Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering airbags on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin PIC5650J Jul 2021

This Preliminary Information communication provides information to the technician about vehicles that have an intermittent no crank, no start, or start stall concern with the security light coming on. Technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Codes B3055, B3060, and/or B3935. Technician should not replace any parts for this concern. If unable to duplicate the concern ask if the customer uses any Radio Frequency Identification Devices when the concern is present. Dealer should also direct their customers to the appropriate section in the Owner manuals that references that the device complies.

The failure pattern owners describe

A substantial cluster of complaints centers on the passenger-side occupancy sensor: owners describe the airbag OFF warning light staying on even when someone is sitting there, with the light flickering on and off when the passenger moves. Multiple owners paid $800–$1,700 to replace the sensor or occupancy module, only to find the problem returns or their VIN isn't covered under the available recall (07V062000). Dealers sometimes can't diagnose the issue at all.

Water intrusion is a recurring secondary cause of airbag faults. Owners report water pooling under the driver's floor and passenger floor during heavy rain, which leaks into the airbag module behind the glove box and damages floor sensors. One owner spent $3,200 on repairs and the water still came back.

On the deployment side, there are two troubling extremes: some owners report curtain and side airbags firing unexpectedly at low speeds on residential streets with no collision, while others were in real crashes—head-on at 50 mph, side impact at 55 mph—where the bags didn't deploy at all, leaving occupants injured. A few owners also report the service airbag light coming on repeatedly over years of ownership with dealers unable to pinpoint a cause despite multiple service visits. One owner documents an airbag deploying while attempting a jump-start with a dead battery and wet interior.

These are unverified consumer allegations with no manufacturer acknowledgment of systemic defects.

Failure modes owners describe

Passenger Occupancy Sensor Malfunction

Passenger-side airbag light illuminates or sensor fails to recognize occupancy, causing airbag to deactivate when passenger is present. Sensor stops working or becomes erratic. Owners report intermittent on/off cycling when passenger moves or shifts weight.

When: Early in ownership; failure mileage range 6,000–93,000 miles reported

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger airbag OFF warning light illuminates continuously or intermittently; Airbag deactivates when passenger is in seat or moves; Service airbag message displays; Occupancy sensor unresponsive to passenger presence

Codes mentioned: B0081, Occupancy module code (erratic)

Repairs/costs cited: $800–$1,700 per owner reports for sensor/module replacement; dealer unable to duplicate on some vehicles

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA Campaign 07V062000 does not cover all affected VINs; some owners told replacement is out of warranty; TSB exists for connector issues only, not module failure

Water Intrusion Damaging Airbag Electronics

Water leaks into vehicle interior, particularly through front windshield seal or sunroof drains, flooding footwells and contaminating airbag modules and floor sensors. Water damage triggers airbag warning light and requires costly replacement of sensors and modules.

When: Occurs during or after heavy rain; reported on vehicles 6+ years old with minimal prior water issues

Symptoms owners cite: Water pooling under driver floorboard or in passenger floor area; Airbag light illuminates after water intrusion; Wet interior carpets, moldy smell reported; Water leaking continues after repair attempts

Repairs/costs cited: $3,200–$4,200 for airbag floor sensor, module, and windshield replacement; water problem persists after repair in at least one case

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No recall identified for water intrusion; dealer pinpointed windshield seal as source in one case but repair did not resolve recurrence

Spontaneous Airbag Deployment at Low Speed

Side and curtain airbags deploy without collision impact while driving at normal speeds. Incidents occur on residential streets at 35 mph and on parkways with no contact with obstacles. Police and GM investigation found no reason for deployment; GM blamed operator error and excessive vehicle tilt, which owners dispute.

When: Occurs while driving at low speed; mileage not always reported

Symptoms owners cite: Curtain and/or side airbags deploy suddenly with loud noise and smoke; No impact or collision occurs; no potholes or debris found at scene; Vehicle does not tip or roll; All dashboard lights illuminate after deployment

Repairs/costs cited: No parts cited; vehicle typically towed to dealer after incident

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: GM denied liability and blamed operator error or excessive yaw (tilt >48°); no recall issued

Airbag Failure to Deploy in Actual Crashes

Airbags fail to deploy during head-on or side-impact collisions at moderate to highway speeds. Occupants sustain injury from lack of restraint protection. One incident involved control module disconnected during impact; others lack clear cause.

When: Failure mileage 35,000–140,000 miles; no pattern of early or late failure

Symptoms owners cite: No airbag deployment during head-on collision at 50 mph; No airbag deployment during side impact at moderate speed; Occupants injured (head, chest, leg injuries reported); Vehicle sustains severe impact damage

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle towed for inspection; one case found disconnected control module during impact

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer investigated and attributed one failure to control module disconnection during crash

Intermittent Service Airbag Warning Light

Service airbag warning light illuminates intermittently or continuously without owner being able to determine cause. Dealer unable to duplicate or diagnose on many occasions. Light recurs multiple times over ownership.

When: Reported from 75,000–130,000 miles; some vehicles experience light within first year of ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Service airbag message displayed on dashboard; Warning light appears and disappears randomly; Multiple diagnostic visits unable to locate fault

Repairs/costs cited: Owners paid for multiple inspections ($500 reported in one case) with no resolution; dealer suggested possible loose connector in some cases

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: VIN not included in recall 07V062000; manufacturer unwilling to repair; no TSB covers root cause

Defective Curtain/Side Airbag Physical Condition

Curtain airbag material splits or tears open while vehicle is parked. Warning light also illuminates. Indicates material degradation or manufacturing defect in airbag assembly.

When: Reported at 138,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Driver-side curtain airbag visibly splitting or tearing; Airbag warning light illuminates; Airbag not deployed in accident, yet material is compromised

Repairs/costs cited: Vehicle not taken to dealer; repair not performed

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No response documented

Passenger Airbag Deactivation Light Malfunction for Light-Weight Occupants

Front passenger airbag OFF warning light illuminates when occupant weighing less than 110 pounds sits in seat, incorrectly signaling airbag deactivation. Light remains on even when child or small adult is present and airbag should be armed.

When: Failure mileage 6,000 miles reported; early in vehicle ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger airbag OFF indicator illuminates with light-weight occupant (105–110 lbs) in seat; Airbag remains deactivated despite passenger presence; Dealer finds no fault upon inspection

Repairs/costs cited: No repair documented; dealer stated nothing was wrong

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No response documented

Premature Airbag Deployment During Jump-Start with Low Battery

Driver-side airbag deploys suddenly while owner is attempting to jump-start vehicle with completely discharged battery. Vehicle interior was wet from sunroof leak. No collision or impact occurred. Airbag deployed after turn of ignition key to OFF position while sitting in driver seat for less than one minute.

When: Occurs during troubleshooting of no-start condition; vehicle had been idle for weeks after alternator failure

Symptoms owners cite: Airbag deploys without collision or impact; Deployment occurs during jump-start attempt with dead battery; Vehicle interior wet from sunroof leak; Passenger airbag does not deploy (asymmetrical deployment)

Repairs/costs cited: No parts cited; owner documented incident with photographs

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: No response documented
