Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering electrical on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin TSB-25-54-002 Mar 2026

This revised Technical Service Bulletin instructs dealers to confirm that the SDA2 Audio Unit touch screen is unresponsive, and if confirmed, to replace the SDA2 Audio Unit.

The failure pattern owners describe

The infotainment touchscreen is the most common complaint: it becomes unresponsive or completely fails within 2–3 years, sometimes under 40k miles. Owners must repeatedly press the screen or use a workaround (mouse) to access navigation, radio, climate controls, and hands-free phone. Mitsubishi dealers refuse repair and demand full replacement of the infotainment computer for $3,200–$4,000; warranty coverage stops at 36k miles despite failures occurring well within that timeframe. Dealers confirm they know about the widespread problem.

Secondary electrical failures appear early and often: rear camera doesn't display in reverse, radio switches audio sources on its own, door lock actuators fail and re-fail within a year, power seat motors stick, and the forward collision system triggers false brake warnings. One owner hit all of these within 1,700 miles, including a severe limp-mode event at highway speed with warnings to stop safely and acceleration capped at 20 mph.

Owners describe these as safety issues because failed infotainment forces reliance on phone operation while driving. Mitsubishi has issued a recall for this touchscreen in Australia but not the U.S., and takes the position that owners bear the cost of replacing known-faulty components outside the limited warranty window.

Failure modes owners describe

Touchscreen/Infotainment Unresponsiveness and Failure

The infotainment touchscreen loses responsiveness or fails entirely within 2-3 years and well under 60k miles. Owners report the screen becoming insensitive to touch before complete failure. As a workaround, a standard computer mouse has reportedly been used to operate it.

When: Within 2-3 years; as early as 1,700 miles (complaint #2); by 60k miles (complaint #3); under 36k miles in some cases

Symptoms owners cite: Touchscreen unresponsive or completely inoperative; Loss of ability to control navigation, music, radio, climate, lights, wipers, and maintenance settings; Inability to access hands-free phone functionality; Driver distraction and safety risk from repeated screen pressing while driving

Repairs/costs cited: Mitsubishi dealers refuse repair; replacement of entire infotainment/control computer required. Cost cited: $3,200–$4,000. Owners report attempting this shortly after purchase due to rapid failure.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Mitsubishi has recalled this issue in Australia. No U.S. recall issued. Dealers acknowledge the known problem but will not repair under warranty or goodwill; warranty is limited to 36k miles despite component failure occurring well within 3 years of ownership.

Radio/Audio System Failure

Radio system stops functioning or audio source erratically switches without user input. One owner reports failure after two years.

When: Within 2 years; one instance at under 1,700 miles (intermittent switching)

Symptoms owners cite: Radio stops working entirely; Audio source automatically switches between XM Radio and Apple CarPlay without driver action

Repairs/costs cited: Owner mentioned in complaint #6 received settlement and repair after litigation; another in complaint #11 reports similar issue across multiple 2020 Outlanders.

Rear Camera Malfunction

Rear camera fails to display when in reverse gear, requiring visual verification without camera assistance.

When: Under 1,700 miles; occurred twice in one week

Symptoms owners cite: Rear camera feed does not appear when vehicle is in reverse

EV/Hybrid System and Acceleration Limp Mode

Vehicle enters severe limp mode with multiple warning lights and acceleration capped at 20 mph on the highway. Warnings include 'EV SYSTEM REQUIRED STOP SAFELY' and 'RBS SERVICE REQUIRED'. Occurred at under 1,700 miles.

When: Under 1,700 miles, during freeway driving at 70 mph

Symptoms owners cite: Multiple warning lights and messages: 'EV SYSTEM REQUIRED STOP SAFELY', 'RBS SERVICE REQUIRED', SERVICE ENGINE SOON light; Severe acceleration limitation (capped at 20 mph); System resolved after vehicle restart but service light persisted

Forward Collision Mitigation System False Activation

Collision avoidance system randomly activates brake warning without cause, beginning days before other electrical failures and persisting afterward. Owner initially blamed road debris but pattern suggests electrical malfunction.

When: Began under 1,700 miles; occurred several times in one week leading to system failure

Symptoms owners cite: Random brake activation warning without nearby vehicles or obstacles; Erratic triggering of forward collision mitigation system; Persistent false activation after vehicle restart

Door Lock Actuator Failure

Front passenger-side and rear door lock actuators fail repeatedly, requiring multiple replacements within one year of the previous repair. Driver-side key fob lock/unlock is inconsistent.

When: Reported to fail repeatedly; second failure within one year of first repair

Symptoms owners cite: Front passenger door lock inoperative; Rear passenger door lock inoperative; Driver-side key fob lock/unlock function inconsistent or non-functional

Repairs/costs cited: Lock actuators replaced previously but failed again within one year.

Power Seat Adjustment Motor Failure

Driver seat power adjustment motor fails to lift the seat; forward/rearward motion works but vertical adjustment is stuck. Motor cannot be replaced separately; entire seat assembly replacement required.

When: <UNKNOWN>

Symptoms owners cite: Seat stuck in reclined position; Vertical lift function non-responsive while fore/aft movement still works; Power seat adjustment motor inoperative

Repairs/costs cited: Entire driver seat assembly must be replaced; motor not sold as separate component.

Brake Warning System False Activation

Dashboard displays 'BRAKE!' warning and audible beep multiple times while driving at normal speed with no traffic or pedestrians present.

When: <UNKNOWN>

Symptoms owners cite: Dashboard beeps and displays 'BRAKE!' warning without cause; Multiple false activation events while driving safely

I believe the locks should be recalled my Lock Actuatora on my 2020 Mitsubishi outlander keeps going out……both my passenger front and back are out for a second time. And driver side doesn’t always unlock and lock with the key fob. All have been fixed before and it has been less than a year after being fixed. This is a safety issue and I think they need to put a recall out!

The touch screen is inoperable so you can't control the radio or aspects of the car such as how the lights, wipers, maintenance, etc. are set. This is a hazardous situation. I contacted the dealer, and they knew exactly what I was referring to as they said they don't repair the system but only replace and it is $3.200. My auto was only 3 years old but had over 36,000 miles (the warranty). Why…

Touch screen radio stopped working by touch reported the problem and was told by our dealer they couldn’t fix it it had to go to another dealer. That dealer said they could fix it and sent us back by the time they had time for us the warranty was out and they want us to pay for it after only 2 years. A family member had this say issue and sued and got a settlement and radio fixed

The touchscreen does not work. This impairs use of the hands free telephone usage, volume levels, and altering of settings. This is a known problem, and Mitsubishi has recalled it in Australia. It is unsafe for any driver to not have ready access to hands free phone usage as it is well known how often distracted driving due to phones has caused accidents.

While traveling on the freeway at 70mph, the car suddenly started flashing warnings of "EV system required stop safely", "rbs service required!", and the service engine soon light came on. Also, I wasn't able to accelerate over 20mph. I quickly exited the freeway and turned off the car. When I restarted it, the car seemed to operate normally as far as the acceleration, but the service engine…
