The failure pattern owners describe

Owners report widespread electrical issues across the 2020 F-150 spread across infotainment, engine management, and vehicle safety systems. The Sync 3/APIM system is a consistent problem: radio presets won't stay saved, phones disconnect constantly, voice commands fail, and backup cameras black out or freeze. Many owners experienced these failures after February–March 2023 over-the-air updates; dealers have identified these as likely corrupt updates but Ford has not issued a fix after months of waiting. Camera systems also fail independently—backup cameras display distorted or black images, sometimes freezing on-screen while driving forward. Ford recalls 20C19 and 20B39 address this, but owners report parts on backorder for 3–6 months or longer, leaving vehicles unsafe to back up.

Engine shutdown while driving without warning codes is another critical concern. Multiple owners report the engine shutting off at low speeds with "Auto Start Stop Shift to P Then Restart Engine" messages, causing loss of power steering and braking. Dealers cannot reproduce it, and no recalls exist despite owners finding forums full of similar reports. Cruise control malfunctions—failing to disengage when brakes applied—have also caused near-accident situations. Water intrusion from windshield seals and tail light housings floods the BCM and interior, disabling multiple electrical systems simultaneously and creating mold growth. One vehicle caught fire from electrical failure while parked. Door locks fail to engage electronically; exposed engine wiring gets chewed by rodents due to the removal of engine covers; alternator warning lights appear intermittently without persistent codes. These are not minor glitches—owners describe losing power steering, brakes, and all electrical systems while driving in wet conditions.

Failure modes owners describe

Sync 3/APIM infotainment system failures

Radio presets not retained, phone disconnects, voice commands fail, backup camera blacks out or freezes, rear camera stuck on display, system resets at startup requiring confirmation screens. Owners report corrupt over-the-air updates (February-March 2023) as potential cause. APIM replaced under warranty on some vehicles but failures recurred. System locks up or goes blank, requiring battery disconnect to restart.

When: Throughout ownership; symptoms worsen over time after OTA updates

Symptoms owners cite: Radio presets not saved; Phone won't stay connected to Sync; Voice commands non-functional; Backup/reverse camera blacks out or displays frozen image; Camera stays on reverse view while driving; System asks to confirm settings at every startup; Screen goes blank or locks up; Slow boot-up; Rear camera malfunctions inconsistently

Repairs/costs cited: Master reset temporary fix only (days to weeks). APIM replacement did not resolve if software corrupt. Dealers unable to reproduce intermittently. Some dealers replaced APIM; one report of $400 software update charge after replacement.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealers investigated; one dealer believed corrupt OTA update sent February-March 2023. Recommendation to wait for Ford's corrective update, which did not materialize after 30 days. Ford told one owner this affects many Sync 3.4 vehicles but offered no timetable for fix.

Auto Start-Stop engine shutdown while driving

Engine cuts out completely while vehicle in motion with message 'Auto Start Stop Shift to P Then Restart Engine.' Loss of power steering and braking. Occurs at low speed (15-20 mph) without warning. When: Recent onset; no specific mileage given

Symptoms owners cite: Driver's door won't lock with button or fob; Door lock buzzes without engaging; Keypad unlock does not work; All other door locks function normally; Buzzing occurs even at low speed (~5 mph)

Repairs/costs cited: No repair completed; owner requesting warranty extension per Ford's prior program on co-worker's vehicle

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Co-worker received Ford warranty extension letter for same issue on older truck covering replacement cost; no such program mentioned for this 2020 F-150 owner

Water intrusion via windshield and body seals causing electrical failures

Factory windshield and rear tail light seals leak water into passenger compartment and BCM (Body Control Module) housing, causing complete electrical failures. One vehicle caught fire while parked with engine off; flames originated from dashboard. Water intrusion causes BCM failure, disabling power steering, power brakes, and all electrical systems while driving in rain.

When: Varies; fire at 65,000 miles; water intrusion reported under 3,000 miles and up to ~67,000 miles
