What stands out

Electrical accounts for 32% of every owner complaint on file for this vehicle — the dominant problem area across 7 categories tracked.

Owners have filed 26 electrical complaints with NHTSA against this vehicle, but no formal recall covers the issue — the federal record reflects what manufacturers have admitted, not everything owners are reporting.

Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering electrical on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

The UConnect touchscreen delamination dominates complaints across this cluster. The LCD separates from its backing, warping the glass and triggering phantom touches that change radio stations, redirect navigation to random destinations, dial random contacts, adjust climate settings, and blast unexpected loud beeps—all while driving. Owners report streaking, peeling, and discoloration on the screen. One owner had the screen replaced in 2018 only to experience identical failure later. Dealerships offer software updates (with no guarantee they won't disable the entire system) or full screen replacement, yet recurrence happens. Backup camera function suffers too, displaying flickering, blank screens, or staying locked on even after driver shuts it off, creating dangerous visibility loss while reversing.

Beyond the touchscreen, owners report radio and headlight conflicts where the two cannot operate simultaneously, a passenger-side airbag that deployed on an interstate without impact, and battery drain traced to ECM module faults (diagnostic code P1DF3). One owner's instrument cluster powered itself on all night, draining the battery, requiring replacement—then failing again three weeks later. Multiple owners note this delamination issue appears endemic to 2017–2019 model year 300s and cite class-action lawsuits. The sporadic, unpredictable nature of these failures—combined with their distraction potential—consistently triggers safety concerns in narratives.

Failure modes owners describe

UConnect Touchscreen Delamination

The LCD/touchscreen in the center console separates internally or delaminates from the backing, causing the glass to warp and create phantom or ghost touches. Affected buttons register on their own without driver input, and the screen displays streaking, peeling, or discoloration. This is a widespread issue reported across 2017–2019 model year 300s according to owner observations.

When: Begins early in vehicle ownership; one owner reported replacement in 2018 followed by recurrence

Symptoms owners cite: Screen delamination, peeling, or separation from backing; Phantom/ghost touches activating buttons without input; Streaking or discoloration on screen display; Random radio station changes; Unintended climate control adjustments; Navigation starting to random destinations; Hands-free calls placed to random contacts; Screen flickering or switching between modes; Backup camera display issues (flickering, staying on, or blank); Constant loud beeping; Screen unable to be turned off

Repairs/costs cited: Dealership offers software updates or complete screen replacement; no guarantee update won't disable entire system. One owner had screen replaced in 2018 but same problem recurred.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: U05 recall mentioned by one owner; software update attempted without resolution

Passenger-Side Airbag Inadvertent Deployment

Airbag deployed without impact or collision while vehicle was being driven to a service appointment to address electrical concerns. Occurred on interstate with multiple passengers in vehicle.

When: September 16, 2023 during highway driving

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger-side airbag deployed without any impact; Loss of visibility during deployment; Airbag light activated on dashboard

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle inspected by Chrysler manufacturer representative (James Brozovich, Bosch Automotive Service Solutions) on 10/26/23; inspection details not disclosed

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Claim filed with Chrysler Corporate; vehicle at authorized dealer since 9/19/23; manufacturer has not provided resolution

Radio and Headlight Electrical Conflicts

Intermittent electrical malfunction where radio and headlights cannot operate simultaneously. When radio functions, headlights do not, and vice versa. Dashboard lights also affected.

When: Preceding airbag deployment incident

Symptoms owners cite: Radio blinking on and off; Headlights failing when radio operates; Radio and dashboard lights failing when headlights are on; Check engine light illumination

Battery Drain / ECM Module Battery Drain

Vehicle fails to start on multiple occasions. Dealer diagnostic code P1DF3 indicates ECM (engine control module) draining battery. Owner reports this is a known issue across multiple Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep products. One battery replacement did not resolve issue; ECM required flash and reset at dealership.

When: At approximately 110,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle will not start; Requires jump-start to operate

Codes mentioned: P1DF3

Repairs/costs cited: Battery replacement attempted; ECM flash and reset performed at dealership under warranty

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Known problem according to owner's research; would have required paid service without active warranty

Backup Camera Malfunction

Backup camera system fails to display properly or freezes on screen. Issues range from sporadic function to complete non-operation. Software updates and recalls have been attempted without permanent resolution.

When: One owner reports issue started day after purchase; another reports onset at approximately 50,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Backup camera not displaying image; Black screen when reversing; Screen flickering and flashing when in reverse; Camera display stays on or locks up; Screen brightness (bright blue) impairs visibility; Intermittent function; rarely works correctly

Repairs/costs cited: Software update attempted (did not resolve); U05 recall applied (did not resolve); subsequent dealership visits needed

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: U05 recall issued; software updates available through dealer

Instrument Cluster Electrical Drain

Instrument cluster panel drains battery when vehicle is off. Clusters have powered down and failed to restart. Dealer attempted to blame battery condition; owner found battery was drained by cluster remaining powered.

When: October 1, 2025 and October 22, 2025

Symptoms owners cite: Instrument cluster powers off without warning; Cluster fails to power back on; Battery drained overnight due to cluster remaining powered

Repairs/costs cited: Cluster replaced; second replacement required within three weeks

Common questions

How serious is the electrical problem on the 2017 Chrysler 300?

It's a documented issue but not catastrophic. 26 complaints have been filed. Repairs average $850 and most owners catch it before it causes a breakdown.

At what mileage does the electrical typically fail?

Based on the 26 complaints filed, electrical issues most often appear around 50,043 miles. Some report problems earlier; some make it well past 150,000 with no symptoms. Maintenance habits matter — vehicles that received timely fluid services and were not regularly overworked tend to last longer.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $850 for electrical repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to electrical?

No active recalls currently cover electrical issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
