Is there a fix? Manufacturer service bulletins

The manufacturer has issued service bulletins covering body on this vehicle — documented repair instructions, service campaigns, or warranty extensions sent to dealers. A TSB isn't a recall (it's not a free safety remedy), but it's the manufacturer acknowledging the issue and how to fix it.

Service Bulletin SSM 54601 Feb 2026

Ford and Lincoln vehicles equipped with wired keyless entry keypad systems and accessory wireless keyless entry keypad systems may or may not come with a wallet card containing the master code. Unlike the integrated wired keypad, the accessory wireless keypad master code cannot be retrieved from the vehicle using a diagnostic scan tool or from the label printed on the body control module (BCM). The Factory Keyless Entry Code application within the diagnostic scan tool will not provide an applicable master code for the accessory wireless keypad. If the wallet card for an accessory keypad is not available, the "Wireless RF Keypad Diagnosis Guide" can be referenced and provides direction on how

For 2000-2024 Ford and Lincoln vehicles, swapping a module from a vehicle for diagnosis purposes is likely to cause errors and is not recommended. It is also not recommended to order a replacement module using a vehicle identification number (VIN) from a different vehicle. Most modules on these affected vehicles are VIN/vehicle specific and hardware variations between modules do exist. Swapping a module from a vehicle or ordering a module using a different vehicle/VIN can cause ineffective repairs and additional vehicle down time. Make sure all appropriate Workshop Manual (WSM) procedures are followed when diagnosing the condition prior to all module replacements and only order modules using

SSM 47909 - 2017-2019 Escape, MKC - License Plate Bracket Nut(s) Damaged With Over Torqued Screw(s) 2017-2019 Escape and MKC vehicles may exhibit a concern of the license plate bracket nut(s) being damaged due to the screw(s) being over torqued. The torque specification for these screws are 1.7 Nm (1.25 lb-ft). Engineering recommends not to use any power tool to tighten these screws. Most any power tool will apply more torque to the screws than the allowed torque specification and will damage the plastic nut(s).

Some 2017-2019 Escape vehicles may exhibit a power liftgate that bounces back and/or will not cinch to the fully closed position. This may be due to the adjustment of the striker, latch, liftgate margins, flushness and/or striker wings. To resolve the condition, adjust the striker position or the striker wings.

The failure pattern owners describe

Water intrusion through deteriorating roof seams is the most serious recurring complaint. Multiple owners describe water pooling in spare tire wells, interior panels saturating with moisture, mildew developing inside cabins, and electrical gremlins (backup camera and radio failures). One owner reports catastrophic damage requiring headliner and roof molding replacement after hurricane-driven flooding accelerated a pre-existing factory defect; Ford refused coverage citing lemon law expiration.

Door latches fail to catch or lock across both driver and passenger sides, leaving doors partially ajar and triggering warning lights. One owner suffered a leg laceration when an unsecured driver door poked their calf during exit. A power liftgate opened spontaneously at 10 mph and failed to stop when closing, trapping an owner's head and causing a concussion.

White factory paint chips and delaminates around the windshield trim, exposing bare metal. Multiple owners report this; a dealership acknowledged it affects all white Escapes but refused repair.

Additional concerns include door hinge degradation with popping sounds, dashboard clips separating and lifting trim panels, heavy undercarriage rust (spindles, driveshaft, CV axles) appearing immediately on new vehicles, and belly shield clips failing to hold undercarriage protection panels in place. Body rattles originating near rear doors remain unlocated by repair shops. One owner cites concern about dashboard clips potentially failing on the driver side and blocking visibility.

Failure modes owners describe

Roof seam sealer degradation and water intrusion

Factory seam sealer under roof moldings deteriorates and separates, allowing rainwater to penetrate into body panels, roof structure, and interior. Water accumulates in panels, under headliner, and in spare tire well, causing corrosion, electrical shorts, mildew growth, and musty odors.

When: Occurs over years; becomes acute by 54,000 miles; reported at 35,000 miles on spare tire well

Symptoms owners cite: Water visible in spare tire well; Water entering from roof when raining; Mildew smell inside cabin; Visible mildew on interior trim; Backup camera malfunction due to moisture; Radio displaying 'wiring is wet' message; Sloshing sound when braking as water moves inside panels

Repairs/costs cited: Multiple dealerships identified need for roof panel repair, headliner replacement, left and right roof molding replacement, full interior teardown to assess corrosion extent. Owner reports Ford corporate refused to repair under 3-year lemon law cutoff.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Ford corporate declined repair or replacement; acknowledged out of lemon law window. Referred to NHTSA hotline in one case.

