Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Tundra and Tundra Hybrid vehicles

A blank display will not show critical information such as the speedometer or warning lights, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the combination meter ECU software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 17, 2023. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TA02.

The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: 2023 Tundra owners report serious electrical fires, engine seizures from manufacturing debris, infotainment blackouts, fuel gauge failures that risk running out of gas, and repeated recall delays with unavailable parts. Multiple catastrophic failures have occurred early in vehicle life, with manufacturers declining assistance on fire-damaged vehicles.

Owners report catastrophic electrical fires in the engine bay originating from the fuse/relay box during normal operation, with one truck burning completely just 300 meters after a dealership service. A separate owner experienced sudden complete loss of oil pressure at 34,500 miles with metal shavings found throughout the oil system—matching a known recall for machining debris left in engines during manufacturing. Another owner faced the same machining debris issue with engine stalls and rough running on busy roads.

Beyond catastrophic failures, owners describe systemic electrical gremlins: the 14-inch infotainment screen goes completely dark and unresponsive, disabling critical safety features like lane departure warnings and speedometer displays. Fuel gauges malfunction repeatedly, randomly resetting to full despite partial tanks, creating risk of fuel starvation. Tailgates open unexpectedly while driving at highway speed. Cameras fail during rain. Door locks jam. The rearview mirror malfunctions. One owner's garage door opens during system updates while the truck sits parked inside.

Owners also report throttle hesitation during critical maneuvers like highway merging, and one hybrid owner documents inadequate power in limp mode when towing 15,000+ pounds on mountain grades. Multiple safety recalls have been issued but parts remain unavailable months or over a year later, leaving known defects unrepaired. Interior trim installed with double-sided tape fails within months and is not warranty-covered. Early failures occurred as low as 500 miles and within three months of purchase.
