Volkswagen builds an engine once and puts it everywhere. For most of the 2010s, the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four — badged 2.0T on the VW side, 2.0 TFSI on the Audi side, and known to techs by its internal name, the EA888 — ran the Jetta, the GTI, the Passat, the Tiguan, and Audi's A4, A3 and Q5. Owners of the 2008–2019 cars filed 1,679 engine complaints with NHTSA. That volume, and a matching enough symptom set across two brands, is what eventually put Volkswagen and Audi on the losing end of a class-action lawsuit.
The part at the center of it is the timing chain tensioner — the piece that keeps constant pressure on the chain connecting the crankshaft to the camshafts. Most owners assume a timing chain, unlike a rubber timing belt, is a lifetime part. On this engine it isn't, because the tensioner and guides that manage it wear faster than the chain does. As the tensioner degrades, the chain develops slack. A slack chain skips teeth on the sprockets, throws valve timing out of sync, and in the worst reported cases lets a valve meet a piston. It doesn't usually fail without warning — a metallic rattle on cold start, then a check-engine light for a cam-timing fault code, then, if it's ignored, a dead engine.
What the failure feels like
Owners describe a progression, and the early part of it is cheap to catch. It starts as a rattle or chatter on cold start — a metallic noise for the first few seconds after startup that fades once oil pressure builds, easy to write off as normal turbo-four clatter until it isn't. Then a check-engine light, often for a camshaft-position or cam-timing correlation code, as the stretched chain throws valve timing out of spec. Then rough idle, hesitation, or a loss of power as the engine compensates. Left alone, the chain can jump time entirely or a guide can shatter, and on an interference engine like this one that means bent valves at best and a wrecked bottom end at worst — a replace-the-engine repair, not a rebuild-a-part repair.
The problem crossed two brands and four nameplates
Look at the chart and notice what it isn't: one unlucky model. The complaints run across the Jetta, the Tiguan, the Passat, and the Audi A4 — a compact sedan, a compact crossover, a midsize sedan, and a Volkswagen Group vehicle sold under an entirely different brand. Those cars share almost nothing on the outside. What they share is the engine bay. That's the signature of a part-level defect rather than a model-level one: when the same failure rides across two brands and four body styles that otherwise have nothing in common, the part is the story, not the car.
The 2010 Jetta led the pack, and failed early
The 2010 Jetta carries the largest cluster in this data set — 131 engine complaints across a sample of 117 mileage-tagged reports — and its reported failures land early: a median of 40,000 miles, with a quarter of them showing up by roughly 15,000 miles. The 2009 Jetta is close behind at 120 complaints with a similar shape. For a car most owners expect to still be under at least some factory coverage, a defect cluster with a first quartile in the teens of thousands of miles is the kind of thing that shows up on a used lot with the original owner's paperwork still in the glovebox.
The mileage window on the rest
Move past the two worst Jetta years and the window widens. Across the ten charted model-years, the sample-weighted average median failure lands around 59,000 miles — but the spread is real: the Jetta clusters between 40,000 and 61,000 miles, while the Tiguan and the Audi A4 push out to 81,000–92,000 miles. That's a wide enough range that a used-car shopper needs the specific model-year, not just "it's the 2.0T," to know where they stand. A 2009 Tiguan or 2010 A4 near 85,000 miles is sitting close to the point where this data set's complaints cluster.
What to do if you own one, or are about to
Take a cold-start rattle seriously. That few-second metallic chatter on startup is the earliest and cheapest-to-catch sign. A tensioner replaced before the chain stretches is a moderate repair bill; an engine rebuilt after a jumped chain is a different conversation entirely.
Ask about the timing chain specifically when you shop one. Volkswagen and Audi settled a class-action lawsuit over this tensioner design and extended warranty coverage for the repair on some model-years — ask the seller or a dealer whether the specific VIN you're looking at was ever covered, and whether the tensioner or chain has already been replaced. A car that's already had the fix is a safer buy than one that hasn't.
Don't skip the oil interval. Oil that's run long or low accelerates tensioner wear on this engine family. If you own one and don't know the maintenance history, an oil and filter change is the cheapest insurance you can buy against this specific failure.
How we did it
Source. NHTSA engine-category owner-complaint counts and median failure mileage for 2.0T-equipped Volkswagen and Audi vehicles, from our copy of the public NHTSA complaint database (re-validated against the current snapshot on July 23, 2026). Across the Jetta, GTI, Passat, Tiguan, Audi A4, A3 and Q5, the 2008–2019 lineup carries 1,679 engine complaints; the ten charted model-years account for 683 of them. The Jetta figures cover both the sedan and Wolfsburg/GLI-adjacent trims filed under the same model name.
Caveat. NHTSA files complaints by model, not by engine, so these counts are model-level, not tensioner-isolated. Several of these models also sold with other engines in the same years — base Jettas and Passats offered a 2.5-liter five-cylinder alongside the 2.0T, and the Audi A4 offered a 3.2-liter V6 into 2009 — so a share of each model-year's engine complaints may belong to a different engine, not this one. The Tiguan and GTI, by contrast, sold with the 2.0T as their only gas engine for the years shown, which is why we lead the chart with the Jetta's volume but anchor the pattern's cross-model reach on those two. Complaint counts reflect how often owners file, not a failure rate, and are unverified consumer reports. We make no NHTSA recall claim here: Volkswagen and Audi did settle a class-action lawsuit over this tensioner design and extended warranty coverage for some model-years, which is a matter of public court record, not an NHTSA safety recall — the two are different things, and we haven't verified recall status against the live NHTSA API for this piece.
