What stands out

Owners have filed 48 electrical complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

No new NHTSA electrical complaint has been filed on this vehicle in over 5 years — the issue may be aging out of the active population.

The failure pattern owners describe

Buyer takeaway: The 2016 Grand Cherokee has widespread electrical and software issues that create genuine safety risks: transmission engagement failures and stalling at stop lights, spontaneous engine shutdowns on highways, key fob detection failures, and reported electrical fires. Dealers struggle to diagnose root causes, and recalls have seen parts shortages and conflicting repair information.

Owners of 2016 Grand Cherokee models describe a pattern of electrical and electronic failures that affect core driving safety. Transmission engagement regularly fails—the vehicle locks in Park or Neutral at stop lights, forcing drivers to shift and restart. Engine stalling happens without warning on highways at 60+ mph and in city traffic, with some owners reporting 15+ incidents in a single year. Multiple cases note the vehicle stalls and then becomes impossible to restart without a full power cycle.

The infotainment system (Uconnect 8.4) voice control has a near-total failure rate with iPhones, contradicting the brochure's safety claims about hands-free operation. Dashboard and instrument cluster go completely blank or display erratic readings. Headlights flicker every few minutes during night driving. Battery and charging-system failures recur even after replacement; one owner replaced the battery three times without solving the stalling.

Most concerning: two owners report electrical fires. One fire started in the rear passenger seat; another involves a water leak in the cargo area near wiring. Owners also report sudden loss of braking, inability to shut off the vehicle after an accident, and a key fob system that won't recognize the fob or allow mechanical key override. Dealership diagnostics are often inconclusive, and recalls (transmission interlock solenoid, fuel pump) have faced parts delays and conflicting service information.

When I push on the gas pedal, sometimes the car revs up and the speed does not increase. I have to shut the car down and then restart. When I restart it, then it resets it in a way and I am able to drive. There is a hyperbola symbol that is seen on my dashboard that blinks when this happens. Please help.

electrical · 40,000 mi · filed 12/14/2018

I have a brand new lease and my alternator has to be replaced. The battery is not being charged, the dome lights and headlights dim intermittently while driving or parked. The car has also stopped while driving in the middle of traffic and magically took off after a few seconds while I was making a left turn unto the freeway in the middle of a major intersection.
