On May 28, 2025, a 2023 VW ID.4 spontaneously caught fire while in use. The local Fire Department and County Hazmat responded to the scene. The vehicle was declared a total loss due to thermal runaway and lithium battery fume toxicity. Crucially, the vehicle experienced a secondary ignition/re-fire several days later while in the custody of a towing company, resulting in the total destruction of the vehicle and damage to third-party property. The manufacturer participated in a joint inspection of the remains in late October 2025 but has not provided an explanation for the failure. This vehicle represents a severe public safety hazard, as the fire occurred without warning and the high-voltage battery system proved unstable enough to reignite days after the initial suppression. I was backing my 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 into my very tight driveway very slowly to avoid hitting my other car parked on the street, my house and my neighbors house. The parking collision sensor alerted me that I was close to my other car but I can see out my window that I had room to clear it safely so I continued to back into my driveway at about 1 mile an hour. All of a sudden, my car made a click click noise as it lurched back and forth and then the car took over control and drove into my house about 20-30 feet at maybe 20 mph (not sure exactly but pretty fast) and crashed into my house and my neighbors house/gate. I pumped the brakes 2-3x but they did not work and the car continued driving into my house at that fast speed. I remember thinking omg, the car is not going to stop until i
While driving the vehicles safety features automatically turn off and the screens in the car go blank and then come back on after a few minutes. When we contacted the dealer and the manufacturer we were told there was no fix and to just pull over and restart the car. The dealer told us to treat it like a cell phone that isn’t working and just turn it off and turn it back on.
At a stop, the car began rapid acceleration by itself, the auto emergency brake began but it bypassed it and began accelerating again causing me to rear end someone at a red light
The car came to a sudden unexpected stop from about 10 miles per hour. Everything shut down and the car came to a harsh stop, skipping/shuddering/stuttering. Happened so fast and unexpectedly that it startled me. Almost like the brakes were locking up and pulsing. But no brakes were ever applied by me. After coming to a complete stop car was completely dark. I tried to press the brake pedal to start it and nothing. Tried the brake pedal a second time and it turned on allowing me to drive away. Shortly after this event a thumping or banging noise started to occur when I accelerate or decelerate. Almost like something is loose below my feet. Weird thing is the sound is not constant. Comes and goes. Seems to be triggered after I make a right turn. Car has been at the dealer since November 28
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The driver's side door opened while I was driving the vehicle at around 25 mph How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The door opened by itself while the car was moving causing multiple safety issues to me the driver and others driving near me. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? We have an appointment to have it inspected by the dealer tomorrow on 12/6/23 Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Prior to the door opening while driving, the car door made several locking, unlocking nosies and then opened. Prior to th

