Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering powertrain on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2017 Rogue Sport CVT shows a clear pattern of failures across multiple modes. Most common is sudden loss of forward motion—engine revs but the vehicle doesn't move, as though the transmission shifted to neutral. Owners report this happening at highway speeds, at traffic lights, and during merging, sometimes stranding them completely. Replacement cost runs $5,000–$5,600.

Hesitation and delayed acceleration is the second major complaint. RPMs shoot up without proportional speed gain, making merging and crossing intersections unsafe. This begins around 75,000 miles in some cases but occurs across the mileage spectrum.

Jerking and juddering occur throughout the power range, especially in low-speed maneuvering and turning. One owner found dark, smelly transmission fluid. Whirling or rubbing sounds accompany the jerking in some cases.

Intermittent unresponsiveness—where the transmission simply won't engage for a few seconds before resuming—happens randomly and cannot be reproduced by dealers or independent shops. No check engine lights accompany these events.

One owner experienced complete brake failure and unintended acceleration on the highway, resulting in a collision. Stalling without warning is also documented, sometimes at startup and sometimes while driving.

Owners cite service bulletins NTB18-077b and NTB20-069, and NHTSA Campaign 23V093000. Manufacturer responses have been inconsistent; some dealers claim no recall exists for the VIN, and coverage has been denied based on transmission manufacturing location.

Failure modes owners describe

CVT Transmission Loss of Power / No Forward Motion

Vehicle fails to move when in drive, loses motive power mid-drive, or engine revs without forward motion. Owners report being stranded or unable to accelerate when needed.

When: Between 23,500 and 168,000 miles; occurs at various speeds including highway and stop-light situations

Symptoms owners cite: No forward motion despite accelerator input; Engine revving without vehicle movement; Vehicle stuck as if in neutral; Complete loss of motive power; Inability to reverse

Codes mentioned: P17F0, P17F1, P0776

Repairs/costs cited: CVT transmission replacement required; costs cited: $5,000–$5,600; one owner reported manufacturer offered to pay half

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NTB18-077b (Service Bulletin); NHTSA Campaign 23V093000 (Electrical System); manufacturers have declined coverage citing geographic manufacturing limits; some owners report being told no recall exists

CVT Transmission Hesitation / Delayed Acceleration

Vehicle hesitates or fails to accelerate smoothly in response to pedal input. Engine revs without proportional speed increase. Occurs at low and highway speeds, making merging and crossing intersections unsafe.

When: Between 75,000 and 89,600 miles; some owners report onset around 75k miles

Symptoms owners cite: Delayed acceleration response; RPMs increase without speed increase; Hesitation when accelerating from stop; Insufficient power relative to pedal input; Difficulty merging into traffic or crossing intersections

CVT Transmission Jerking / Judder

Vehicle jerks or judders during operation, including after reset procedures and when turning at low speeds. Motion described as bouncing forward and backward. Dark, smelly transmission fluid found in one case.

When: Various speeds; low-speed maneuvering reported as most problematic

Symptoms owners cite: Jerking motion during driving; Bouncing forward and backward sensation; Juddering during acceleration; Jerking when brake pedal depressed; Whirling/rubbing sound while moving

Codes mentioned: P17F1

Repairs/costs cited: AWD coupler replacement estimated at $2,500 (labor and part); transmission fluid dark and smelly in at least one case

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NTB20-069 referenced by owner as similar defect; manufacturer response to coupler replacement not clearly documented in narrative

CVT Transmission Intermittent Unresponsiveness

Transmission randomly fails to respond to accelerator input for seconds at a time before resuming normal operation. Problem cannot be reproduced on demand and throws no diagnostic codes.

When: Occurs intermittently; one owner reports no weekly pattern

Symptoms owners cite: Transmission unresponsive to gas pedal input; Random failures lasting seconds; No check engine light or warning codes; Problem clears spontaneously after seconds

Repairs/costs cited: Cannot be diagnosed by dealer or independent shop; no repair documented

CVT Transmission Erroneous Neutral Shift

Transmission shifts into neutral without driver input while driving, causing sudden loss of acceleration and power.

When: One case at 56,000 miles; one case at 23,500 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Sudden shift to neutral while driving; Loss of acceleration capability; Engine revving while in neutral; Unable to merge into traffic; Warning light illuminated (unspecified)

Repairs/costs cited: One case: engine valves replaced but failure recurred; vehicle not repaired in another case

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer contacted in one case; no documented response

Vehicle Stalling Without Warning

Engine stalls unexpectedly at start-up and while driving at various speeds with no prior symptoms or warning lights.

When: Approximately 150,000 miles reported in one case; timing varies in others

Symptoms owners cite: Unexpected stall at startup; Stalling while driving at undisclosed speeds; No warning lights or prior symptoms

Repairs/costs cited: Code reader diagnostics performed with no results; vehicle not repaired

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealer and manufacturer notified; manufacturer stated no recall associated with VIN

Loss of Vehicle Control / Brake Failure

Vehicle jerks and surges in speed on highway; brakes become unresponsive and vehicle accelerates unintentionally, causing inability to control vehicle. Resulted in collision with retaining wall in one case.

When: Highway driving at unspecified speeds

Symptoms owners cite: Vehicle jerks up and down in speed; Brake does not respond; Unintended acceleration; Complete loss of vehicle control; Brake failure coinciding with acceleration

Repairs/costs cited: Not documented

Common questions

How serious is the powertrain problem on the 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport?

It's a meaningful issue. 23 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $2,500.

At what mileage does the powertrain typically fail?

Across the 8 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most powertrain failures cluster between 43,009 and 100,425 miles, with the median around 83,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 43,009; a quarter make it past 100,425. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $2,500 for powertrain repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to powertrain?

No active recalls currently cover powertrain issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