Door latch mechanism failure

Driver and passenger side doors fail to latch securely, remaining slightly ajar or not catching properly. Door may swing open or fail to stay closed during entry/exit, or continue to poke occupant.

When: At 22,509 miles (latch issue); 36,000 miles (door poking leg during exit)

Symptoms owners cite: Door won't close completely or latch properly; Door ajar warning light illuminates; Door swings open unexpectedly while vehicle is in motion or stationary; Door pokes occupant's leg during entry/exit; Doors on both driver and passenger sides affected

Repairs/costs cited: No repairs completed in any reported cases. One owner sustained calf laceration requiring emergency room stitches.

Rear liftgate/hatch closure malfunction

Power liftgate opens unexpectedly while driving or fails to stop when closing, creating entrapment hazard. Proximity sensor (rear foot sensor) may malfunction or be falsely triggered.

When: At 6,709 miles; also reported at 68,000 miles with non-functional tailgate

Symptoms owners cite: Liftgate opens spontaneously while driving at 10 mph; Hatch fails to stop when closing despite obstructions; Power latch does not engage properly; Tailgate unresponsive to controls

Repairs/costs cited: One case resulted in concussion (owner hit head as hatch closed on them). Dealer stated foot position near sensor triggered closure but could not duplicate failure.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer notified; vehicle not repaired. Dealer diagnostic inconclusive.

Dashboard trim separation and clip failure

Dashboard clips fail to hold trim panels in place, causing passenger side dashboard near glove box to lift and separate. Issue attributed to vibration but occurs even on low-mileage vehicles with minimal use.

When: By 17,279 miles on vehicle with 4 years of garage storage

Symptoms owners cite: Passenger side dashboard lifting near glove box; Dashboard clips separating from body

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer quoted $298 for complete dash replacement. Owner expressed concern this could be safety hazard if driver side clips fail, raising dash into line of sight. Premium warranty does not cover.

White paint delamination around windshield

White factory paint chips, cracks, and peels away from body around windshield trim, exposing bare metal to weather. Occurs on multiple 2018 Escapes and other Ford models in white. Dealership acknowledges known issue but refuses warranty repair.

When: By 3 months of ownership on 2018 model (complaint filed January 2025)

Symptoms owners cite: Paint chipping around windshield trim; Paint cracking and flaking; Bare metal exposed

Repairs/costs cited: Dealership attributed to improper surface prep at factory but declined coverage.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Dealership stated this is known to affect all white Escapes and other white Ford models; refused repair.

Door hinge degradation

Driver side door hinges make loud popping sounds and feel unstable, as though door might detach. Hinges require reinforcement but repairs not completed.

When: Mileage unknown

Symptoms owners cite: Loud popping sounds from door hinge during entry/exit; Hinge feels unstable

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer confirmed need for hinge reinforcement. Vehicle not repaired.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer notified.

Premature undercarriage rust on suspension and drivetrain components

Spindles, driveshaft, and CV axles show heavy rust shortly after purchase on brand new vehicle. Ford dealership claims rust is normal for new vehicles. Independent mechanic disputes and expresses safety concern about wheel detachment.

When: Apparent on new vehicle at time of purchase

Symptoms owners cite: Heavy rust on spindles; Rust on driveshaft; Rust on CV axles

Repairs/costs cited: Independent mechanic (Cartec, Tulsa OK) documented findings; owner concerned about progression leading to wheel failure.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Ford dealership stated this is normal.

Door panel deformation

Passenger side door armrest panel bows inward toward occupant, reducing usable space and comfort. Cause undetermined by dealer; possibly design or material defect.

When: At approximately 26,000 miles

Symptoms owners cite: Door panel indenting inward where armrest is located

Repairs/costs cited: Dealer unable to determine cause; speculated wear and tear but could not confirm.

Recalls/TSBs owners mention: Manufacturer notified.

Body rattle and unlocated noise sources

Rattling or loose noise emanates from vehicle body, specifically near right rear passenger door area. Source cannot be located or isolated by repair facility despite investigation.

When: Present with 13,000 miles at 10 months of ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Body rattle on right side near rear passenger door

Repairs/costs cited: Repair shop unable to locate source.

Underbody shield fastener failure

Belly shield/underbody protection panel detaches repeatedly due to failed clips or fasteners that cannot maintain secure grip. Multiple owners report same issue.

When: Multiple occurrences over vehicle ownership

Symptoms owners cite: Belly shield falling off repeatedly; Clips not holding securely

Repairs/costs cited: Owner reports another customer at dealership has same issue; appears to be recurring problem.
