What stands out

No new NHTSA engine complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 4 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.

The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: The 2012 Cadillac SRX has documented owner reports of engine stalling without codes, catastrophic timing chain and sludge-related failures at low mileage despite proper maintenance, and detonation problems on regular fuel—multiple issues that dealers cannot reliably diagnose or GM has not recalled despite acknowledging them.

Owners report the 3.6-liter engine in 2012 SRX models exhibiting multiple serious faults. Five separate complaints describe loss of power or complete stalling while driving at highway speeds (40–65 mph) with no warning codes or check-engine lights; dealers cannot duplicate these incidents or find stored faults. In two cases, the engine simply fails catastrophically—one with a hole in the block at 8,600 miles, another locked up at 127,000 miles with no oil in the pan seven weeks after service.

Several owners report engine seizure from internal sludge at relatively low mileage (61,000 miles) despite documented on-time oil changes. Timing chain failure is cited in one complaint at 52,000 miles, just outside warranty; owner states this is a widespread, recalled issue on other SRX years. One owner encountered continuous engine detonation on regular fuel in warm weather; GM acknowledged this as a software limitation in the knock-sensor timing retard logic and promised a software update within one year. A timing cover gasket leak is noted as a service advisor–confirmed known issue, though not recalled for 2012 models.

A keyless entry system also failed intermittently in one account. Across all narratives, owners struggled to get warranty coverage or recalls despite identifying their problems as common online.

Failure modes owners describe

Loss of power / stalling with no codes

Engine loses power or stalls without triggering diagnostic codes; restarts without issue and dealers cannot duplicate or identify the root cause.

When: One case at 2 months post-purchase (65 mph on interstate); repeat instance early 2014. Another case at 40 mph with illuminated check engine light.

Symptoms owners cite: Complete loss of power; Engine stall without warning; No diagnostic codes stored; Vehicle restarts normally; Unable to accelerate

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No technical service bulletins issued to dealers; manufacturer made aware in at least one case; no recall issued.

Timing cover gasket leak

Timing cover gasket develops leak; owner reports service advisor indicated this is a known issue with SRX models, though 2012 not included in any visible recall.

When: Identified during recall service visit at 87,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Timing cover gasket leak (no visual evidence of external leaking reported by owner)

Repairs/costs cited: Repair quote $2,134.53

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Known issue per service advisor; not recalled for 2012 model year despite being common across SRX lineup.

Engine detonation / pre-ignition on regular fuel

3.6-liter engine detonates continuously when 87 or 89 octane fuel is used in warm ambient temperatures. Owner states knock sensors detect pinging but engine control software cannot retard timing sufficiently to prevent damage. GM acknowledged software limitation and stated a software update was in development.

When: Occurs when outside air temperature is 70°F or above

Symptoms owners cite: Continuous detonation / pinging; Knock sensor activity detected; Engine detonation on lower octane fuel; Inadequate timing retard from ECU

Repairs/costs cited: GM has replaced entire engines in some cases to attempt resolution; issue is software-related, not hardware.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM acknowledged as software issue; claimed software update in development for 2012, 2013, and current SRX crossovers (timeframe stated as 'one year' from complaint date).

Timing chain failure

Timing chain requires replacement well before expected service life; occurs at low mileage and owner found numerous online reports and recalls for the same problem on SRX models, indicating a design or manufacturing defect.

When: At 52,000 miles, 3 weeks beyond factory 5-year warranty expiration

Symptoms owners cite: Timing chain failure requiring repair

Repairs/costs cited: $2,100 repair cost; owner responsible despite warranty records and evidence of proper maintenance.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Cadillac warranty department denied coverage; owner notes numerous online posts and some recalls for this exact issue on SRX vehicles, suggesting known defect.

Engine sludge and seizure

Engine seizes without warning or dash indicator despite adequate oil level and on-time oil changes. Inspection reveals internal sludge buildup causing engine lock-up. Owner states this is a common problem online.

When: At 61,000 miles; sludge present despite all oil changes completed on schedule

Symptoms owners cite: Engine sputter then shutdown; Engine seized; Internal sludge accumulation; No warning codes or dash indicator

Repairs/costs cited: $10,000 replacement cost (owner estimate); extended warranty refused coverage citing sludge as exclusion.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No recall issued despite owner stating this is commonly reported online as a design problem.

Remote keyless entry system failure

Vehicle cannot recognize remote key fob after brief parking period; dealer suspected frequency interference but was unable to diagnose root cause. Issue recurred two weeks later but resolved after waiting 2 minutes.

When: After 20-minute parking period; recurred 2 weeks later

Symptoms owners cite: Remote key not recognized by vehicle; Start button system failure to authenticate fob; Intermittent recurrence; Resolves spontaneously after brief waiting period

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealer could not identify cause; suggested frequency interference based on parking location.

Engine failure at high mileage

Engine failed without warning during highway driving; hole discovered in engine block requiring engine replacement.

When: At 8,600 miles (very early failure)

Symptoms owners cite: Complete engine failure without warning; Hole in engine motor

Repairs/costs cited: Engine and motor replaced

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer not made aware of failure

Engine lockup without oil loss warning

Engine locked up and quit while driving at highway speed after proper oil change 7 weeks prior. Upon inspection, no oil found in crankcase despite oil change interval compliance.

When: At 127,000 miles, 7 weeks after oil change service

Symptoms owners cite: Engine stall at 40 mph without warning; No oil in crankcase despite recent service; Complete engine lockup

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle repaired (oil service implied)

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer was made aware of failure

UNKNOWN- Took my vehicle in for the recall listed above, to then be told that my Timing Cover Gasket: timing cover gasket leaking. Service advisor indicated that this is a known issue with SRX's. I did search for a recall on all years, but not on the 2012's. Not sure why they were not included. I was informed at the price of $2134.53 it could be repaired. I only have 87 plus miles on this…

Common questions

How serious is the engine problem on the 2012 Cadillac SRX?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 10 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $3,100 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the engine typically fail?

Across the 8 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most engine failures cluster between 12,000 and 127,000 miles, with the median around 58,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 12,000; a quarter make it past 127,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $3,100 for engine repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to engine?

No active recalls currently cover engine issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
