Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering visibility on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin PS493 Mar 2017

TSB: DEFOGGING LOGIC ? NORMAL OPERATION, DISABLING, AND ENABLING - Starting with 2010MY, all Kia vehicles, except Rio (JB), incorporate a defogging logic to prevent the interior windows from becoming excessively fogged. Depending on the specific model, the HVAC control head monitors ambient temperature and/or cabin humidity to determine which settings will best prevent the windows from fogging. If the system detects lower ambient temperature or higher cabin humidity, the defogging logic may automatically switch ON the A/C, and/or set the air intake mode to Fresh Air. If the user changes these settings, the defogging logic will take control again after 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the procedu

TSB: WINDSHIELD WASHER PUMP INLET FILTER REPLACEMENT - THIS BULLETIN PROVIDES INFORMATION RELATING TO POSSIBLE FOREIGN DEBRIS ACCUMULATION ON THE WINDSHIELD WASHER PUMP INLET FILTER. OVER TIME, SOME KIA VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT A LIMITED APPLICATION OF WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID WHEN THE WASHER FUNCTION IS USED. LIMITED APPLICATION OF WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID CAN BE CAUSED BY FOREIGN DEBRIS ON THE WASHER PUMP INLET FILTER. TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, REPLACE THE WASHER PUMP INLET FILTER AND PERFORM THE WINDSHIELD WASHER RESERVOIR FLUSHING PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS TSB.

The failure pattern owners describe

The 2013 Soul has a troubling pattern of unplanned glass failure. The rear hatch window shatters spontaneously—just closing the driver door, opening doors normally, or sitting parked overnight triggers sudden fracture into sharp shards. Multiple owners describe the glass breaking with no external impact and no warning. One owner watched it happen while driving; they had to swerve to avoid crossing the centerline.

Windshields crack under unusually low impact—small rocks at 40 mph cause chips that spread into full cracks within weeks. One owner experienced three separate cracking events in three weeks, a pattern never seen in 20 years of prior vehicle ownership. One crack appeared spontaneously at the rearview mirror level with no recalled impact.

Cold-weather operation creates a separate visibility hazard: washer fluid lines freeze solid despite low-temperature fluid. Kia field engineers acknowledge taking nonstop calls about this but say there's no fix; the lines sit too far from engine heat.

Windshield wipers fail intermittently during snow, compounding the visibility problem. A sunroof shattered completely at 65 mph highway speed with no impact. The rearview mirror mount (ZTVHL3) detached during a side-impact collision, becoming airborne and injuring the driver's face.

Taken together, these failures suggest design weaknesses in glass selection, washer line routing, wiper durability, and mirror retention.

Failure modes owners describe

Rear hatch glass spontaneous fracture

Rear hatch window shatters without external impact during normal operation—opening/closing doors, driving, or while parked overnight. Glass breaks into shards and splinters. Multiple complaints indicate a pattern of spontaneous failure unrelated to impact or rock strikes.

When: During normal vehicle use; mileage varies from 1,000 to 23,195 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Rear hatch glass shatters without warning; Glass breaks into shards and splinters atypical of normal automotive glass; Failure occurs when closing driver door; Failure occurs while parked overnight; Safety hazard from falling glass while vehicle in motion

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer diagnosis confirms rear glass replacement needed; some vehicles awaiting NHTSA Products Investigation before repair

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: NHTSA Products Investigation initiated; manufacturer made aware in at least one case

Windshield susceptibility to cracking

Windshield develops cracks at low-impact scenarios or spontaneously. Small rock strikes at moderate speeds (40 mph, low-impact debris) cause chips that spread into full cracks within weeks. One crack appeared at rearview mirror level without prior impact, suggesting possible stress concentration or defective glass.

When: Various mileage and timing; one case at 25 mph in normal conditions, others during everyday driving

Symptoms owners cite: Windshield cracks from small rock impacts at moderate speeds; Repeated cracking in short timeframe (3 weeks, 2 additional cracks); Spontaneous crack at rearview mirror level without reported impact; Pattern uncommon in owner's 20 years of vehicle ownership

Repairs/costs cited: Owner reports this pattern is unprecedented compared to 20 years of prior vehicle ownership

Sunroof spontaneous shattering

Sunroof panel shatters completely while driving at highway speed without any impact, warning sign, or identifiable external cause. Vehicle was traveling 65 mph when failure occurred.

When: At approximately 214,000 miles; occurred during highway driving

Symptoms owners cite: Sunroof shatters spontaneously at highway speed; No warning light illuminated; No external impact or debris strike reported

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer contacted but vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer not notified

Windshield washer lines freezing in cold weather

Washer fluid lines freeze solid in cold temperatures despite owner using low-temp washer fluid. Kia acknowledged nonstop calls about this issue but states no fix exists. Root cause: washer lines positioned away from engine block heat, unable to prevent freezing in northeastern climates.

When: Cold weather operation, particularly northeastern Ohio winters

Symptoms owners cite: Washer lines freeze making windshield vision impossible; Hazardous visibility condition in winter driving; Occurs despite low-temperature washer fluid use

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Kia fielding nonstop customer calls; manufacturer states no solution available

Rearview mirror mechanical failure under side impact

Rearview mirror (model ZTVHL3) detaches at the ball joint connection during a side-impact collision. The metal mounting structure torqued out of shape under impact force; wiring alone could not retain the mirror, which became airborne. Owner sustained facial laceration and contusion requiring four stitches.

When: During side-impact collision at 25 mph (vehicle struck while traveling through green light)

Symptoms owners cite: Mirror detaches during broadside impact; Mirror becomes airborne hazard; Ball joint connection fails; metal conduit deforms

Repairs/costs cited: Mirror model ZTVHL3; structural failure at ball joint-to-conduit interface

Windshield wiper intermittent failure

Windshield wipers fail to operate during snow weather conditions. Failure is intermittent, recurring over multiple driving episodes.

When: During snow weather; mileage unknown

Symptoms owners cite: Wipers fail to operate during winter precipitation; Failure occurs intermittently across multiple events

Common questions

How serious is the visibility problem on the 2013 Kia Soul?

It's a meaningful issue. 12 complaints have been filed and the failure mode causes operational problems for owners. Repairs average $350.

At what mileage does the visibility typically fail?

Across the 9 complaints that reported odometer mileage, most visibility failures cluster between 2,800 and 32,000 miles, with the median around 22,900. A quarter of owners report trouble before 2,800; a quarter make it past 32,000. Maintenance history matters more than the odometer alone — this is the reported failure window, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to fix?

Independent shops typically charge around $350 for visibility repairs on this vehicle. Dealer pricing tends to run 20-40% higher. The exact figure depends on the specific failure mode, parts availability, and your local labor rates. If you're outside factory warranty, an extended service contract often covers this category.

Are there any recalls related to visibility?

No active recalls currently cover visibility issues on this vehicle. The complaints filed represent owner-reported failures that haven't risen to the level of a manufacturer-issued recall — but they're still worth knowing about before you buy or budget for repairs.
