Stories from the shop

I run a moving fleet, so I’ll say this from the operator’s chair. The 2016 Transit Connect’s complaint volume looks low — and that low number is itself the lesson.

Why the data looks clean and isn’t

Fleets eat transmission failures quietly. Warranty or out of pocket, the van gets fixed or replaced and almost nobody files a federal complaint. So the newer Transit Connects can show single-digit NHTSA complaint counts while operators are replacing transmissions by the dozen. This is the exact blind spot we describe in where the failures cluster: a transmission can be genuinely bad and not on our list simply because it’s too new to have accumulated the paper trail.

The 8F35 (the eight-speed that replaced the older 6F35) is following that path. Fleet experience runs roughly: 8F35s averaging ~120k miles before replacement, with the older 6F35 being closer to a coin-flip at 200k. The “upgrade” got worse — harsher shift strategy, more heat, thinner margins. By the time the data “proves” it, it’ll be a decade-old known problem, exactly like the 6F35 was.

What to watch

  • Harsh, clunky, or hunting shifts; shudder under light throttle
  • Service history showing a transmission already replaced (on these, that can be a good sign — newer unit)
  • How it was used and maintained — fleet service records beat low mileage

Should you buy one?

Buyable as a cheap, practical small work van — but go in clear-eyed. The transmission is the risk and the federal data won’t reassure you because it can’t see this yet. Favor one with documented transmission service or a prior replacement, test-drive the shifts hard, and price in the possibility. On a commercial vehicle where downtime costs money, running the warranty math is genuinely worth it here — this is the kind of case where coverage can pencil out.

Math is straightforward: a quality service contract runs $1,800–3,500 over 3 years. With 103 complaints on file and the costliest repair averaging $350, one major failure more than pays for it. The catch is reading the contract — many providers exclude wear items and require pre-authorization, so cheaper plans are not always better value.
