One transmission for the whole lineup, and one failure came with it

Nissan put the same family of continuously variable transmission in the Altima, the Sentra, the Rogue, the Versa and the Pathfinder. When it works, you never think about it. When it doesn't, it shudders, whines, overheats, and quits — and the federal complaint record shows how often it doesn't.

Most transmission stories are about one car. This one is about a decision. Rather than engineer a different automatic for each model, Nissan standardized on the CVT — a continuously variable transmission built largely by its affiliate Jatco — and dropped variations of it into nearly the whole lineup. That is efficient right up until the design has a weakness, because then the weakness ships in everything at once. Across the CVT-equipped Nissans of 2013–2019, owners filed more than 4,435 powertrain complaints with NHTSA. It is one of the largest single-component patterns in the database, and it is spread across five nameplates that share one part.

A conventional automatic has a fixed set of gears. A CVT has none. It runs a steel belt or chain between two cone-shaped pulleys that change width, so the ratio slides continuously instead of stepping through gears — that is what makes it smooth and fuel-efficient. The catch is that all of the engine's torque rides on that belt-and-pulley contact, and it lives or dies on clean fluid and adequate cooling. When either one falls short, the surfaces glaze and slip, and the transmission starts telling on itself.

What the failure feels like

Owners describe the same sequence again and again, and it is worth knowing because the early signs are cheap to catch and the late ones are not. It usually starts as a shudder or judder — a shaking or bucking under light acceleration, often around 20–40 mph, like driving over rumble strips that aren't there. Then a whine or growl that rises with the engine. Then hesitation and RPM flare: you press the pedal, the engine revs, and the car doesn't gather speed, because the belt is slipping on the pulleys instead of gripping. On a hot day or a long climb, the transmission overheats and drops into a limp mode to protect itself. Left there, it fails outright — and a CVT failure is generally a replace-the-unit repair, not a rebuild-a-clutch repair.

The problem is the platform, not one bad car

Look at the chart and notice what's not there: a single villain. The complaints are spread across the Altima, the Sentra, the Rogue, the Versa and the Pathfinder — a commuter sedan, a compact, a crossover, a subcompact and a three-row SUV. Those cars share almost nothing except the thing they all break. That is the signature of a component-level defect rather than a model-level one: when the same failure rides across a lineup that otherwise has nothing in common, the part is the story. The 2013 model year in particular is a wall — the four worst clusters in the chart are all 2013s — but the pattern runs for years on either side.

The 2013 Pathfinder: half broke by 10,000 miles

Most of these cars fail at mid-life. One does not. The 2013 Pathfinder carries 360 powertrain complaints, and their reported failure mileage clusters shockingly early: a median of 10,000 miles, with the bottom quarter of failures at roughly 3,000 miles — across a sample of 247 reports, so this is a pattern, not a couple of lemons. That was the Pathfinder's first year on an all-new CVT, and owners reported the shudder-and-slip behavior almost off the lot. When half of a large batch of failures land inside the first 10,000 miles, you are not looking at wear — you are looking at a design that was in trouble from the first tank of gas.

The mileage window on the rest

For the sedans and crossovers, the median failure lands between 67,000 and 85,000 miles. That is the number that matters to a used-car shopper, because it sits just past the powertrain warranty and, on most of these cars, past the first owner. A 2,016 Altima on a dealer lot with 70,000 miles is sitting right on top of its own median CVT-complaint mileage. This isn't a defect that shows up early and gets fixed for free — it's a mid-life failure that lands on whoever buys the car second.

What to do if you own one, or are about to

Treat a shudder as a warning, not a quirk. That light-throttle judder around 30 mph is the earliest honest sign. Fresh CVT fluid and, on some of these, a control-software update can arrest an early case — but the window is early. A transmission that already flares RPM or overheats is usually past saving cheaply.

Service the fluid, and use the right one. These transmissions are unforgiving about fluid condition and specification. Nissan's CVT fluid (NS-2/NS-3, by model) is not a suggestion — the wrong fluid or overheated fluid is how a lot of these die. If you own one and don't know the fluid's history, that is the first thing to fix.

If you're shopping one, price the transmission in. A CVT replacement can run a meaningful fraction of what these cars are worth. Get the service history, ask whether Nissan's extended CVT coverage ever applied to the VIN (the company has faced repeated CVT class actions and extended coverage on some models), and treat a 2013–2016 Altima, Sentra, Rogue or Pathfinder near its median mileage as a car whose most-complained-about part is at its failure point.

Across the Altima, Sentra, Rogue, Versa, Pathfinder and the other CVT models, the 2013–2019 lineup carries 4,435 powertrain complaints; the nine charted model-years account for 2,426 of them. The 2013 Pathfinder distribution — median 10,000 miles, first quartile ~3,000 — is drawn from 247 mileage-tagged reports.

Caveat. NHTSA files complaints by model, not by component, so "powertrain" is a category that can include engine as well as transmission reports. On these specific Nissans the CVT is the dominant, well-documented powertrain failure — but the raw counts are model-level, not CVT-isolated. Complaint counts also reflect how often owners file, not a failure rate, and are unverified consumer reports.
