Coolant in the cylinders, two EcoBoost engines and one root cause

No single vehicle draws more engine complaints in the NHTSA record than the Ford Escape. Two small turbocharged EcoBoost engines are behind it. The first one overheated and caught fire and got recalled. The second one cracked its block and never did.

Pull the NHTSA owner-complaint record apart by engine category and one vehicle sits on top of the whole pile: the Ford Escape. Not by a little. The 2017 Escape alone carries 1,643 engine complaints, the single largest engine cluster in the database, and four different Escape model years land in the top of the chart. Behind that pile are two engines that share a last name and a failure — coolant, where it does not belong, inside the cylinders.

Ford's EcoBoost family is a range of small, turbocharged, direct-injected engines built to make big-engine power on small-engine displacement. The two that matter here are the little ones: the 1.6-liter EcoBoost that powered the 2013–2016 Escape and Fusion, and the 1.5-liter EcoBoost that replaced it in the 2017–2019 Escape and ran in the Fusion too. Both were bolted into millions of ordinary commuter crossovers and sedans. Both developed a way to let engine coolant reach the combustion chambers. And the federal record treated the two of them very differently.

How coolant gets into a cylinder

A gasoline engine keeps two fluids strictly apart. Coolant circulates through passages cast into the head and block to carry heat away; the cylinders burn air and fuel. The wall between them is thin by design — that is how the coolant does its job — and on these two EcoBoost engines that wall is where the trouble starts.

On the 1.6L, the failure was about heat. A coolant passage in the cylinder head could lose circulation, a localized hot spot would form, and the head would crack. Once it cracked, coolant escaped — sometimes onto hot engine components, where under the wrong conditions it could ignite. That is the mechanism behind the fire reports: not a fuel leak, a coolant leak onto a glowing exhaust.

On the 1.5L, the failure was quieter and, mechanically, worse for the engine. Coolant seeped past the cylinder walls directly into the combustion chambers. An owner sees it as coolant that keeps disappearing with no puddle on the driveway, a rough cold start, white smoke out the tailpipe, and eventually a misfire as the engine drinks its own coolant. Left alone it scours the cylinder and cracks the block. Same family, same fluid in the same wrong place — but the 1.6L tended to burn, and the 1.5L tended to crack.

The 1.6L burned — and got recalled

The 2013–2016 Escape and the 2013 Fusion built the fire half of this record. In the Escape engine clusters for those years there are 116 fire allegations — 62 on the 2014 alone, 45 on the 2013 — against 2,048 engine complaints. Coolant reaching a hot surface is the kind of failure that produces the crash-and-fire filings a federal regulator watches for, and it produced a string of them.

NHTSA and Ford responded with actual engine-and-engine-cooling recalls. The 2013 Escape 1.6L drew campaigns 12V-551 and 12V-431 for engine-compartment fire risk tied to the cooling system, followed by 13V-583. Later, campaign 17V-209 covered 1.6L Escape and Fusion vehicles for a lack of coolant circulation that could overheat the cylinder head and, again, lead to a fire. Whatever else you say about it, the 1.6L failure was recalled — the manufacturer was forced on the record to fix it.

The 1.5L cracked — and never did

Now look at the amber bars. The 2017–2019 Escape drew 3,110 engine complaintsmore than the 1.6L years — with the 2017 by itself the largest single engine cluster in our entire database. And it did it with almost no fire reports: 7 fire allegations across all three years. The failure had gone quiet. Coolant intrusion into the cylinders wrecks the engine, but it usually does it without flames — a misfire, a no-start, a cracked block on a tow truck, not a fire on the evening news.

We checked the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Escape against NHTSA's live recall record. Every one of them carries recalls — a transmission recall, a power-window recall, an accessory engine-block-heater cord recall — but not one recall addresses the engine coolant-intrusion failure. The single biggest engine-complaint pile in the federal database has no engine recall behind it. Ford handled the 1.5L the way manufacturers handle an expensive but non-fiery failure: a technical service bulletin and an extended-coverage program for some owners, rather than a safety recall. The complaints kept coming; the recall did not.

That is the uncomfortable lesson sitting inside these two engines. The recall system chases fire and injury, not failure volume. The 1.6L was more dangerous and less common, and it got recalled. The 1.5L was more common and less dramatic, and it did not. Complaint volume alone — even a record-setting pile of it — does not force a recall.

The mileage window

Across every one of these Escape model years the median failure lands between 75,000 and 86,000 miles. That is the number a used-car shopper needs, because it sits just past the 60,000-mile powertrain warranty and, on most of these vehicles, past the original owner. A 2017 Escape with 78,000 miles on a dealer lot is sitting right on top of its own median engine-complaint mileage. The failure is not a break-in defect that shows up early and gets fixed under warranty; it is a mid-life failure that lands on whoever owns the car second.

What to do if you own one, or are about to

Watch your coolant. The earliest honest warning on the 1.5L is coolant that drops with no visible leak. Check the reservoir on a schedule. If it keeps falling and there is no puddle, the coolant is going somewhere — and on this engine "somewhere" is the cylinders. A white, sweet-smelling exhaust on cold start is the same message.

Don't dismiss a rough cold start or a misfire. On these engines those are not tune-up symptoms; they are the failure announcing itself. A compression or leak-down test and a look for coolant loss will tell a competent shop quickly whether the block is on its way out.

If you're shopping one, price the engine in. A short-block or long-block replacement on a 1.5L that has cracked is real money on a vehicle that is not worth much to begin with. Ask whether Ford's extended coverage ever applied to that VIN, get the service history, and treat a 2017–2018 Escape at 80,000 miles as a vehicle whose most-complained-about part is right at its failure mileage.

How we did it

Source. NHTSA engine-category owner-complaint counts, fire-allegation counts, and median failure mileage for the Ford Escape, model years 2013–2019, from our copy of the public NHTSA complaint database (re-validated against the current snapshot on June 30, 2026). The seven charted years are the complete Escape engine record for that span — 5,158 complaints — and the Fusion adds another 1,779 across 2013–2018. The recall history was verified against NHTSA's live recalls-by-vehicle record: engine-and-engine-cooling campaigns exist on the 1.6L years (12V-431, 12V-551, 13V-583, 17V-209), and no engine recall exists on the 2017–2019 Escape.

Caveat. NHTSA files complaints by model, not by engine, and the Escape offered a 2.5L non-turbo base engine and a larger 2.0L EcoBoost alongside the small EcoBoost in these years — so the model-level engine counts are not an engine-isolated tally. The 1.5L/1.6L coolant-intrusion failure is the dominant documented engine problem on these specific vehicles, but the raw counts include other engine complaints too. Complaint counts also reflect how often owners file, not a failure rate, and are unverified consumer reports. The recall finding, by contrast, is exact: verified campaign-by-campaign against the live NHTSA record.