The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated while the contact's husband was driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact stated that several warning lights illuminated, and the vehicle lost motive power. The contact allowed the vehicle to stop before restarting the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that parts were not available. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was 3,500. VIN tool confirms parts
My ID.4 charging function is not working as it has has in the past: 1. the "plug to charge" function at Electrify America (uses the vehicle VIN to automatically activate the charging session and payment) worked previously and now does not work. I have attempted it at 14 different stations at two different locations of EA today (and it has not been working for the past few charging sessions at EA). 2. charging cable should automatically unlock when charging is complete (it is setup that way in the car and has worked in the past). To release requires pressing the unlock button on the remote 3 times or pull the manual release cord in the trunk of the car. 3. charging rates are abnormally low...about 70 kWh when the car usually charges at 100-160 kWh rate my concern is that the "CP" terminal
The vehicle does not get 275 range fully charged as window sticker states. New vehicle with 600 miles on it only gets 242 range when fully charged. The vehicle is over stated to boost sales. You cannot lock the vehicle in any way, shape, or form unless you have the key fob. if you forget to lock your car, you cannot ask someone to lock it for you without a key. The car cannot be locked from interior door like a traditional door. Huge safety issue. To make it worse, the vehicle cannot be locked from the App like Volkswagen advertised. Scam all around.
The rear passenger side door unlocked on its own . The display screen goes blank for approx 10-15 seconds while driving .
The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V651000 (Structure) and 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the parts to do the recall repairs were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs. The dealer was contacted. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 MPH, the vehicle lost power. The main control panel blacked out and the contact was unable to accelerate. The contact coasted to the side of the road and the vehicle regained power and was able to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that a software update was needed; however, update was unavailable. The failure occurred approximately
On December 4, 2024, I left a Volkswagen ID.4 electric car in for service of Volkswagen due to software and door locking issues. The service manager confirmed the problems but stated that the vehicle has not yet received any repairs from Volkswagen and that there is no solution available. I have been given ongoing, negligent responses, such as being told that the only option is to buy another car or that there is nothing they can do. 1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The software system and door locking mechanism are malfunctioning. Both issues are related to unrepairable recalls from Volkswagen. The software issues are causing electrical faults, stopping problems, and unsafe braking performance. The door locking issue
Both main panel and infotainments system of the vehicle are inoperable. No information on the vehicle is available when operating it such as speed/charge remaining/safety information such as engine lights/cameras, etc.

For the second time in this car, I experienced sudden acceleration while parking (turning right). I had to slam the brakes to prevent hitting a parked vehicle, causing whiplash. No warning or safety features engaged. See NHTSA crash incident report 11593929. There are sufficient similar reports to warrant an investigation and hold VW accountable.
While I was pulling into a parking space in a parking garage, the car suddenly accelerated to a high rate of speed and crashed into the wall of the parking garage. The front and side air bags deployed. The crash caused significant front end damage to the car. The passenger (my husband) was not hurt but I have bruises on my head, nose, chest, and abdomen from the steering wheel and seat belt. I was not sure that I had caused the crash, so checked the internet for any information and found that this has occurred to other drivers of this car. I have not yet gotten the read out of the car's black box. There were no warnings or messages before the crash. I am currently arranging the towing of the car.

The OEM heated windshield has a relatively common defect where there is extreme distortion in the glass along the passenger side edge of the windshield. This is obviously a safety issue because that area is key for visibility of pedestrians and bicyclists and other vehicles when making turns. The vehicle is currently at the dealer pending repair with no updates.

High speed sidewall blowout @ 70 mph. Right rear passenger tire. Less than 6000 miles. Had same issue on left rear tire at z out 5,000 miles in august 2024. I paid $1000 out of pocket in Rhode Island because local dealer did not have a replacement tire in stock and i could not wait as my vacation was ending. I sm afraid yo drive this car..
brakes 1 complaint shown
Since purchasing my vehicle in January of 2023 the front breaks have been squeaking. I brought this to the attention of the dealer where I purchased the vehicle, several times. I even asked them how I will I even supposed to know if I need new brakes because the start of the squeaking is typically a sign to get your brakes checked. Anyway, online auto forums are loaded with this squeaking brake problem!!! A few weeks ago I went in for service and VW told me my brakes were at 6mm, and suggested replacement of the pads. Yes, at 6 mm! So now all I can help but think that VW has known all along about this brake problem and at about year three, they feel that they can recommend a brake job. After leaving the dealership, I went to the garage near my house and they ordered new front pa

The vehicle’s door handle malfunctioned twice, causing a door to open unexpectedly while driving at normal speeds. Small children were present as passengers during one of these incidents, increasing the risk of injury had the door opened fully or had another driver reacted suddenly to the open door. There were no warning lamps, audible alerts, or error messages before these occurrences. The handles and related components remain installed and could be made available for inspection upon request. Additionally, the dashboard display occasionally goes blank or glitches, making it impossible to read speed, warning indicators, or other critical information while driving. This issue occurs intermittently and does not seem to follow any specific pattern. No visible warning lamps or messages appear
