When: While driving at 55 MPH, 5 MPH, and heavy traffic; mileage 4,100 to 34,000 miles; one case occurred after May recall for loss of power was performed

Symptoms owners cite: Sudden loss of engine power while driving; Vehicle stalls in intersection or on roadway; Charging system not functioning (vehicle not charging as intended); Wrench light and loss of power alert in Ford app; Vehicle fails to accelerate when pedal depressed; All doors lock when power lost; Intermittent power loss in traffic

Codes mentioned: Turbo codes (reported by one owner)

Repairs/costs cited: Dealerships unable to locate cause of failure in several cases; fuel system failure suspected in one case but not confirmed after 3 weeks in shop; owner requested recall be redone but was declined; owner notes recall for loss of power was already performed in May but issue recurred

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Recall issued for loss of power (performed May 2024 in one case); manufacturer has referred owners to NHTSA Hotline; one case transferred to NHTSA by manufacturer

Transmission shift-to-Park failure / stuck in Park

Shift-by-wire system engages Park and becomes stuck, preventing vehicle from being shifted out of Park. Vehicle becomes completely immobilized with no warning. Multiple error messages appear after failure including Park Brake Fault and Pre-Collision Assist warnings.

When: Without warning; vehicle had fewer than 13,000 miles at time of failure

Symptoms owners cite: Uncommanded shift into Park while driving; Vehicle locked in Park and immobilized; Loss of essential vehicle control functions; Park Brake Fault error message; Pre-Collision Assist Not Available error message

Repairs/costs cited: Ford Service Center (Tijuana, BC) performed warranty repairs to restore functionality; vehicle had been serviced at authorized Ford dealership in US less than one month prior

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Warranty repair performed by Ford Service Center; manufacturer notified of incident

Vehicle stalling at stop light with Auto Stop-Start enabled

Vehicle stalls intermittently at traffic stops when automatic stop-start feature is active. In one documented case, vehicle shut off immediately after releasing brake pedal while stopped at red light.

When: At traffic stops with Auto Stop-Start activated; mileage at 34,000 miles (one case)

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle stalls at stop light; Engine shuts off immediately after releasing brake pedal; Failure occurs on several occasions

Repairs/costs cited: Multiple local dealers unable to determine cause

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer notified of failure

Unintended reverse gear engagement and vehicle uncontrolled motion

Vehicle suddenly engaged reverse gear without operator input and drove in reverse uncontrolled for 35-40 feet, resulting in serious injury to driver and bystander. Event occurred while owner was opening liftgate with automatic alarm active.

When: While liftgate was open and alarm was active

Symptoms owners cite: Alarm activated when liftgate opened; Vehicle suddenly went into reverse without driver input; Vehicle continued in reverse motion uncontrollably for 35-40 feet; All doors appeared locked or difficult to open

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle caused serious injury—owner pinned under vehicle, sustaining crush injuries to lower leg, both knees, and right thigh; bystander's foot run over

Keyless start system operates without physical key present

Vehicle started and driven for 15 miles without physical key in vehicle or on person. Key was left inside house during drive. Once vehicle was shut off, it would not restart and displayed 'no key detected' message, stranding owner.

When: Unknown mileage; occurred during drive in driveway

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle started without key present; Vehicle drove 15 miles without key in vehicle; Auto start-stop feature engaged; Vehicle would not restart after being shut off without key present; No key detected error message displayed

Battery drain and system sleep mode preventing app start function

I went to start my 2023 Ford Bronco badlands edition. Upon ignition a loud bang comes from the speakers. It sounded like a gun went off inside the vehicle. My ears were ringing. Then a loud crackling sound could be heard continuously without going away. I tried to shut off the volume, but the knob didn’t work. I shut down the vehicle and the sound of the crackling still persisted.

I had the recall done that was suppose to fix the battery signaling the vehicle to shut off, but after I had it done I still got the message to either turn off the accessory power or to restart the engine.

The dashboard and screen when black while I was driving down the highway. I was unable yo see my speed. I found a safe spot to pull the car over to see what was going on and the car would not start again. After jumping the car it still would not start then it had to be towed to ford where they still can’t figure out was wrong.

In September my dad was driving my car in eco mode and the wrench light came on. I got an alert in my ford app that there was a transmission problem and lack of power issue. My dad and husband were in CO at the time with my car. They took it to a dealership and the light had gone off they said it was pulling turbo codes. They drove it back to AR and I took it in the shop and they said nothing was…

I was able to start my vehicle in my driveway, without the key. Unknown to me at the time, the key was in fact in my house, in my bedroom, not in my purse, or on my body. But I was able to drive 15 miles without that key. Fortunately the automatic start/stop was engaged, if it hadn't been I could've been stranded at an intersection or worse, had an accident stalled at an intersection. Once the…

This is the first episode of this event. I have been driving the vehicle for 17,000 miles. It was raining outside. When I pressed the button to start the ignition a horrifically loud screeching noise that terminated in what sounded like an explosion seemed to come from the passenger side if the vehicle. It last only a few seconds but it created a piercing sensation in my ears and left my ear was…
