Most engine problems trace to one platform. This one doesn't. Chrysler's 2.7-liter DOHC V6 shipped in full-size rear-drive sedans and wagons — the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum — and in unrelated front-drive mid-size cars — the Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Stratus, Dodge Avenger — from 1998 through 2010. Across the six nameplates built on the 2.7 in 2005–2010 alone, the years this data covers in depth, owners filed 1,454 engine complaints with NHTSA. That is a defect that followed one part number across two entirely different kinds of car, rather than one bad platform.
The mechanism is well understood and it's the same everywhere the engine went. The 2.7's PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) system routes excess blow-by gas back into the oil in a way that, combined with the factory-recommended service interval, lets the oil sludge faster than most owners expected. Once oil flow through the internal galleries restricts, two things happen downstream: the timing chain — which also drives the water pump on this engine — wears and stretches faster than it should, and the bottom-end bearings start running on marginal lubrication. The end state owners describe over and over is the same: an engine that seizes, sometimes with no more warning than a low-oil light a few thousand miles earlier.
What the failure feels like
Owners describe a slow build, not a sudden event — which is part of what makes it dangerous, because the early signs are easy to write off. A low-oil warning that comes back sooner than it should after a top-off. A tick or rattle at cold start as the timing chain, starved of clean oil, begins to stretch. Then, on some cars, a rising engine temperature or a water pump that starts weeping coolant — the pump bearings live inside the timing cover on this engine, driven by the same chain, so chain wear and coolant problems tend to show up close together. The end of the sequence is the one owners report most: the engine locks up, often on the highway, with the only prior warning being an oil light the driver assumed was routine.
The problem is the engine, not one platform
Look at what's charted and notice how little these cars have in common. The Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger are rear-wheel-drive, built on Chrysler's LX platform, sold as a near-luxury sedan and a muscle-adjacent sedan respectively. The Dodge Avenger is a front-wheel-drive mid-size built on an entirely different architecture shared with Mitsubishi. The Dodge Magnum is a wagon. None of them share a body, a suspension, or a badge identity with the others. What they share is the engine bolted under the hood — and that is exactly the signature of a component-level defect rather than a model-level one. When a failure rides across a lineup with nothing else in common, the part is the story, not the car.
The mileage window: 73,000 to 91,000 miles
Every one of the eight charted model-years lands in a tight band — roughly 73,000 to 91,000 miles at the median. That is not an early-failure pattern like a lot of the defects we cover; it's closer to the opposite. A sludge failure needs time and neglected service intervals to build, so these engines mostly get through their first owner's warranty period and then fail on whoever owns the car in the used market, well past 70,000 miles and squarely in the range where a used-car buyer today is shopping. A 2006 300 or Charger with 80,000 miles on the odometer is sitting right on top of the mileage where this engine's own complaint record clusters.
What to do if you own one, or are about to
Pull the oil cap before anything else. A film of brown or black sludge on the underside of the cap, or oil on the dipstick that looks gritty and dark rather than amber, is the single fastest tell on this engine. Clean, honey-colored oil at 80,000+ miles on a 2.7 is a genuinely good sign — it usually means the previous owner changed it often and used a synthetic that resisted the sludge buildup.
Ask for service records, specifically oil-change intervals. The factory-recommended interval on these cars was widely considered too long for what this engine's PCV design actually needs. A car serviced every 3,000–5,000 miles on synthetic oil is a fundamentally different risk than one run on the longer dealer-recommended schedule with conventional oil. If there's no service history at all, price the engine as a liability, not an asset.
Treat a cold-start tick or a coolant weep as urgent, not cosmetic. Both point at the same shared timing chain/water pump assembly. Caught early, it's a chain-and-pump job. Left alone, it's a seized engine. There is no cheap middle repair once the chain has stretched far enough to affect valve timing.
These cars are old now. The youngest 2.7-equipped car on this list is a 2010 model, sixteen years old as of this writing, and every one of them is long outside any factory coverage. The surviving examples on the road today are a self-selecting group — largely cars whose owners caught the maintenance schedule right the first time. That's the population you're actually shopping in the used market, which is exactly why the inspection above matters more than the model year.

NHTSA engine-category owner-complaint counts and median failure mileage for 2.7L-V6-equipped Chrysler and Dodge vehicles, from our copy of the public NHTSA complaint database (re-validated against the current snapshot on September 10, 2026). Across the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum, Chrysler Sebring, Dodge Stratus and Dodge Avenger, the six nameplates the 2.7 shipped in between 2005 and 2010, the record carries 1,454 engine complaints; the eight charted model-years account for 1,056 of them, drawn from 938 mileage-tagged reports.
Caveat. NHTSA files complaints by model, not by engine or trim, so "engine" is a category count for the whole nameplate in that model year — not isolated to cars that actually shipped with the 2.7. Every nameplate charted here also offered at least one other engine in a higher trim (the 300 and Charger offered a 3.5 V6 and, on performance trims, a 5.7 Hemi V8; the Sebring, Stratus and Avenger offered a 2.4 four-cylinder as their base engine), so these counts include some volume from cars that were never built with the 2.7. The 2.7 was the standard or base-trim engine on all six nameplates in these model years, which is why its reputation as a sludge engine attaches to the whole lineup rather than one trim — but readers should treat the totals as model-level, not 2.7-isolated. Complaint counts also reflect how often owners file, not a failure rate, and are unverified consumer reports. We make no recall claim in this piece: it is about the owner-complaint pattern and the mileage at which it lands, not about what was or wasn't recalled.
