Pull the NHTSA owner-complaint record for the 2010–2017 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain and the engine-category pile is hard to miss: 2,384 complaints across the two nameplates, twelve separate model-years each clearing at least fifty documented mileage reports, and a failure window that keeps landing in the same 80,000–to–100,000-mile band no matter which badge is on the hood. That consistency is the story. Two GM divisions, one shared platform, one engine — and one problem.
GM's compact-crossover twins rode on the same Theta platform and, for the entire run charted here, shared a standard 2.4-liter Ecotec four-cylinder. (A 3.6-liter V6 was optional on both through the 2013 model year, and later engine revisions changed some internals — see the caveat below.) Ask an independent shop what that engine is known for and the answer comes fast: it burns oil, and it does it quietly enough that a lot of owners don't notice until the low-oil light comes on or the noise starts.
Where the oil goes
Every gasoline engine burns a trace of oil past the piston rings — that's normal wear. What owners describe on the 2.4 Ecotec is not trace consumption. It's a dipstick that reads full at an oil change and reads low a thousand miles later, with no puddle in the driveway and no visible leak anywhere in the engine bay. The oil isn't leaking out from underneath the car. It's being pulled past the rings into the combustion chamber and burned out the tailpipe, a few thousandths of an inch at a time, on every single mile driven.
Left unchecked, that's not just an inconvenience. An engine that's low on oil runs hotter, wears faster, and eventually knocks — a rod bearing spinning on an oil film that's thinner than it should be. Owners who caught it early describe adding a quart every thousand to fifteen hundred miles as routine maintenance. Owners who didn't catch it describe a check-engine light, a knock, and a shop estimate for a full engine replacement.
The second symptom: a rattle at cold start
The oil-consumption complaint is the one that shows up first in the NHTSA record, but a second failure rides along with it on the same engine: a timing chain that stretches and a set of guides that wear faster than the chain does. The tell is a rattle for the first second or two after a cold start — the chain slapping against its guides before oil pressure builds and takes the slack out. It's the kind of noise that's easy to dismiss the first few times. Left alone, the guides wear through, the chain gets sloppy enough to skip a tooth, and the timing goes off enough to bend a valve or throw a P0016/P0017 timing-correlation code.
Neither failure announces itself with a warning light early. Both reward a driver who's paying attention to the dipstick and the first cold start of the day, and both punish one who isn't.
Enough complaints to move GM
The oil-consumption pattern on these engines became well known enough, on enough vehicles, that GM extended engine coverage for many owners outside the original factory warranty and faced a class-action lawsuit over it. That's a different kind of response than a recall — it's a warranty and litigation story, not a safety-defect one — and we're not asserting a recall exists or doesn't exist for this engine in this piece; that's a claim that needs its own live verification, and we'd rather leave it out than get it wrong. What the NHTSA numbers show cleanly, on their own, is 2,384 owner-filed engine complaints, 24 of them noting a fire allegation, 6 a crash, and 10 an injury — on an engine that millions of ordinary commuter-crossover buyers never expected to hear from before 100,000 miles.
The mileage window
Across every charted model-year, the median engine complaint lands between 80,000 and 100,000 miles — past the 60,000-mile powertrain warranty on nearly every one of these vehicles, and past the point where most first owners have traded it in. The 2013 Equinox, the single largest cluster in the record at 320 complaints, sits almost dead center at a 95,000-mile median. That's exactly the odometer reading on a lot of these crossovers sitting on a used-car lot right now.
What to do if you own one, or are about to
Check the oil level monthly, not just at the change interval. On this engine, "the oil light hasn't come on" is not the same as "the oil level is fine." A dipstick check between changes is the cheapest diagnostic tool you have.
Listen for a rattle in the first two seconds after a cold start. That's the timing chain announcing itself before oil pressure catches up. It gets worse, not better, and it's far cheaper to replace a chain and guides than to fix what happens after one skips a tooth.
If you're shopping one, ask for oil-consumption history. A seller who's been topping off between changes usually knows it. Get the service records, and if the car is past 80,000 miles, budget for the possibility that the engine has already started down this path.
How we did it
Source. NHTSA engine-category owner-complaint counts and median failure mileage for the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain, model years 2010–2017, from our copy of the public NHTSA complaint database (re-validated against the current snapshot on August 6, 2026). The twelve charted model-years each carry at least 50 documented mileage reports; four additional model-years (2017 Equinox, 2015–2017 Terrain) fell below that threshold and are folded into the family total but not individually charted or quoted for mileage.
Caveat. NHTSA files complaints by model, not by engine, and a 3.6-liter V6 was optional on both the Equinox and Terrain through the 2013 model year — so these are model-level engine complaints, not an engine-isolated tally. The 2.4-liter Ecotec was the standard, high-volume engine across every charted year, and the oil-consumption and timing-chain pattern described here is the dominant documented engine complaint on these vehicles, but the raw counts include some complaints from other engine issues too. Complaint counts also reflect how often owners file, not a measured failure rate, and are unverified consumer reports. We did not make any recall claim, in either direction, in this piece — that requires live verification against NHTSA's recalls API, which we didn't run for this cycle, and we'd rather publish without the claim than risk publishing a wrong one.
