Traveling at 70 MPH on the highway the transmission shifted into 1st gear causing the rear tires to skid and the rear of the vehicle to loose traction. This lasted a few seconds before it shifted back into 6th gear and I was able to maintain control. Slowed to stop at a red light and vehicle shifted into first gear at about 20 MPH then jerked forward when coming to a complete stop. The next…

powertrain · 51,000 mi · filed 12/31/2017

When attempting to pull into traffic from stopped position, automatic transmission begins forward motion in 5th gear and will not change from 5th gear. As accelerator is pressed rpms go up but car barely moves. Once truck is turned off and back on transmission is back in 1st gear, but this isn't always an option when cars are approaching rapidly from behind.

powertrain · 133,000 mi · filed 12/30/2019

I was driving on a highway going approximately 60 MPH when it unexpectedly downshifted. My momentum violently jerked me forward, the tires squeeled, and the RPM gauge went up to over 6,000. Another issue is that it occasionally will not shift out of first gear. I will be starting from a stop and I'll be going about 10-15mph and if I don't let off the throttle the engine will just rev up past…

How serious is the powertrain problem on the 2013 Ford F-150?

It's a serious issue. 1188 complaints have been filed, including 22 reports involving a crash and 1 fatality(ies). We've classified it as critical based on NHTSA's reported outcomes.

At what mileage does the powertrain typically fail?

Across the 838 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most powertrain failures cluster between 65,600 and 130,500 miles, with the median around 94,000. A quarter of owners report trouble before 65,600; a quarter make it past 130,500. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $2,500 for powertrain repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to powertrain?

No active recalls currently cover powertrain issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
